Fowler’s is a great place to go to buy wines, gourmet cheeses, ready-made sandwiches, decadent desserts, unusual ingredients, or European specialties that people tend to want. The cheese selection is really quite nice, the desserts are fabulous and very tasty. The European items include Heinz Baked Beans (an addiction), many chocolate bars like Dairy Milk’s, biscuits like Hobnob’s, a great English tea selection including Yorkshire Gold, PG Tipps, and so on, and lots more. Grocery items can include crystallized ginger, rose water extract, and much more. There is also an eating area with little tables and a great coffee bar.

We went to Hobnob on a Friday night and were incredibly impressed. Live music, elegant setting, attentive and friendly staff, and outdoor/veranda dining! We dined on the veranda and even though a hard rain poured in, we remained dry (a bit cold) and very happy. The restaurant has large old trees surrounding it and you feel you’ve been transported into an old southern gentelman’s home. The food was outstanding, from the complimentary bread to the rich chocolate desserts!!! We ate everything and loved it!!! Very, very highly recommend this restaurant.

Ugly Earl’s may be unimpressive from the outside, and may sound unappealing, but there’s more to it than the name conveys. We went there on Valentine’s after hiking Hanging Rock nearby, on a whim needing a meal that wasn’t fast food. The charming interior took us off guard. Each table had a pink, rose-scented candle, a vase with a fresh red rose, a red tablecloth, and white pressed linen napkins. The server immediately brought out complimentary champagne (Valentine’s Day) and showed us our menu’s. We got something akin to Chicken Cordon Bleu, although I don’t recall the name, and it was delicious. After dinner we were again treated to complimentary chocolate covered strawberries. The whole meal wasn’t over $40 and yet we felt we’d been treated to much more. If you’re trying for someplace nice on a budget, this is it!!!

Cole’s Chop House has atmosphere as well as classy food! They have a fabulous brick/pavers courtyard with gas heaters for warmth, and little raised beds of wonderfully tended flowers and greenery. The steaks are cooked to perfection, very tasty, and quality meat. The sides were well seasoned and prepared, and the desserts (bananas foster especially) are delicious. Atmosphere alone makes this place outstanding (if you eat outdoors). Highly recommended.

I went to a wedding where Truffles catered in their restaurant in The Belvedere Hotel. They did an amazing job, but I can only review from a bystander’s point, not from someone working with the caterer. They were very professional and polite with the tray passed hour d’ouvres, never making you feel rushed or like you’re taking too many. The hors d’ouvres were all fabulous and delicious, but I was NOT impressed with the meal. The salmon was flavorless, the beef tenderloin too rare, and the sides unimpressive if not unlikeable. The dessert was very nice, though just chocolate covered things. So if it’s for hors d’ouvres, choose them. If a meal, maybe sample the food to ensure you’ll like it.

I got a navel piercing here and I would not recommend it. The place didn’t strike me as very clean and there were offensive pictures up everywhere. The procedure seemed clean – the forceps and needle came from a sterilized bag, but the marker used to mark the spot was probably pre-used (he didn’t throw it away after). The worst thing was, my piercing was done crooked. I later found out that the guy who had done it wasn’t Certified yet when he did my piercing (didn’t get certified until about 8 months later!). Go elsewhere.

This German restaurant is really delicious. There was even an accordion player one time we were there. The waitress will always help with choosing good items from the menu. The sauerbraten is excellent, as are the herb-crusted rack of lamb and the wiener schnitzel. Their wines are very nice and the black forest chocolate cake is not to be missed. Great experience!

This restaurant did not get a 5 star because even though I have nothing bad to say, nothing was “outstanding.” The food, gourmet and tasty, and atmosphere, elegant and romantic, the staff helpful and polite. But nothing was superb. You may go away having a wonderful time, but it will be because of the company you’re in, not because this is such a stupendous restaurant.

If you’re in New Bern and want to stop for some ice cream, maybe a hot dog, or such, this is a good place if you’ve got kids. The ice cream was ok, the atmosphere fun for kids. They sell lots of toys and merchandise and the kids will enjoy the paintings of cows around the walls. It is a pricey way to eat a hot dog, but not bad eating. Fun experience for kids.

You won’t be disappointed by Meson Sabika (formerly known as Emilio’s Tapas Restaurant). The location lovely: a restored mansion from 1847 on a wooded estate. Inside the restaurant the decor is reminiscent of a European villa with intimate dining rooms, lace curtains, hand painted murals, vases, and ceramics. On nicer nights, you can eat outside on the brick terrace, whilst overlooking the gazebo, landscaped grounds and oak trees. But the food will be your delight. Though there’s usually a wait, order something from the full-bar and walk around the grounds until your table is ready. Spanish/Mediterranean fare is served Tapas – i.e. appetizer-size portions to share from 2-3 people at a table. Choose from cold tapas (such as salmon on toast points), soups and salads (black bean soup with chorizo), hot tapas (bacon wrapped dates in red pepper sauce), and more! So unique and the food is prepared to please!
