I have used the U-Frame-It in Ballard a couple of times and found the selection of frame wood more than adequate and the hands-on staff very helpful.
They offer a AAA discount which is nice and you can often find a coupon in those Val-Pack offerings that come in the mail.
They have several locations around the Sound. Here is a http://www.u-frame-it.com/ to search for one in your area.

With mom on her way, I am mulling this question again...here are my thoughts about Ray's Boathouse.
The warm welcome that greets you at Ray's stays with you until the moment you leave. The vertical-grained-fir walls of the dining room glow under pinspot lighting from the ceiling, and the well-spaced tables allowed you the privacy you want for hushed conversation. Even after the sun dances across Puget Sound and retires behind the Olympic Mountains and Rays' Sound view is a promise you make yourself for summer a cozy window table makes any dinner memorable and intimate.
Chose a dry, golden-hued McCrea Viognier, with its pear, citrus and toasted-French-oak flavors, to accompany an appetizer from the sea. More premium, hand-picked Dungeness crab than you can eat is perched atop shredded greens and classic cocktail sauce. The crab cocktail is full of succulent snow-white leg meat presenting the perfect balance of sweet flesh and sea salt. When the Penn Cove mussels arrive, their open shells offer bite-size morsels luxuriating in a rosy, silken stew of coconut and red curry. An exotic perfume of Thai basil, chiles, garlic, lemon-grass and ginger rises from the bowl.
For a main course, you cannot go wrong with Chatham Straits black cod in sake kasu. Encrusted in sesame seeds, the kasu-marinated cod gives generously of nut and yeast (kasu is a byproduct of sake fermentation) without a trace of fishy aromas. In the mouth, each tender flake of the perfectly cooked fish is reminiscent of a first French kiss—soft, moist and fleshy—and hints at the forbidden. The accompanying sesame-scented rice cake echoes the nutty flavors imparted by the kasu, and the pale green pool of wasabi-ginger emulsion bites gently with horseradish and zesty heat for excellent contrast.
To finish, try two regionally produced goat cheeses. The firm, creamy Quillisascut goat cheese has a hint of fruit and spice, having been marinated in olive oil and chipotle peppers. The fresh Juniper Grove Farms' tumalo tomme has a dense texture and delivers high notes of grass and earth.

Not nearly as weird as the personal airbrush tanning experience I had in NYC. While it was fun to be tan in March, it was--I imagine--not unlike a lice shower at a women's prison (Follow this: take off your clothes, put a hair cap on, stand with your feet uncomfortablely apart, face the technician who is scrutinizing every inch of your body, make a quarter turn every time the technician says "now," and stand still until she comes back ten minutes later). My recent experience in a tanning booth at Electric Beach Tanning was certainly strange, but not that strange.
This has nothing to do with the Electric Beach Tanning: that was great. The facility is clean. They have plenty of equipment to accommodate walk-ins. The receptionist was polite and thoroughly explained the spray on tan process...he even gave me a plush towel (he could tell I am a plush towel woman) and a tip about holding my breathe so I don't have to fill my lungs with the chemicals (although they are reputed to be safe to inhale...but ick!).
It is just strange to be sprayed that way. And frankly, the spray is cold, which is unexpected. That said, twelve hours later I am pleased to report a healthy, not too suspicious, glow. I'd do it again.
Tan Tips: If you are going to try spray on tan, be sure to exfoliate your body from head to toe before you go. Granulated sugar works great.
Also, wear dark, comfortable, loose fitting clothes to the salon...jammies if you can dot it. It is a little sticky and they suggest you not shower for at least a day.
If you are tanning for a special occasion, go about 24 to 36 hours before the event.

I love fragrance.
I hate department store perfume counters. Walking into one, is often like walking onto an obstacle course or paint-ball court where you have to bob and weave in an effort to avoid getting "hit" with any number of stinky, poorly made designer perfumes being hocked for no reason other than gross-and I do mean GROSS-sales. With no inquiry into the customer's likes or dislikes, department store brand reps assure you that EAU DE WHATEVER is certain to become your signature scent and well worth the $$$$. Even the perfume counter at Barney's on Madison, reputed to be one of the best places to peruse perfume, makes me crazy.
I love Parfumerie Nasreen (at the Alexis Hotel).
Owned and operated for twenty-plus years by Ms. Nasreen Rehmat, this jewel-box of a shop is pure delight. It's the fragrance version of Wonka's chocolate factory. Every square inch and every flat surface is a presentation platform for one exquisite fragrance after another.
When you walk in, you are greeted warmly by Ms. Nasreen Rehmat, who today was wrapped warmly in a pashmina. After only a few exchanges, she (or her equally knowledgeable associate) knowingly directs you to a select grouping of fragrances for you to try. Let her guide you. You will find a fragrance and learn how to wear it.
Her nose is flawless and will never betray you. Today she sampled me on four fragrances and directed me to the one that was best for my body chemistry, in spite of the fact that it was not the most expensive. She is passionate about fragrance...not sales.
If you are looking for or shopping for a perfume, visit Nasreen at the Alexis Hotel or on the Web. Here is the http://www.parfumerienasreen.com/index.php.

