SBS is East Lansing’s “hip” textbook store. I found that SBS was much more likely to have the textbooks I needed in stock and usually had many more used textbooks available than other area book stores.
As an added bonus, SBS will validate your parking if you park in the orange hamster-cage parking ramp behind the store, which is something I wish more area businesses in East Lansing did. SBS always has plenty of registers open, so you can get on with your life and the other customers don’t see you crying after you just spent $400 on books for the semester.

Whenever possible, I like to use small, hometown providers of goods and services. It gives little radical inside of me a warm and fuzzy feeling because I’m stickin’ it to big business and “the man.” I was pretty excited to be able to try a local DSL provider instead of shelling out money to SBC or Comcast for a high-speed Internet connection. The icing on the cake was that the speeds and prices they were advertising at the time were better than what either of the previously mentioned companies were offering.
Unfortunately, ACD let me down big time. From the day we signed the contract, we had nothing but problems with the service. Specifically, we had major problems with speed and packet loss that ACD simply was unable to resolve. They acknowledged that the problems did reside on their end and dispatched the LEC multiple times to my location as well as to the DSLAM at SBC’s CO. The phone technicians they hired were beyond worthless and it was painful just to contact ACD and give them test results and information that THEY requested.
At the end of our contract, I was able to tear gas my inner hippie and sign up with SBC DSL and then, later, Comcast HSI. I found both of them to be much more able to deliver on their service promises than ACD.

Big Daddy is a taxi company that operates mostly around East Lansing and is used mostly by college students to shuttle them to and from the local bars. As such, riding on a Big Daddy taxi is a unique experience. Nearly their entire fleet is large passenger vans that are driver owned and operated. As such, you won’t see much consistency between different drivers and the comfort of your accommodations.
More likely than not, you will be sharing your taxi with other people, as the service tends to act more like a shuttle bus than a traditional taxi service. The upshot to this is you get to meet new and interesting, but inebriated, individuals. Also, it will result in a pretty cheap cab ride, as they will take you pretty much anywhere in East Lansing for $3-4 per person.

The Holt Community Pharmacy continues to thrive despite having CVS and Walgreen’s just down the street. The reason is the personal care and concern that the employees and pharmacists give you here. They are extremely knowledgeable and can explain everything you need to know about taking a prescription or over-the-counter medication. I highly recommend them for their service-oriented business.

Having used to live right around the corner from The Country Market, I would often jaunt down there for convenience shopping. If I wanted to by some meat for dinner or needed to pick up another case of beer, I would walk down there or swing by on my way home from work.
The Country Market is a very average grocery store. The meats and deli can be very hit or miss. Sometimes they have some great looking steaks, other times it looks like the rummaged through another store’s dumpster. I really see Country Market as a Super Size 7-11 as opposed to a full grocery store.

14 pound balls. Waxed lanes. Smelly red shoes. Let’s face it: Bowling is an American institution. I’m a pretty big fan of any sport where I can drink beer and actually have the potential to perform better.
Marvelanes is a bowling alley and cocktail lounge that is deep into Meridian township, pretty much out in the middle of nowhere. The upshot of this is you don’t have the 8 year olds having birthday parties, bumper lanes and black light cosmic bowling. This is bowling boiled down to its very essence. I’m a bit surprised they have automatic scoring units and aren’t still using manual pin setters here.
Marvelanes is an excellent destination if your intention is to drink and bowl.

Next to napalm in the morning, one of my favorite smells in the world is that of a good, used bookstore. Do yourself a favor and skip the Barnes & Nobles and Schulers and check out the Curious Book Shop in East Lansing.
While they lack a barista or music section, they more than make up with it in their endless volumes of used books. You can find tomes on every subject under the sun and can find rare and out-of-print volumes that the larger chain stores simply do not stock. Since it is located in the heart of East Lansing, parking can be a bit of a hassle, but once you get into the store you will find it to be a very rewarding experience and you will leave with some very interesting books.

Dusty’s Cellar is one of the best places to get gourmet food and wine in Lansing. The selection of wines and imported beers is pretty extensive. The quality of the gourmet food is unmatched, selling both pre-packed food items and items that are prepared on the premises.
Also attached to Dusty’s is a pub and a restaurant, both of which serve exceptional food and wine. If you want to try something new and out of the ordinary, I highly recommend checking out Dusty’s Cellar.

When I was growing up, there came a point in my life where I started to broaden out my horizons and start listening to music that wasn’t played on our local rock stations or MTV. My Dad gave me three vinyl albums with which to begin my quest into the world of great music: The Who’s Who’s Next, Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s Brain Salad Surgery and some random Grand Funk album.
For the next several years, I amassed quite a collection of vinyl albums, both from classic rock artists and 7inch singles from punk bands, another genre I had begun to listen to. FBC, when I was able to get to Lansing, was a great place to pick up vinyl records. They have since expanded their business into used cd’s and dvds as well. Staff is extremely knowledgeable about many different genres of music and can provide very reliable recommendations if you’re looking to discover something a bit new.

I am continually amazed at the quality of productions and performers that the Wharton Center, on the campus of Michigan State University, is able to book. From Broadway hits such as The Lion King and Mama Mia to performances from the likes of Bill Cosby, Winton Marsalis and Jethro Tull, the Wharton center continually delivers.
The Great Hall, while ample in its seating capacity, still feels like an intimate setting and is a wonderful venue to watch these productions and artists.
