I recently discovered the Coolidge Corner Theater. I've been there a few times since to see a variety of independent films. Part of the Independent Film Festival of Boston happened there. One of my guilty pleasures is the midnight movies they show. I've been to two of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Sing-a-longs. They have been trying to make it the sort of thing that happens regularly like the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The refreshments are very reasonably priced and the seats are comfortable. The look of the inside of the theater is more old fashioned compared with the generic megaplexes of today.

The New England Aquarium is built around a large central salt water tank. The exhibits spiral up around it. At the bottom is a popular penguin exhibit. You can shine a fish shaped light on the floor of the tank and the penguins will follow it. At the top of the tank you can watch them interact with sharks. I remember the electric eel being popular to watch (complete with a voltmeter nearby) and a tank where you can interact with small water animals (starfish, etc). The entrance cost isn't too bad compared with other aquariums I have been to. There is a good sized, yet pricey food court attached for lunch.

Munson's Chocolates is located in Olde Mystic Village right outside the aquarium. They have a large assortment of chocolates, fudge, salt water taffy, and candy. One of their main draws is the Chocolate Dipped Frozen Banana, which they advertise on a practically pornographic sign out front. They are delicious, especially on a hot summer day. They have pretty much anything you could want, dipped in chocolate. You can even pick up reasonable priced packages of "Factory Seconds", which are pieces of chocolate that weren't good enough looking ot sell, so they are put together in large variety packs.

I got to spend last Saturday at the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT. The admission is a little steep for the amount of time it takes to go through the place, but knowing that it goes towards taking care of the animals, rather than lining someone's pocket makes it easier. The main attractions here are the Beluga Whales, Penguins, Seals and Sea Lions. There are plenty of opportunities for interaction with children if you bring them. There is a tank set up where you can pet Cownose Rays as they swim by. When I went there was an exhibit set up for underwater exploration, including the exporation of the Titanic.

HIlltop Steak House is one of the many sights along Route 1 through northern Mass. You can see the giant cactus sign from quite a distance and the front lawn is full of plastic cows. The restraunt actually can hold a lot of people. I had arranged an 18 person party and they had no problem accomodating us, along with plenty of other customers. The menu features all different kinds of steaks and they are surprisingly reasonable when it comes to the prices. They even have their own butcher shop if you just want to stop in to bring some home. They also have a sunday breakfast/brunch buffet!

Water Country is a theme park with all water rides. There are a lot of different types of water slides and the obligatory river tube ride and a large wave pool. The wave pool ends up being a lot of fun. The biggest complaint I would have about the place is that it seems like it was built in the middle of a field and there is little to no shade. Bring sunscreen. The concrete also gets very hot, so bring water shoes of some sort. The park kind of sprawls out, so it is a long walk from one end to the other. Especially with no water shoes.

Canobie Lake Park is probably best left as a place for summer corporate outings and not much else. There is not a huge variety in terms of rides and everything has a long line. The most exciting attraction there is the bridge where you can watch the log flume ride splash down and soak everyone in the immediate region. For an admission price of $26 adult there is not a lot to do and you'll spend most of the day waiting in line. If for some reason you get to go for free (job outing, etc), go for it. You're not out any money if you do it that way. The price is in line with other theme parks like it, but there are not as many attractions there.

Hollywood Hits is one of the cheap theaters in the area. They concentrate mainly on second run movies, but they also are likely to have an independent film or two. Tickets for the night showings are very reasonable and the refreshments aren't too expensive either. The theaters tend to be smaller than your local megaplex and they lack the stadium seating that I enjoy in the larger, chain theaters. The value of the ticket more than makes up for it. If you want to go out and see a cheap movie, this is the place to go.

Being someone who doesn't have a washer and dryer at home, I have to resort to going out to do laundry. The Salem Street Laundry is only a few blocks from home. I like to use the normal load size washers and they only have a few of them, and they are always either in use or broken. They also make you buy a card (their machines are not coin operated, you put money on a card). The prices are ok, in line with other laundromats in the area and it has a small parking lot. If you are only able to do laundry during "peak laundry times" (weekend afternoons and weekday evenings), skip this place or you'll spend the entire time waiting for a machine.

Di Pietro's has received a few awards for having some of the best pizza around. Frankly, it's not the best, but you do get what you pay for. One of the highlights for my family is the "Family Special", which is a large cheese pizza, 2 large subs, a large order of fries, and a 2 liter of soda for $20. I especially enjoy the chicken parm sub, it has lots of meat. They recently started pushing their buffalo wings, which are HOT, a lot hotter than I imagined. There is even an attached laundromat if you want a snack when you're washing your clothes.
