Twerps is a small store that offers items for baby and children such as bath products, toys, gently used baby clothing, and resale kid’s items. They also have knitting classes. The selection is pretty good, but their hours are somewhat erratic. I’ve been by when they should be open and they’ve been closed.

Amoeba is a superb independent record store with a huge, amazing selection of mainly used and some new CDs and vinyl. You can get lost in the volume of music here—and they have everything including a great classical section. This is the place to check for that hard-to-find album or CD you lost. Their prices tend to be very reasonable, although sometimes the vinyl can be a bit overpriced.

I only went to Crazy Gideon’s because my handyman recommended it as a place to get a reasonably priced refrigerator. You really have to get in combat mode to go here—the salespeople are the hard-sell pushy type (they make used car salespeople look like wimps) and the place is crowded and dingy. That said, I did get a decent deal. I researched well before I went, checking out my options at all the top chains, and got a name good refrigerator at a price $200 lower than what I could elsewhere. You MUST haggle if you go here (my handyman told me that I needed to get them down to 30 percent of their price to get a deal). It was worth it--I got the refrigerator I wanted at a price I liked, but I doubt I’d go back to get anything else. Most of their selection is junk, and it’s not a pleasant shopping experience.

Fosselman's is that type of ice cream store you just can't find anymore. The store has been in the family for three generations, and they still make ice cream the way they always have--with fresh ingredients including real cream, real fruit, etc. The selection is diverse with everything from Rocky Rock to Raspberry to Green Tea. If you love peaches, go there in the summer when peaches are in season--the peach ice cream is amazing. The store has an eating area or you can get it to go.

I’m not a fan of ‘60s and ‘70s furniture, which is most of what Funnel carries, but I have to admit the selection is hip (my ‘60s-furniture-nut friend loved it). The owner takes used furniture and reupholsters and/or refinishes it with some extremely nice results. They offer a good wide variety of furniture including couches, chairs, tables, dressers and lamps. The store is worth checking out.

Vroman's Fine Writing Gifts and Stationary is located on Pasadena’s Colorado Avenue down the street from (and owned by) Vroman's Bookstore. As with the bookstore, the high quality and selection at this store is hard to beat. They have a great selection of stationary items as well as pens, including calligraphy pens.

About Antiques is the best antique shop I’ve found in the Glendale area. It’s not located in the more well-known downtown (Brand Street) district, but in the northern area of Glendale in a small shopping district called Spar Heights. The store is full of antiques, with lots of unusual items, and the selection is quality and diverse.

Essence of France is somewhat surprising. On the surface, it looks like just another one of those expensive antique French furniture/home decorating stores. But they actually have a very nice selection of affordable home decor items that make great gifts. (Their pricing is not too out of line for what you get.) Plus, the staff is very friendly.

Brand Books is one of downtown Glendale’s great bookstores. The selection is diverse—I found titles I never knew existed—and well organized for a used bookstore. They have a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Prices tend to be reasonable; they also buy/trade books. (As is typically with used bookstores, getting credit for trading books is a better deal than selling.)

Located in downtown Glendale on Brand Street, Bookfellows is good used bookstore with a nice selection of mainly hardcover and some paperback books. They specialize in rare books, so if you’re looking for a hard-to-find book, this would be a good place to check out. The staff is friendly and helpful. Parking on Brand can be a pain on the weekend, so check out one of the side streets or the city parking lot.
