This is a copy of a letter I just sent to Hillside Roofing:
Dear Sir:
Thank you for taking my call this morning and being open to my feedback. I am sorry to report that the recommendation you gave me, for Rob at Crown Roofing, did not yield a positive experience. I do not have my calendar in front of me, so my day-by-day account of the last FIVE MOTNHS is not complete, but suffice to say it has been long and frustrating.
I contact Rob as soon as you referred his services to me. At first he was pleasant and responsive and I felt like I had been handed over to someone who was willing and able to solve my roof-gutter problem. He came out for a first estimate and returned the bid in a timely manner. Through no fault of his, the bid was wrong…it covered more work than needed be done and I, embarrassed by my own ignorance of roofing, had to ask him to redo it. The turnaround was not as quick, but eventually (a couple of weeks) I got the revised quote.
Summer kicked into gear and with a new job and some travel I let the gutter project move to the back burner. In late July I re-contacted Rob to get the ball rolling again.
Several weeks and more follow-up calls later we settled on an appointment time for him to meet my owner-partner on the site to get a more precise scope of the project. Rob called that day to move the meeting to another day, but my owner-partner was driving to Seattle from the Methow Valley to make the meeting: rescheduling was not an option. While on-site my owner-partner decided to do some of the work himself and the scope of the project changed. Realizing this might be a drag for Rob I asked, if there was someone better suited to a smaller job and he assured us both that he wanted the job.
That was late-August or early-September. When we left that meeting he promised to get me a revised bid. I have never seen it, in spite of several follow-up e-mails and no fewer than 10 phone messages (all unreturned). The last time I spoke with Rob was two weeks ago this morning, at which time he promised, again, to get me a revised bit before the end of that weekend and call me to get this work on a calendar before the end of that week so that the work could be done before the end of October. The last message I left for Rob asked, specifically, “If you don’t want the job…just tell me.”
This morning I left a message with his service that said, “Having not heard back from you after two weeks and at least eight phone messages I am moving on to another service provider. Clearly you do not want or value my business. You have wasted my time and the time of my partner. I will be sharing my horrible experience with Crown Roofing on two consumer-to-consumer Web sites, Judy’s Book and Angie’s List. Potential clients need to know.”
I understand that people get busy, but Rob failed to communicate or keep his promises and as a result I lack confidence in his abilities and professionalism. Perhaps if he had communicated with me things might have been different. Now I feel stupid and any ignorance about roofing has been compounded by new embarrassment about my naïveté regarding unresponsive service providers.
I would consider carefully before you leverage the reputation of Hillside Roofing to refer Crown Roofing to anyone else.

Seattle prices are among the highest in the region. According to AAA http://www.fuelgaugereport.com/WAmetro.asp, the average price of gas in Seattle is $3.16/gallon. It's 25 cents/gallon more than the current national average http://www.fuelgaugereport.com/index.asp.

Over the Mother's Day weekend I took my not-so-long-ago-knocked-up friend to Me n Mom Consignment Boutique in Ballard (near the lovely Locks). WOW! Was I impressed.
First, it is large and airy, Although the sales floor is perhaps over-merchandised, you won't really feel crowded by stuff. That said, watch where you walk...Tonka trucks and tricycles can be dangerous. We were not there for toys or baby clothes or equipment, of which there was plenty. We were there for maternity clothes.
Pregnancy is one of the times when consignment is a great service. New clothes, like new cars, are spendy enough, but when you know you will only wear them for a brief wind of time plunking down $120.00 for a pair of pants is uniquely insulting. The selection of totally wearable (clean and cute) maternity clothes at Me n Moms is respectable and the prices are right on target. Who wouldn't risk spending $12.00 on a top that they are not quite sure about? No one! Not even a pregnant woman.
The women who work there say they get new stuff in every day.
Brands included:A Pea in the Pod, Motherhood Maternity, Japanese Weekend, In Due Time and Liz Lange.

This is the kind of store where, prompted by the care I take of my friends (by way of great gifts), I find myself asking, "Why don't I take this fine care of my self?"
Schwitzer offers the most inspiring selection of bed, table, bath and dressing (night wear) linens you have ever imagined. This is where I go in the city to buy really beautiful (not trashy) night gowns that, while expensive, last forever (with care).

If you have not been to the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island, you are missing out on one of the great Northwest experiences. If you are a gardener you are missing Nirvana!
At this point I have been three times (mid-summer and spring) and each time the private 150 acre reserve with woods, gardens and bird refuge blows me away.
Take the virtual tour (http://www.bloedelreserve.org/text800/mappage/index.html) and see for yourself!

The universe is clearly trying to teach me a lesson. So far this year my car, my TV, my toilet and, last week, my desk-top computer croaked. Confused and sad we (sweet husband and and I) called (twice) and e-mailed (once) Data Zing PC repair to see if the old girl could be revived.
Although their Web site (http://www.datazingtech.com/) promises "fast reliable service" and "professional results" and "same day response, we never got a return phone call.
Not good.

While I have followed this advice of my "friends" to patisseries and plumbers, I had not until today taken the plunge into the realm of legal counsel. I am pleased to report that, yet again, my Judy's Book community pointed me to a trusted resource.
I have been sitting, almost literally, on a investment property contract (LLC) for darn near 60 days. I know that timing because the time-limit on signing is about to run out. I have read it several times but was not feeling any more grounded in the material for my efforts. It became clear to me about two weeks ago: I need an attorney.
And today I got one. Prompted by the posted review, I called David Leen (Leen & O'Sullivan, PLLC) and asked for an appointment. He gave me his availability and asked if I could get a him a copy fo the contract to pre-read. I could and I did. We met this afternoon for about an hour and it was absolutely helpful and pleasant. He had reviewed the contract before my arrival so he was prepared. He asked pointed question which, while they felt personal in nature, were exactly the sorts of questions for which I need clear answers...he helped that process.
He advised me. I felt like we collaborated on a counter proposal and in the end I walked out of his office feeling clear with renewed confidence in my intuition. I will certainly follow up with him as I take my little project to the next step. He will also be my estate guy going forward.
His office is in an old, beautifully restored Victorian on Capitol Hill (Denny & Belmont), with a surprising amount of street parking available AND free parking
for clients (in the lot) next to the building.
