The Southern California Summer Pro League is a staple of summer basketball for the last 30+ years. Each year rookies from 5+ NBA teams and various free agents, tryouts etc. take their shot at the NBA.
The action is enjoyable and the desires of some of these players, who are not guaranteed NBA-money until their big break, is palpable. The star sighting is also entertaining.
The league operates in early July and tickets are $12 for a da (5 games), so plan on spending some time there.

In the middle of an off-season, the Dodgers still boast one of the most passionate followings among MLB franchises. Dodger stadium is located just north of Downtown Los Angeles on the 110 Freeway and is a Southern California Landmark all its own.
Tickets are cheap, parking is not. Dodger dogs still live up to their reputation in Los Angeles and all in all a visit to a game is still a pretty good time.

In stark contrast to Local betters, the Lakers, the Clippers are kind of the Black sheep of sport franchises, voted once by Sports illustrated as the worst franchise in North American Sports.
Still, their shtick is good value for a basketball team and on that they (kind of) deliver. So do what half the attendees do- go and watch one of the other 29 teams in the NBA try their hand at LA's ugly step-sister.
Parking at Staples is expensive. Avoid if possible.

One of the best and most storied franchises in the North American sports scene, the Lakers experienced a down year in 2004-05 after starting off the 21st century with 3 straight titles. The current Team features Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom, new pick Andrew Bynum and acquisition Kwame Brown and the return of Phil Jackson as Coach.
Tickets are pricey especially if you want to sit at the lower level. Check Ebay and other internet sites for individual sellers to get em cheaper. Staples Center parking can be a hassle and you can save some money and hassle if you're fortunate enough to live near a Los Angeles MTA Rail Line.

Somewhat lost among Southern California's vast array of theme parks and attractions, Knott's Berry Farm makes up for it by having many promotional offers in collaboration with local supermarkets for discounted admission.
Highlights of the park include Ghostrider, Boomerang, Xcelerator, Timber Mtn Log ride, Supreme Scream etc.
Overall a good combination of rides and shows and a pretty good value to boot.

One of the best attractions in the South Bay, the Korean Friendship bell is located where Gaffey Street (which becomes the 110 Freeway) meets the ocean. The giant bell is housed in a Korean Pavilion and is rung 3 times a year: On the US & Korean Independence days and on Jan. 1.
The completely free park features a picnic area, a basketball court and a nearby park that offers some amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and the Long Beach & Los Angeles Harbor. Except on foggy days, Catalina Island is also clearly visible.
Advice: Go on a less windy day.

Surrounded by neighborhoods with less than stellar reputations, Exposition park doesn't get its fare share of attention as a must-see attraction in Los Angeles. The California Science Center is among the many highlights. They offer a fantastic IMAX screen and have many science-oriented movies playing there. Body Worlds 2 was a recent exhbit that generated a lot of attention but other quality exhibits are rotuniely featured in the spacious and kid-friendly museum.
Located just south of Los Angeles' Downtown the drive and parking isn't as bad as you would expect.

Located off Wilshire Blvd, among an array of museums in the area, the La Brea tar pits, stand out, offering a view of the rich scientific pre-history particular to Southern California. The first exhibit that you'll see will probably be a favorite- a mirror based optical illusion showing a Saber tooth cat coming alive from its fossilized remains.
The museum is kind of disappointingly small, they pack a lot of displays and info in there. The movie, labs and tar pit tour are must-do highlights.

Located on Wilshire Boulevard, this place doesn't get much publicity as Museums go, especially with the prominence of the Getty Center, but the LACMA, part of a group of Museums located West and South of Los Angeles is a highlight among Los Angeles' underrated array of Museums & Exhibits. current Highlights include the King Tut exhibit and an excellent collection of art from Asia (Korea, China and the South-Asian sub-continent) in the permanent collection.
Notes: Wilshire Blvd is pretty congested and so are the freeways it connects to. You can't avoid this, so just prepare.
