Coming from Austin and San Antonio, it's difficult for Galveston Mexican restaurants to measure up, but The Original gives it the old college try. The menu is pretty standard, and overpriced for the portions that are presented. However, it's relative proximity to UTMB and the cruise chips makes it a good lunch choice. If you don't want to leave the island for TexMex, you could certainly do worse than here.
Bottom Line: Decent TexMex at an inflated price. Nice atmosphere for singles, family and couples.

You'll have to catch em when they're open, but it's worth it. A favorite of UTMB associates, the fresh breads, sandwiches and baked goods are enough to make any health nut happy. The prices are very reasonable, and they even do large orders and catering (for those block parties). Tourists should make it a point to find this place before they leave, it's worth it.
Bottom Line: "THE" sandwich shop on the island. Great cakes and breads as well.

I visited this place a few times when I first got to Galveston and the food was 'ok', but then it just turned bad. Burgers were always cold; fries undercooked. The restaurant closed and retooled, and I have not yet visited since it reopened so things might be better, but I have not made the journey to try it out again. If your kids want a slice or a quick burger with a view, then you can give it a go. I'd rather hit a Wendys.
Bottom Line: Food was bad; good view though since it's located on Seawall.

Disclaimer: wife loves this place. It's a very 'cute' establishment with a great menu and friendly service. Beware, it can get rather busy, so between limited seating and long lines (you order before sitting), expect to spend time before eating (bring a snack). The food is well worth the wait, and please save room for the homemade desserts (lemonade cake is the best). If you are in a hurry for breakfast, be sure to drop by for a quick muffin, you won't be upset.
Bottom Line: Fun, eccentric, casual atmosphere that delivers great food for a great price.

This is an 'upscale' restaurant, so be sure to dress appropriately, unless you're going for lunch. All in all, a strong restaurant. The chef is happy to put together things off the menu for you (make your own surf and turf, it's rather good) and you won't be disappointed with anything that you choose. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to help you select just the right wine for the meal. Best buy though is during lunch, when you get the same food for a vastly reduced price. Atmosphere is cozy but not quite casual.
Bottom Line: Great date place, or if you want to smooze the boss over lunch I say go for it.

The title says it all. This mainstay of Galveston has been around since my grandmother visited as a young girl. Hell, the owner recognized her when we visited a few years back, if that helps demonstrate this family's devotion to its customers. You'll taste some great family recipes in a nice, quiet environment listening to Sinatra. Remember to bring cash or check though because not only do they not take American Express, but they also do not take Visa, Discover or MasterCard.
Bottom Line: You can't go wrong with a meal here, it's absolutely wonderful.

This is probably as close as Galveston gets to yuppie. That's not to say that only yuppies frequent it, because it's mostly residents, students and tourists. But, it's fairly expensive for the drinks (they make great martinis though) and the decor reminds me of something you might find in a swanky part of Chicago or Dallas. Great place to meet interesting individuals, or simply relax with friends. Catch it on a live music night for a good ol' time.
Bottom Line: Good drinks, but expect to pay for them. All in all a nice experience.

Let me preface this with the statement that my wife did not enjoy this restaurant. It is 'country' through and through, including the uncomfortable seating and cheap vinyl tablecloths. However, I thought the food was palatable for the price, and it's a good place to sit out on the patio and view the Gulf with a cold bear in hand. Families are certainly welcome here as well.
Bottom Line: Laid back atmosphere with a wonderful patio view. Bring the kiddos and let them eat steak.

The title says it all, if you're a fan of sushi. Admittedly, there are few choices for sushi on the island, but this is the only one to consider. Great range of hand rolls, sushi, sashimi, tempura and full meals. They have great cocktails and wonderful happy hour specials. Might I suggest the Louisianna rolls and the tempura bananas dessert, my personal favorites.
Bottom Line: The only place to consider for sushi in Galveston. Enjoy the intimate atmosphere.

Well, what more is there to say, besides be sure to bring your credit card. This is the mainstay on Galveston Island for great seafood and steak. Always fresh and tasty, locals and tourists alike use this place to measure against all others. The only downside is the price, which can be rather hefty. So, be sure to head over for a special occassion, or if you have money to burn.
Bottom Line: Great food at a hefty price; wonderful view as it is located on seawall.
