Now Serving Coffee in the English Language
Monday, June 19, 2006
I had an amazing conversation today at Seattle's Best on Spring across from the SPL central branch.
Me: Double Americano, tall with room.
Barista: Would that be a small, medium, or large?
Me: You serve a small coffee?
Barista: Yes
Me: But that's amazing!
Barista: That's what people are saying.
This comes as a sort of revelatory answer to a personal crusade of mine. For years I had persisted in ordering a small coffee. It stands to reason that if coffee is available in different sizes, one of them must be small. Sadly, the coffee business (I'm blaming you, Starbucks), refused to accept this simple reality.
But it seems a new light is dawning. At least one mainstream coffee company has decided to abandon its pig-headed denial of reality and enable people to order coffee in English. Hurray Seattle's Best!