First, here is a http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/248654_checkbook17.html to a P-I article entitled, Listing Offers Lowdown on Plumbers. If I knew then, what I know now.
Let me tell you about how it took me two weeks and cost me $50.00 just to have four plumbers look at a project in a vacant apartment in my Ballard 4-plex.
About a month ago my husband called Aurora, Fischer and Best, at the urging of our owner-partner. We did. Turns out only the latter two work on commercial properties, so we scheduled times for technicians to come out. Fischer showed up, on time and turned around a bid in a timely fashion. It was higher than we expected so we kept looking. Best was up next. Note: they require an appointment window (8-12 or 1-5 or something like that) to look at the job and will charge for the appointment. We were charged $50.00. The technician was late and talked over my head. The bid was promised for the next day, but was not returned for three additional working days. The bid was very high.
By the way, neither Best or Fischer have followed up on their bids.
About this time the P-I ran the above noted article. Thankfully we caught it and on a whim called Jim Button who came out two days later, looked at the job at no charge (and even helped my husband replace our kitchen faucet during the call) and returned a reasonable bid in a timely manner, in spite of the fact that he had to attend a funeral for a friend in the meanwhile. We booked him and the work will be completed in a week.
I also stumbled (via Morgans in Crown Hill) on Scott at Simple Solutions. I talked to him, but he was booked solid. I liked that he used to work at Morgans and that they spoke highly of his work and customer service. It gave me the feeling of that "I know where you live" leverage.
I've been saving this story for just this moment. Good luck.

My husband and I enjoyed a low-key birthday dinner in this intimate dining room on the upper east side last January. It was magical to look through the floor-to-ceiling windows as snow fell that night. The wine list has a lot of interesting offerings. The menu is well-crafted. Service is professional. Tables along the banquet can be close, but I felt right at home.
How do I qualify a great date restaurant? First, it lets me focus on my date (as opposed to fabulous--or not so fabulous--food, decor, atmosphere, service or celebrity guests). Second, it makes me thankful I have a room at a nearby hotel (The Franklin)
Other winners include:
Nice Matin
Craft
Prune
Hearth
Bouley
P.S. Side-by-side seating is a nice touch, especially on bench seats, if you can swing it.

The title of this post comes from the inscription, set in the oculus, above the altar at St. James Cathedral. It is the the central idea around which this community gathers, a remarkable community of which I am honored to be a member and volunteer. When there have been times when I considered moving away from Seattle, the idea of leaving this community has given me great pause.
Parish Statement:
We are the Cathedral for the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle and its Archbishop, The Most Reverend Alexander J. Brunett. We are also a parish church for a vibrant faith-community with a long history that reaches back to Seattle's early days. St. James Cathedral began a Year of Prayer and Renewal as part of its three-year Centennial Celebration on November 20, 2005.
We are an inner-city parish with an outreach to many who live on the edge of poverty and loneliness. We are a diverse community that welcomes, accepts, and celebrates the differences we all bring. We exist in the heart of the city, yet sometimes our parishioners come from considerable distances to worship here.
St. James Cathedral is a crossroads where ideas and challenges both old and new are explored in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Our Cathedral is also the center for many cultural and ecumenical events which both reflect and help to shape a vital metropolitan community.
Above all, St. James Cathedral is a community of prayer.
The St. James Cathedral Parish is lead by the Very Rev. Michael G. Ryan, Pastor (recently profiled as one of The Puget Sound Area’s 25 most influential people of 2005 in Seattle magazine's November 2005 issue). He is a remarkable man-intelligent, compassionate, funny and faithful. He has been my Pastor for seven years and I am blessed. He married my husband and me. We are blessed.
Mass at St. James Cathedral is celebrated:
Mon, Wed & Fri, 8:15 am & 5:30 pm
Tues & Thurs, 8:15 am, 12:10 pm, & 5:30 pm
Saturdays 8:15 am & "Vigil" 5:30 pm
Sundays 8, 10, 12, & 5:30 pm
Follow this http://www.stjames-cathedral.org/Main.htm to the Cathedral Web site. Click on Upcoming Events. Advent at the Cathedral is a miracle.

I took the lead from my Judy's Book community and called Steve for handyman services for my Ballard 4-Plex and left a message. He promptly returned my phone call and followed up each and every time we scheduled an appointment. He arrived on time, very punctual. I find his manner to be pleasant. Clearly he had a code of professionalism. I look forward to hiring him for jobs large and small.

It was one of those days--traffic was horrible, stores were packed, I chipped two dishes, someone mistook me for pregnant (that is an odd moment) and my kitchen faucet was leaking. By the time I stumbled into Morgans in Ballard I truly could not string a sentence together.
Fortunately TERRY (as his name-badge read) found me lost and mumbling to myself among the heat registers and chivalrously guided me upstairs to the kitchen faucet showroom. Using small words--he could tell I was in trouble--with good humor he explained only what I needed to know about plumbing and helped me find a fixture that we well within my budget.
At check-out when I lamented, well started bitching really, about what it was like getting bids from plumbers (rude, late, expensive, and charge a time/labor just to bid) he briskly handed me a card for Scott, a former Morgans employee now free agent plumber (I have called him for a quote...report to follow).
Hats off to Morgans.
