Beware: if you walk into the dreaming, you may find yourself drawn into a conversation that will keep you there for hours. The Dreaming is a gathering place for all lovers of gaming and comics in Seattle. They reserve shelf space for the best and latest in independent role-playing games. This is the place to look for your obscure favorite. Their selection of board and card games is limited. The owner is always happy to answer any questions.

Game Wizard is in Ballard and quite a distance from my home, but I go up there every now and then just to keep in touch. Game Wizard is a local center for the gaming community. The store is small, but jam packed with stuff, and they have a space for gaming next door. There's also good greasy food available down the street and parking never seems to be a problem.

At Acorn, you find a wide array of beautiful yarns, unusual buttons, and clearly-written/illustrated patterns for everyone from the beginning to the advanced knitter. There is not too much space into which to move around, but fortunately the yarns are so accessible that you can plant yourself in an area and have elbow room to browse. The staff willingly offers insight and support for your projects. Acorn offers classes (call or check the website for specifics) and special deals.

I don’t care how lovely the yarns are if the staff within the yarn shop is only selectively helpful to people. My wife went into Tricoter for some yarn, and was hard-pressed to find anyone to help her. When she finally found someone to answer a question, the reply was short and aloof. My wife was not wearing a suit, but she was not shabbily dressed either. She compared notes with friends, and found that they had similar experiences with the staff. I’ve gone into quite a few yarn shops with my wife, and have found that almost all of the other ones had friendly, helpful staff. Acorn Street Yarn Shop in the University District, and Hilltop Yarn and Needlepoint Shop in Queen Anne are two yarn stores worth visiting.

Island Books is everything you want in an independent bookstore and nothing you don’t. In addition to the selection offered (and free shipping if it’s not in stock), Island Books is one of the few bookstores that features local storytelling programs (oral tales, not read from books) for children ages 3 and up, on Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7 pm. Programs are free (call or check website for schedule details), the storytellers are imaginative, and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. The bookstore is located in a strip-mall, but because it’s on Mercer Island, it’s a nice-strip mall.

If you need a bag of mulch, a sweet-smelling herb, or a complete yard makeover, visit the Garden Store. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable, there is a variety of plants from which to choose, plus an indoor room filled with gardening tools and gifts that range from the practical to the winsome. The prices are slightly more expensive than ones found at chain garden stores, but the few extra cents is worth it in order to support the businesses of local merchants.

In our house, you will find a futon sofa-bed, a queen-sized bed, a chair, a coffee-table, several lamps, picture frames and a hutch, all purchased from Comfort by Akiko. We like to buy locally when we can, and Akiko’s boutique offers all sorts of items that enhance our home. Over the years, we have become friends with Akiko, much as one might be able to do so in a smaller town than Seattle. While parking is always an issue in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, there is a 30 minute load zone in front of the store that opens up regularly.

Island Video has a good selection of low and medium budget films as well as the mainstream Hollywood releases. Independent video stores often highlight groups of films in interesting displays to introduce viewers to a wider variety of selections. Television series are also on-hand to rent, although some of the older series are only available on VHS. Return rental times are reasonable. Parking is a bit dicey, but a handy drive-by drop slot is located on the south side of the building.
