My family has been going to this place for a long time. When I was a child we took both my family dog Tyler and my family cat Sassafras there. I remember peeking up over the exam table watching as the vet gave my cat who was expecting four kittens a clean bill of health. I was nine then. Years passed and we said our final goodbye to both Tyler and Sassafrass in that office. Their loss to us was a little bit easier to bear because of their kindness. Now at 25 I take my aging cat Caramal, one of the kittens mentioned above, and my dog Dark to her.
I keep taking Caramal there because as she approaches her golden age she has needed considerably more medical care. They treat her arthritis gently and aren't rough even when she protests. I can't afford most places. I honestly think that the prices are much more reasonable here in part because they have been in the area for so long, know their clientele and because they know that a lot of people wouldn't feel good knowing the reason they can't afford the medical treatment they need is because there is an extra charge for atmosphere.
The atmosphere was brought up in a current review so I'd like to take a brief moment to go over it. The building is very old and the decor looks as if it has probably been that way since the 70's. A lot of dark wood paneling and old wallpaper on the walls. Amber colored privacy glass by the front door and in small light source windows in the exam rooms make up most of the windows in the building.
The place is very clean, and well maintained. I have often wondered why there wasn't even any pet hair in the exam room. I get a warm mom and pop feeling from the place and yea it isn't some cold, sterile feeling, ultra modern vet's office. What does interior design have to do with good veterinary medicine?
I can say that at least for me the staff have always been pleasant. However, I am one of those people that gets uncomfortable around people that are so bubbly I feel that it borders on insincere and inhuman
This vet has also gone out of their way to accommodate me. When Caramal started having digestive problems I opted to put her on prescription food. This food is generally much more expensive. The vet sent me home with three of the small size bags 100% free so I could see if which flavor Caramal would like and not have to invest in a bigger bag of food that she wouldn't eat. These three small bags lasted me for three months before I had to buy more cat food and of course I went back and purchase her prescription food from them.
When I was unemployed last year I couldn't afford flea treatment for my dog and flea'd him 2 weeks later then he should have been. In that two weeks he got fleas of course. He also has a severe flea allergy and a problem with hot spots so months after the fleas were gone he was still chewing. He had ripped the hair out and was bald and scabby on his whole lower half, chewed his legs and tail raw and scratched his armpits and belly bloody. I've been through his hotspot troubles before and knew in order to make him stop itching I had to get him to stop scratching. No matter how many baths we gave him, cortisone creams we used on him, and antihistamines we tried he would always find a way to scratch himself. We had him wearing a cone, a muzzle and dog boots so he couldn't scratch. He chewed through the tip of the muzzle, pulled off the shoes and bent the cone. I knew at this point the only thing that has a chance of stopping him from scratching was a cortisone shot but I couldn't afford it since I was unemployed. The vet told me that she would wave the exam fee and just charge me for the wholesale cost of materials for the shot itself, not a dime for her time. It worked and Dark is a regular happy dog now.
I would use this vet again and she is my vet of choice. I can and do recommend her for both dogs and cats because of the quality of care, the reasonable price and the consideration I've gotten over the years for all our pets.
