Hotel spaces on the island are not sparce, but decent-sized, comfortable rooms with a great view are. If that's what you want, stay here. Located on Harborside, all rooms have a view of the harbor. Each room is a loft style with comfortable furnishings. Proximity to the Strand is a plus, but you'll have to drive if you want to visit the beach (or rent a bike somewhere). Prices can be reasonable if you come at the right time, but certainly cheaper than some of the other hotels on the island.
Bottom Line: Great view, great room, competitive price.

I know what you're thinking because it's the same thing I've been thinking all these years. This small diner is a staple on the East end of the island, mainly for the $3.99 breakfast (not available on holidays or weekends). The food isn't bad (similar to a Denny's or IHOP), but it's considerably closer to those @ Fish Village than the other mentioned diners.
Bottom Line: Food OK, Price just right.

Everyone @ UTMB knows this place because it's right outside the front door next to Shriner's. Tourists need to know about it as well. It's cheap, quick and tasty. They serve up great american staples like meatloaf and chicken fried steak with fresh sides -- all at a cheap price (<$6). Only downside is the hours, so don't try to go there outside of the lunch period because you'll be disappointed.
Bottom Line: Great lunch spot: food cannot be beat for the price.

That's right, I said it. Finally, a great place to get cheap, fast, fresh breakfast burritos close to UTMB (walking distance). It's a favorite among those who know about it, so hopefully the word will get out. They make em how you want em, have great salsa, and provide an overall pleasurable experience. 1 is usually enough, but if you're really hurting post-call, go for 2 before taking a nap.
Bottom Line: Breakfast tacos cannot be beat. Haven't been there for other meals, but assume the food is good as well.

I'm sure most locals have visited at least once. Tourists likely have as well considering its placement on The Strand. It's a high energy place, usually full of young-uns on the weekends when live music is rocking. Stay away from the food, drinks are safe. If you have a heart attack you're in good company with all of the students and residents around. Probably not a bad place to snag a soon-to-be-successful mate :)
Bottom Line: Enjoyable, especially with friends and live music present.

I differ from friends on this review. They love it, I don't. Since I'm writing this review, I suggest you stay away. The food is usually bland, and that's when it's not cold. The prices and portion sizes are standard for mexican restaurants, but the taste is just not there. Feel free to prove me wrong and visit on your own, but don't say I didn't warn you.
Bottom Line: I would not visit again (been there 3 times already). Portion sizes and prices are ok.

I visited this place on a whim with some friends who had been there before. They liked it enough to return, and after eating there I can say I liked it enough to return, just haven't had the chance yet. They serve up cajun seafood staples, but when I was there the crawfish poboy was off the menu. Portions are pretty good for the price, meaning you won't leave hungry, which is always important at casual joints like this.
Bottom Line: Good food for the price. Probably better for lunch than dinner.

In the same vein as Bennihana and Tokyo Steakhouse, Yamato is great food and great fun. Our entertainer/server was great, only burning us once (joke) and serving up a tasty heap of fried rice, steak and chicken. They also offer sushi at a good price, and take some home for your midnight snack. Reasonably priced for the fun and food, I would highly recommend this to locals and tourists alike.
Bottom Line: Gives Bennihana a run for the money, and probably wins the race. Be sure to have fun with it.

If you're visiting, and you happen to come through Houston, do yourself a favor and stop @ Niko Niko's for some great greek food. Back to Galveston, Olympia Grill is not bad at all. In fact, it's pretty good aside from the small takeout portions. The setting is rather bland (shopping center), but the food makes up for it. Bring yourself and a date for a good time. And be sure to get the greek salad, it's wonderful.
Bottom Line: Atmosphere not great but the food is.

Visited here a while back and wasn't impressed, so haven't been back. However, what I do remember is a lot of fried food including catfish, shrimp, etc. They also have burgers, chicken fingers, etc for the kids or seafood averse. All in all, the food was forgettable. However, Benno's has a nice plot of land (right next to Nate's) with a great view of the Gulf. Head over there for a beer or two during the fall when the wind is blowing, you'll enjoy it.
Bottom Line: Food is forgettable, but can't say the same for the view.
