I have a building in Ballard and am in the middle of reflooring (carpet and tile) all four fabulous apartments, including my own. I have recently become acquainted with Al at American Drapery & Carpet.
With locations in Seattle, Lynwwod, Renton and Redmond (to name a few), AD&C offers terrific service, timely installation and great value. The selection I reviewed was limited (as I was looking at carpet for apartments), but I am sure they will have something you like.
Call Al (425-981-4637 and 206-769-5848). The service and attention inspires enormous confidence, even first time contracts. And there is nothing like new carpet!

The newest addition to the SPL system and definitely the coolest. It's an enviro-friendly building with lots of space, light, and, most importantly, plants on the roof. (Why libraries the world over haven't traditionally had plants on the roof is one of the great mysteries of the architecture community.)
Most of the collection is really good, with the strengths being in reference and fiction. There's a great kid area, plenty of space to hang out, a nice meeting room, handy self-checkout terminals, free wi-fi, and the most helpful librarian in the whole SPL system, Ellen.
So sayeth my husband, Peter, MLIS

Lucky me! Epilogue Books is only blocks from my house.
I started poking around this new and used book store a couple months ago and I keep going back. Their selection is thoughtful. I tend to haunt the business and literary theory sections and always find something I cannot live without.
The shop is bright, even on dark days with plenty of chairs for sitting and and lingering. Prices for used books are very good. Many get new acetate covers.
And now they (sell and) serve coffee. Only recently they opened a Firehouse Coffee satellite in the northeast corner of the building.

Who knew??? I've been sleeping in a river!!!
Years ago I had trouble sleeping. Turns out my crown chakra was stuck in a river (the plumbing that ran in the wall behind my bed). No wonder I could not sleep.
About two years ago I hung sage-colored, Dupioni silk drapery panels on the wall behind my bed and slumber was mine again. It's been a snooze-fest ever since. Turns out I have pretty good Feng Shui intuition which has just been confirmed by Feng Shui consultant and Reiki Practioner Beth Schermer of FUNDAMENTAL FENG SHUI.
Sage is a colored associated with wood (wood drains water) and silk hold the highest energy vibration. These are just two of the many things I learned from Beth in a workshop I attended tonight. Prepared, personable and attentive, Beth introduced me to various Feng Shui traditions, helped me calculate the "best directions" for me and my husband (who is very skeptical but will be pleased to know he is getting the most sleep benefit out of the position of our bed), gave me countless tips for solving the "career corner" of my home (and life), applauded my choice NOT to have a TV in my bedroom and confirmed my suspicion that our "hand-me-down" dining table needs to be dowsed. This woman is good.
Here are some of the services she offers:
FS consultations in homes, businesses and educational settings.
Space clearing and energetic alignment for homes, workspaces, classrooms and events.
Dowsing to read and harmonize Earth energies.
Individual Reiki treatments and intuitive readings for healing and personal empowerment.
Workshops and classes on space clearing and FS.
If you are interested in classes or workshops get on Beth's mailing list. Write to beth@fundamentalfengshui.com.

Dry cleaning is the biggest scam! It is right up there with haircuts and auto work (two service that typically come with a higher price tag for women). It makes me crazy.
Now that rant is off my chest....I like Sparkle Cleaner in Ballard (two locations). They consistently do quality work and their prices are not a moving target. Of course they do not publish rates (no dry cleaner except Four Seasons and Bargs does that) so I tend to ask at drop off, make sure they put the quote in writing and take a copy of the ticket with me.
We have sent them our (easy) alterations with 100% success.
I did have one occasion when I needed them to redo a cleaning (clearly my dressed got missed) and they did it happily.

