I've never gotten customer service to compare to Blarg! Online Services. The engineers invariably know what they are talking about. This is a local company offering DSl and dial-up, and the owners care about the quality of the product. I have no hesitation about referring friends to Blarg, though I am not using them myself currently.

I've been an Oz.net customer off an on for several years, although currently I do not use their services. Oz.net offers DSL and dial up networking. Oz.net recently joined services with a company called The River to offer larger hosting solutions and the like. Fortunately, they haven't lost their local expertise. When I was an Oz.net customer, I found their support to be quite good, though hold times were sometimes long. Friends of mine still swear by them.

I've had DSL service with a bunch of companies in Seattle, and Speakeasy is far and away the best. Their price is very good, customer service is excellent, and the services are top notch. Speakeasy is particularly well known for their proactive approach to anti-virus and maintenance. Speakeasy also has a hosting service which is highly recommended. Be warned, however, that the costs for Windows-based hosting and SQL Server databases are very high. For that reason I would not recommend them as a Windows hosting service.

Children’s books aren’t just for children! The best books appeal to people of all ages on different levels, and Shauni Hazelitt of All For Kids just might be one of the subgenre’s biggest fans. This independently owned bookstore offers a variety of resources: a good range of current releases with tried-and-true backlist items, the full line of Folkmanis puppets, music, character-themed trinkets, and more. Authors love to do book signings here, and the Seattle Storyteller’s Guild meets at the store on a regular basis. Sometimes there is original art by renowned illustrators to admire. Parking is limited, but I’ve never had trouble finding a space.

The Bellevue Regional is an excellent library and an excellent system (King County Library System.) They have good programs for children and toddlers, a variety of reading programs for all ages, and a great collection. The staff is generally helpful and intelligent. The reference floor is quite a pleasant place, although getting an Internet terminal can be challenging at peak hours.

I'll bet an author you like is giving a reading at University of Washington this summer. Like Elliot Bay Books, UW has an excellent schedule of readings. The UW bookstore doesn't have quite the atmosphere of Eliot Bay Books, but it has a more comprehensive collection. The staff recommendations are excellent as well.

Between Elliot Bay and the University of Washington Bookstore, Seattle never wants for literary entertainment. Elliot Bay's readings program is excellent. The store itself is something of a historic landmark, set in Seattle's Pioneer Square. This is a good destination for visiting book lovers. There are also some used books available and a cafe downstairs.

Who doesn't? My two year old daughter likes the zoo, so that pretty much means that I like the zoo. I'm not a zoo expert, but Woodland Park Zoo seems pretty good to me. Sometimes it's a little hard to get through the press to see the gorillas, but I wouldn't say the crowds are oppressive. There's good variety and the whole place has a very pleasant outdoors ambience. Great for families.

Great games at half the price of a case of beer. Well, imported beer. Cheapass makes games that are cheap. Most of their games come in a paper envelope, are printed on cheap cardstock, and don't include dice or pawns. Then again, you probably already have a die somewhere. The games are extremely clever, entertaining, and quick to play. Next time you're trying to gather three friends for a six hour Age of Renaissance marathon, consider buying three or four cheapass games instead.
