Review content:
I love the teachings and I love worship in this church, you can feel so much spiritual presence here....however, this church isn't for anyone who is broken or who comes to seek acceptance from other members. There seems to be a disconnect between spirituality and social reality among members, meaning....most folks are married with children or were married at some point or who are single looking to get married. All social norms apply here and there aren't too many spaces devoted to those who don't fall into the "other"catagory. This seems to be somewhat of a spiritual disconnect as Jesus was known to hang with walks of all life, not just middle class folks. As a single mom trying to find a spiritual place to connect.....it was a 'no go'. I keep returning hoping that the great services and incredible worship could be followed up by something more substantial in groups and meetings outside of sunday service. Don't get me wrong, we have missions going on in Nicaragua and have had some past involvement planting churches in other countries experiencing turmoil, but there is turmoil in our own city. There are people in their last stages of AIDS in Portland, addicts, homeless, etc. I would like to see more reaching out to our OWN community before we start reaching out halfway around the globe. Not that Nicaragua doesn't need our help, but why are we so afraid of our own community? More importantly, why is the church? That is why I go for the Sunday service and worship, so I can connect spiritually and walk away with new perspective on His teachings but that is where it ends....but I keep going back hoping that they will figure it out, because once they do....look out Portland!!
