Review content:
City Ballet is unfortunately a terrible place for children and young adults. It is well known to be an intense Russian ballet school and turns out high caliber dancers, however, they do not nourish their dancers and teach them with understanding and care. The artistic director, Galina, is a mean teacher and completely uncommunicative with students and parents alike. Literally, no questions asked will be answered.
In four years as a parent of a ballerina, I have never been afforded the opportunity to speak with my daughter's teachers and have never received a progress report. Class assignments are made with no communication whatsoever and favorites are clearly played. Policies are ad hoc and applied on an individual basis even though they claim to be policies made across the board.
Lastly, students are not even welcome to ask questions in regard to form or technique. I can not imagine a school where questions from a diligent student are not permitted. How is a student supposed to learn in utter silence.
City Ballet is supposed to be the reasonable alternative to SF Ballet School. Even at SF ballet school, parents are welcome to observe class twice a year, have parent teacher conferences and get a progress report twice a year. City Ballet provides no constructive feedback at all. This is no place for anyone to learn.
