Taking restaurant savvy New Yorkers to dinner in Seattle can be a tough, for the obvious reasons. So here is my strategy: select a restaurant that is in no way trying to be a New York restaurant, a restaurant that is clear about being a Seattle restaurant. For me that is Campagne.
Set in the Pike Place Market (an excellent location for pre- or post-dinner walk), Campagne is the quintessential Seattle neighborhood restaurant, welcoming tourists and locals (who might dine there two or three nights a week) alike.
To dine at Campagne is to watch the Blue Angels fly in formation. It is to witness a corps de cuisine in the seamless execution of a single goal. Campagne is dance.
The hallmarks of Campagne's stellar service are knowledge, personality and discipline. Primary among these is knowledge, for which there is no substitute. The staff is encouraged to read, study and taste. For this crew, there is no end to the learning curve.
While distinct personalities contribute to the experience, the staff appears uniform and professional. Each is asked to stand squarely at table and face their customers because presence shows that they are paying attention and that they care.
Discipline is another critical ingredient of proper service mastered at Campagne. Each member of the staff is organized and capable of multi-tasking at the highest level, thereby creating an environment in which both the server and the guest can thoroughly enjoy the experience and emerge nourished and renewed.
The cuisine is certainly influenced by country French culinary traditions, but there is a distinctly Northwest flavor to the plates. Chef Daisley Gordon relies heavily on local and regional ingredients. Some of my favorites:
POIREAUX VINAIGRETTES-Leeks in white truffle vinaigrette served with croustade
ASSIETTE DE CHARCUTERIE-Served with cornichons, Dijon and stone-ground mustards,
and house-made pickled vegetables
STEAK FRITES À L'ANCHOIS-Pan-roasted beef onglet with sautéed greens, pommes frites and anchovy butter
BOUDIN BLANC AUX DEUX POMMES-Black truffle flecked chicken sausage served with roasted apples and potato purée
TIP: If you are planning on dining before the weather changes, ask if you can dine on the patio.

Going to Las Vegas is sort of like going to a Dave Matthews Band concert. While the stage show may be great, the audience "show" is not to be missed (To be clear: I am a fan of both). Even if you are a gambler, which you absolutely do not have to be to enjoy Sin City, there is no point to going to Las Vegas if you are not going to take in the "show." Staying on the strip is a great call.
So, I have to say, the Bellagio is the hotel on the strip with the highest production values. It is a complete escape from reality. I have enjoyed my time there because it is opulent and way over the top without being too theme-park (Hard Rock, Paris, New York, New York, Treasure Island, Venetian).
Bellagio is spendy. An effective end-run is staying at the Monte Carlo (next door to Bellagio) riding the tram over the Bellagio to enjoy all the dining and entertainment and gaming and shopping options available. The tram runs between the Bellagio and Monte Carlo, 24 hours a day. Trains leave every 10 minutes.
THE NOT-TO-BE-MISSED (and how could you?)Attraction is the Fountain of Bellagio...It packs all the punch of Fourth of July Fireworks and the Disneyland Electrical Parade combined!
Read all about it http://www.bellagio.com/pages/frameset_noflash.asp
Note on Scale or First Time Users: You know that warning on rear view car mirrors that reads, "Objects are closer than they appear" ? Well, something like that applies to Las Vegas and it has to do with the enormous scale of these hotels.
"Objects are farther away than they appear." I clocked it once. From my room at the Monte Carlo to Mon Ami Gabi in the Paris Casino (across the street) was over half a mile.

You would be hard-pressed to find anyone more in-the-know than Klaudia Keller, founder of Choice Linens & Chair Covers. She is a professional event planner who knows caterers, florists, ice carvers, limo drivers, jazz trios and rental companies. Without a beat she could rattle off every outdoor event venue in the Puget Sound. She has seen them all and it is very likely she has splashed her amazing linens on their tables, transforming otherwise blah events into parties with pizazz!
In addtion to her role as your event planner (a guide to shepard you through the chaos of wedding planning), Keller is ultimately about great table cloths. Choice's line of extrordinary linens is beyond compare in Seattle. Damasks, Brocades, Sheers and Cottons. And then there are all the table toppers-votives and napkin rings and tassels and....Her showroom-gallery-laboratory-workshop is a place to behold.
She knows caterers too. I would give her a call.

My husband and I have been seen by Dr. Penuelas for several years. We are huge fans. She has seen us through some pretty difficult stuff with deep knowledge and a gentle bedside manner.
Dr. Penuelas demonstrates excellent listening skills and is very responsive with the right mix of medical and emotional intelligence.
She has an excellent network of colleagues to whom she refers her patients for specific treatment. I have taken her lead and found my eye-guy (Brant Carroll), an orthopedic surgeon (Michael Watt), a dermatologist (Diane Thompson) and a plastic surgeon (Curran Smith).
There are four physicians that practice at Ballard Family Medicine. The front-of-the-house staff is welcoming and professional.
Call to find out which insurance she accepts. I used UnitedHealthcare.

Judith Brown is a wonderful massage therapist. Her studio, in the surprisingly light-filled basement of her home, is on the westside of Queen Anne. I have been several times and my husband as been once. We are both counting the days when we can afford to go again.
She is stronger than her petite frame suggests. The experience exceeded both our expectations.
Her rates are reasonable: $65.00/ one hour and $90.00/90 minutes.
Contact Judith to schedule an appointment and learn more about the styles of massage she practices.

Can you stand it?!?! A cake baker named Wendi Chocholak? You cannot make this stuff up.
I can't remember how we found her, but as we planned our vows renewal and dessert party (opted out of the big reception thing) a great chocolate cake was at the top of the list and after much "research" (picture reviewer daintily wiping crumbs from corners of smile) Madeleine's European Cake was our final choice.
We selected a special occasion cake...chocolate cake with raspberry filing (mousse) and chocolate fondant wrap...
But don't take my word for it http://www.mecakes.com/testimonials.php

Are there actual coffee SHOPS in Seattle?
For several magical years the Market was the start and end of everyday. My husband worked in the Market, my primary client was in the market, our gym was in the Market, most of our dining choices were in (or around) the Market and, not surprisingly, our coffee was near the Market. I miss the Market.
This is perhaps the most hotly contested debate in Seattle. In my opinion the measure of a great coffee house is their espresso, the foundation of Cafe Latte, Cafe Breve, Cappuccino and cafe Americano.
The impossibly nice and capable baristas at Caffe D'arte consistently pull a perfect shot of espresso. Never too hot to drink (piping hot espresso can be a problem) and delivered before the shot has a chance to oxidize, each espresso packs a pleasant, but potent aroma. The flavor is intense with naturally sweet notes of freshly ground coffee. The texture or mouthfeel is smooth and thick. The crema is the color of dark caramel. A pleasurable aftertaste lingers on the palate for minutes after consumption.
The cafe is bright and cheery, even on dark Seattle days and free from the buzz of blenders. Whole bean coffee is available to take home. Pastry selection is limited.

They have been around forever and the name keeps coming back for a reason. They are trusted and professional. I have been up sold product for home-care and it is true to the brand...great!
AND I think they offer a 20% discount for cash!
Plus: I love the great words of wisdom they put on the marquee above their store front. Not only do I get a little nugget of knowledge, DA Burns stays top of mind.
