I had an amazing conversation today at Seattle's Best on Spring across from the SPL central branch.
Me: Double Americano, tall with room.
Barista: Would that be a small, medium, or large?

I had an amazing conversation today at Seattle's Best on Spring across from the SPL central branch.
Me: Double Americano, tall with room.
Barista: Would that be a small, medium, or large?
Me: You serve a small coffee?
Barista: Yes
Me: But that's amazing!
Barista: That's what people are saying.
This comes as a sort of revelatory answer to a personal crusade of mine. For years I had persisted in ordering a small coffee. It stands to reason that if coffee is available in different sizes, one of them must be small. Sadly, the coffee business (I'm blaming you, Starbucks), refused to accept this simple reality.
But it seems a new light is dawning. At least one mainstream coffee company has decided to abandon its pig-headed denial of reality and enable people to order coffee in English. Hurray Seattle's Best!

It's probably been over a year since I visited the Madrona Hi-Spot. But when I walked in the other day five minutes after closing, not only did the owner remember me and ask about my daughter, he went into the back to get the last ginger cookie so I could bring it home for my wife. Now that's a nieghborhood cofee shop.
I should also mention that the Hi-Spot has excellent ginger cookies and serves a variety of fine breakfasts. There's a small outdoor patio for warm summer days. The place can get a little crowded on weekends, but its probably worth the wait.

Cafe Zum Zum downtown has great Pakistani food, but as far as I know, it's a lunch only place. It's been several years since I ate there. When I worked downtown it was my favorite lunch place by far. It has moved since then, but I beleive it's under the same management.

Tully's is a good coffee shop. But it's not great. Currently Tully's ranks second in the Seattle top 10. That's just not right. In a city loaded with great coffee, I just don't think Tully's deservest hat fame. So I'm giving Tully's a good rating to balance out the greats. Yeah, I'm just a mean guy.

I'm still a Deluxe fan, but I think their menu has gone down hill. First the good: it's still a great atmosphere, and it still has great burgers. It's still my favorite burger spot on Capitol Hill. The non-burger menu, however, seems to be going downhill. The last two times I went there, me and my companion ordered non-burger food, and every item was essentially the same: a fancy peice of meat smothered in an unimpressive sauce. I've always loved the menu at the Deluxe, but in future I'll probably look at it as just a burger and beer place. Has anyone else experienced this?

India bistro is some of the best Indian food in town, and that's saying something. What really shines about it is that it's authentic Indian, but it doesn't taste just like the next Indian place. Their lentils are seriosly to die for. If you've never had great lentils, then check it out. I recommend ordering the buffet if you're coming in for lunch/brunch.

Bauhaus is the quintessential Seattle coffee shop. It's hip and brightly lit and full of the beautiful (and not so beautiful) people who make up the Seattle scene. It's on Pine right between downtown and Capitol Hill and has a view of downtown. It's also much more habitable since smoking was banished outside. For some it may be a bit TOO much of a scene, but it sure is a great place to people watch.

Chesterfield is our neighborhood pharmacy. The owner makes an effort to get to know his customers, and always greets us by name. You'd be lucky to find that at a big pharmacy chain. They've also got a full selection of products available. The location is central and there's plenty of parking around back.

Actually, my cat hates it, but that's normal, isn't it. What's important is that I like the Capitol Hill Animal Clinic. Many of our friends also use this veterinarian. The staff is friendly and helpful. Parking can be a bit of challenge, although there's usually a spot just around the corner. The waiting room is smallish. The vets are very professional and seem quite knowledgeable.

Jaywalk is a new store in Madrona specializing in eclectic gifts and art objects. I found a truly unique necklace for my wife with glass beads that were evocative of pomegranate seeds. That's not something you'll find just anywhere. The staff is very friendly. The space is small, but it's crammed with unique items including jewlery, household objects, small furniture items and even CDs.
