The ice arena is located next to the theaters and Food Court at Coralridge Mall. We have enjoyed the holiday ice show that they put on each year. It is free to watch. It is put on by all of the people who take lessons at the arena. Not much for seating tho. That is kind of a bummer.
There are also hockey games and open skate here.

What a great place to take your dog. But be careful doing so because there are dog owners who have NO business taking their dog there due to behavior problems (like not trained). Owners who take their dogs on the retractable leashes should be banned from the store or any dog owner from bringing in a dog that is not trained. It is a safety hazard.
Aside from poor ownership of the patrons bringing in dogs, the store has a lot of great homemade dog treats that are all natural. Dogs just go nuts over them! Our favorite is the Cinnamon Swirl.

This is a neat mansion to visit to see all of the antiques and art that is on display throughout the house. They have a impressive collection to see. The picture frames on the paintings I thought were just beautiful. My favorite room was the Victorian bedroom and the staircase in the mezzanine.
The theater is beautiful. They do have live performances in the theater.
Self Guided tours.
Schools get in free.

Terrace Hill is the home of Iowa's governors. The current governors do open the doors to the public so we can enjoy this beautiful mansion. There is so much art and antiques in the house to gaze upon. I really love the old architecture of the mansion.
The stained glass window on the landing going to the second floor is incredible. Amazing it is still around since it was assembled in 1884 and finished by 1890.
You even get to see the governors office.
Tours are Tuesday through Saturday.

This is a neat place to go for family fun in the outdoors. They do offer birthday parties and they clean up the mess and take care of everything.
They offer trail rides for ages 10 and up. I thought it was interesting that kids ages 10-17 are required to wear riding helmets. They offer a couple different trail rides and have horses for beginners to experienced riders. There is a lot of woodland to ride through plus a creek to cross.

This is some place that you wouldnt normally think of to go. But if you really want to learn about plants and trees to grow in Iowa, by golly, this is it! You can learn which plants are best suited for Iowas soil and climate where you are. This has been an outdoor lab to figure out which trees and plants will work in our climate. They have around 375 acres to explore. They like to call themselves a living museum.
The tours are self guided.

The Botanical Garden is pretty neat to walk through. My girls enjoyed it. Adults are $4 and kids are $2. Admission is pretty cheap. The garden itself is nice, but if you take your time walking through and notice the different wildlife running free it is neat. We saw doves standing on the sidewalk and did get pretty close. There were quail in there too. I dont recall the other species we saw.
They are open daily and offer guided tours as well.

They have rotating exhibits at the Des Moines Art Center. You can always call before you go to find out what is currently at the Art Center, which I would recommend. They are going to be doing a grand-reopening of the gallery. Plus they do feature local artists and have book signings. You can arrange for a guided tour for a fee.
