Review content:
We tried going to Jamestown Oyster Bar on our first night in town 8/5/11. We were told on the phone by the hostess that we would be put ""at the top of the list."" We headed right over only to find out that it actually meant the bottom of the list because they call names from the bottom up. We tried going to the bar but the hostess told us there was not enough room for our party of eight. We ate at Slice of Heaven down the street and it was excellent! The next night 8/6/11 we returned as a group of four to put ourselves on the list in person (they do not take reservations), and were told by the host (who appeared clueless) that it would be anywhere from a 20-45 minute wait. After over an hour we were called by phone and told our table was ready. We were seated at a lovely table by the window. Our server (the hostess from the night before) wasn't versed in the menu, the specials, or the wine list. She seemed indifferent to our needs and never once appeared accommodating. After waiting about 10 minutes we finally placed a drink order. After about another 10 minutes a random server came over asking questions about our drink order. When drinks finally arrived, one out of the three was still incorrect. Upon requesting the proper drink, the server snapped that they didn't carry that drink! When we ordered, we asked about specials on the board and the server explained them incorrectly (the nice table behind us showed here their meals which were different than the way she described them). We were also informed when trying to order a Portuguese dish, ""We are out of Chourizo. Is that okay?"" Shouldn't she have told us what the kitchen was out of when we sat down? As the night progressed, plates were cleared as each individual person was finished eating, making us feel rushed. At one point, a new bubbly server took over for the indifferent one and she was fabulous! Unfortunately, she refilled our water glasses, only to pour a fly into my glass! Overall, the food was the best we've had on the island. We only hope that steps of service be introduced to these young servers. A more knowledgeable wait staff would have made ordering the food and drinks easier. Also, having a manager on duty checking on tables would have been great. Finally, a hostess with manners, intelligence or at least class would have been appreciated.
