Union is an open, liberal seminary in a sea of right-wing, reactionary Christians. At Union, a large percentage of the student body are openly gay and lesbian and some faculty are also out. The Seminary is committed to teaching Christianity in a safe environment as a welcoming and expansive religion. Union has always embodied the freedom to learn and the freedom to teach—ideals that may be more critical than ever to churches and society at this moment in history. Founded in 1836, Union forged a new vision for theological education: to center ministerial training in an urban context so that academic excellence and personal faith might respond to the needs of the city. As an independent school of theology, Union's mission is to educate men and women for ministries of the Christian faith, service in contemporary society, and study of the great issues of our time. This is a great place to learn about a religion that has become defiled by its most narrow-minded practitioners to the point that it barely resembles its true roots. Union;s faculty attempt to restore the balance in this country by producing graduates who are thoughtful, open-minded, humble and devoted to serving the world in justice and compassion.
