Potter Park is no San Diego Zoo, but they do have tigers, a lion, cheetas, monkeys and other large animals that larger zoos have. It makes for a nice day out with the kids. They have a large feline house that is home to the big cats I named above.
During the winter, they decorate the entire zoo in holiday lights. It is a huge hit locally, unless the snow melts, in that case the nearby river floods and the zoo is closed.
If you are a lansing resident, you get a nice discount admission. Be sure to check out their gift shop as well for a nice assortment of animal-inspired gifts.

I wanted to order a dozen roses for my girlfriend (now wife) several years ago, and they quoted me at like $75 for a dozen roses ... and it wasn't near a holiday, so that was their "standard pricing."
Other than prices, their selection is unmatched, and the store has a really nice environment. If you have a few extra dollars to spend on some nice flowers and plants, I recommend this place.

I have visited this course twice, both for company outtings where I work. Both times the course was very nice and well kept, and the clubhouse was well managed.
The beer-cart-girl was definitely on top of her game, as we must have seen her 36 times on the 18 holes that we played. She was very friendly though, as were the others at the clubhouse and the pro-shop.
I understand that they have nice twilight rates, so if you're looking to get in 9 or 18 one evening, give them a call.

I joined the SECU (State Employees Credit Union) when no one else in the area would give me an auto loan (long live the low credit score). In any case, they financed me, gave me a huge APR, and I was off in my new (used) car.
I was unaware that this credit union even existed until I was suggested to them by the car dealership, and I have since grown to like them. Their staff is friendly, their rates are fair (if you have a high credit score), and there are several locations in the Lansing Area.
Recommended.

I once saw this T-Shirt with the slogan "I GOT USED AT NEDS" ... so I had to check this store out. Ned's is a college bookstore on the campus of Michigan State University on Grand River. They recently remodeled the store (a year or two ago), so it is very nice. They have the standard huge selection of text books.
They also have a nice assortment of Michigan State gear, including flags, beer steins, T-Shirts, and tons of other school related supplies.
Sometimes when the Student Bookstore gets overly packed during the first and last weeks of the semester, it is a nice break to stop by Ned's and pick up what you need.

Playmakers is a fantastic sporting good store that looks like a large-chain store. It is locally owned and used to be in the Meridian Mall in Okemos, now it is just down the street on Grand River.
The new store is HUGE, and is rather breathtaking. When you walk inside, you are immediately drawn to the back of the store where you'll see a huge rock formation which forms the second level, along with tropical plants and a mural of paradise.
Whether you're shopping for sporting clothes, or just want to see a fantastically designed store, check out Playmakers. I highly recommend it.

MSUFCU, as it is called, is a great Credit Union open to MSU Students, Staff, and others via business relationships and such. They have locations in Lansing, East Lansing, Okemos, and more. They also have ATM machines in every "QD" (Quality Dairy) in Lansing.
Even though their televisions leave something to be desired, the credit unions are fantastic for a checking, savings, mortgage, or business account. I use them for all of my personal banking and business banking needs, and have run into little or no problems over the years.
Their interest rates are reasonable also.

Mountain Books & Gifts is a small corner store in the Lansing Mall that is full of great gift ideas with a "new age" flare. They offer very unique gifts including jewelry, buddah statues, and there was even an egyptian statue for sale outside of the store front.
The store has a very "organic" feel to it, with gifts and items that seem very worldly. Gems, statues, sculptures, books and music. It reminds me of the kind of store you'd find in a cultured university town, tucked behind some of the major retail chains.
It is a nice change of pace if you're looking for that unique gift for someone you care about.

You wouldn't think that a software company that makes such hits a "Snag-it" would be located in a tiny community like Okemos, but they are.
Tech Smith, located near Cracker Barrel in Okemos, makes the popular screencapturing software "Snag it" as well as a few other software titles. I have used the "Print Screen" button and Photoshop to do screen shots for years, but Tech Smith has invented a way to capture scrolling windows, which is a leap forward in screen capturing.
No longer do I have to take multiple screen shots and cropping them together! Thanks TechSmith!

Outshiner owns several businesses in the East Lansing and Okemos area. In Okemos, on Jolly Road they own a Quick Lube store where you can get your oil changed or wash your car (self-serve car wash).
Outshiner Quick Lube is great because I have yet to see a line or had to wait to get serviced. What's more, if you have multiple cars and you bring them in for an oil change on the same day, you get 50% off the second car (equal or lessor value, of course).
When I lived in Okemos, we would do this every 3000 miles, and never had to wait once.
