Have been doing my own mechanic work for 30+ years. As I got older decided to let the local mechanic help out. This guy came recommended. Did okay on a couple of jobs but then I started looking more closely at his work. Not good. Today I discovered he incorrectly installed ball joints. He left the zerk fitting out of one which filled with water; and re-installed an old plugged up one on the other. Both ball joints were running without grease. I guess he figured no one would ever look. Earlier I got suspicious when I asked him to adjust the play in my steering gear box. He gave me a great deal, no charge. At home I crawled under the vehicle and looked. The adjuster nut was still crusted with 10 years worth of crud. No wrench had been applied. Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice and goodbye....along with my wife's car, and my daughters and a son-in-law.'s truck. A nice smile may make it seem like you're doing good work, but then I guess he figures only 1 in a 100 will ever really check. That's good enough to stay in business. Too bad, since he gets such high marks from the trusting members of the community.