For anyone wondering, paneer (also spelled panir and paner) is a fresh, delicate cheese (along the lines of cottage cheese or fresh ricotta) rich in nutrients and made from low fat milk. I have not been there in about a year, but I'd have to think this is the place.
This Northgate-area grocery, a haven for vegetarians, carries a large variety of Indo-Pak and Middle Eastern ingredients, such as halal meats (slaughtered according to strict Islamic guidelines), spices, an extensive bulk section of legumes, grains and rice, exotic produce and an entire cold case filled with sweets including barfee (a penuche-textured sweet made of reduced milk, butter and nuts) and gulab jamun (a round, cakelike pastry that is fried and soaked in a rosewater syrup for several hours), plus a wide array of Indo-Pak newspapers and movies. The shop is fragrant with curry aromas; just being there creates a craving for this robustly spiced food. Yams and taro root sit beside bags of various basmati rices. A dal (the Indian word for bean) section features masoor dal (split red lentils), moong dal (skinned and split mung beans), kala chana (black chick peas), rajma (red kidney beans) and chana dal (split kala chang). Requisite breads abound: naan, lavash, roti and poori. The shop also caters, which is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with these magnificent foods. The owners and staff are cordial, knowledgeable and extremely helpful.
If you cannot find paneer, you can always make it:
1 liter Milk
½ teaspoon citric acid or lemon (juice)
2 tablespoon Water
Dissolve the citric acid in water. Bring milk to boil, stirring continuously. Add the acid solution gradually, while stirring.
When the milk curdles fully, switch off the heat. Cover for 3-4 minutes.
Drain into a muslin cloth. Hold pouch under running water.
Press out excess water. Shape and place cloth under heavy weight required (stone slab) for 2-3 hours before using as required.
PS. I was just in that 'hood and they have paneer in a cold case next to deli counter.

It is going to be a lovely evening, so I would head for a place with stellar patio. Madison Park Cafe is it!
The owner of MPC, Karen Binder, is well-traveled and knows food and wine, classic French bistro fare in particular. The dining room is generally hushed, perfect for table conversation, and gives guests the feeling of being in someone's home.

Seattle Weekly's Pick for "Best Place to Meet Single Firefighters," which may or may not appeal to you and your gang...
I have a vague recollection of eating at McCoy's before a Seahawks game, back when they played in a thing we used to call the Kingdome. I liked it for breakfast you could eat with beer.
My pal Doug who lives in the TK Lofts and knows the area recommends it and says, "great bbq especially the brisket."
Here is the breakfast menu: http://www.mccoysfirehouse.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=68&Itemid=46
Another place: The Diner off Washington Street between 1st Ave and the Viaduct, north side of the street 3/4 down the block. Good omelets and huge pancakes. Also good for lunch, good old fashion milkshakes and egg creams.

I am not a big costume person, but I am a fan of Value Village (there are several locations around town including Crown Hill and Capitol Hill).
This thrift shopping emporium really takes Halloween seriously. They sell new costumes to be sure. But their staff also picks through the mountains of donated clothing and accessories and features them on "costume" racks. It has to be seen to be believed. Think "Saturday Night Live" costume department--Mrs. Lupner's housecoat, Mr. Robinson's cardigan, Samurai Drycleaner's jacket, Velvet Jones' pimp threads.
Other options include: Champion Party Supply (on lower Queen Anne) and Vintage Costumers (on Roosevelt at 70th).

Six years ago I had my simple, modern wedding dress (not so much a gown) made by a dressmaker (Elizabeth) at Cicada. From design to collaboration to service it was a stellar experience (my Dupioni silk dress and a organza wrap came in at about $500.00, shoes were $200.00..but that is another review), so much so that six months ago when my husband and I decided to renew our vows, I went back to them. The second time around was hit and miss and miss...all service issues. It really broke my heart. I wanted it to be just like it had been. It wasn't.
Offering a combination of custom and couture dresses, I think Cicada Bridal is worth serious consideration, but be very clear about YOUR expectations for any appointment you make. After all this is YOUR time and money. If you are making an appointment to talk about their process, know that. If you are making a consultation appointment with a dressmaker and want to look at designs and get fitted, know that--and make sure they know that too. And if you can work with a woman named LaDawn King, your chances of success will increase exponentially.
POST SCRIPT-December 4. Just today I went to Cicada with a bride-to-be and it was a good experience. We were attended to graciously and all our questions were answered with patience and a fair amount of humor. So great to have a better taste in my mouth.
