the doctors were caring and experienced and when I had postop complications were very responsive. Nursing was borderline either you had a great nurse or the nurse from another dimension. Postop in recovery room the nurse c/o losing her OT when I was transferred to the unit. She pulled the leads for cardiac monitoring off so that I had bleeding at the site and it took a couple of weeks postop to heal. I had the original bypass surgery from years ago and needed massive reconstruction and surgery to fix the damages from the past and some of the nurses made me feel inferior as a patient and I had to explain myself which should never happen. I had a nurse fail at starting a PICC line in my arm and walked away with out putting a dressing on the site and I had red fluid all over. I have a hard time holding my urine when ill and asked for a bedside commode and was told they did not have any in the hospital and that if I did not reach the bathroom I could go on the floor they would clean it up. I had to share aroom with a man and in new jersey females and males are not together. I also had nurses that did not know that you gastric bypass patients do not get straws post op. It was unsettling. But the best part was that after discharge I fell on ice 6 weeks later and then while on extended sick leave my son who was 18 at the time was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer . I lost wages and the money I did have I spent or I borrowed money to get whatever my son needed for the last year of his life. Then Shirley Kunkel entered my life, I had a bill from Geisinger for 16,000 and a bill from Sloan Kettering for my son for 20,000 the leftovers from what insurance did not cover. I explained to Ms Kunkel about my son having just died and I never got a sorry from her. Her words were just business and now I stand to lose my house even with making payments monthly to Geisinger. this is the American way of business for health care . I do not recommend Geisinger unless you like to be put down. Pros: the doctors were excellent Cons: nursing and sherry kunkel of the finance division
