Ever been to the opera? Ever been in an historic opera house from the 1800s? Here's your chance. It's a lot of fun to sit and watch a top-notch performance in this building, with all of its beauty and splendor. Bring the kids and your husband, if they can be quiet. Afterwards you can enjoy a walk on the stand, purchase some ice cream and then head home.
Bottom Line: Great place to see an opera, if there is a showing you want to see. Not as much fun if you aren't interested in the opera that is playing.

Located near the municipal golf course, this driving range is the perfect place to practice your shots before losing some money to your friends. After spending between $5-$10, depending on the size of your basket, you can hit towards the airpark until your heart's content. Granted, you'll never actually hit it far enough to get on the landing strip, it's always fun to try. For an added bonus, work on your pressure skills by hitting shots when small planes are landing in front of you.
Bottom Line: Inexpensive way to practice and spend an afternoon. Hit away....

Does anyone come to Galveston to play golf? Doubt it. However, if you're visiting, or if you live here, this municipal course is great! Set off of Stewart road near the airport, there are some well designed holes with water that really make you feel like you're at the beach. The front nine is not quite as challenging, or as interesting to look at, as the back nine, so remember that if you're on a time crunch. Otherwise, enjoy the scenery and try to keep it under 90.
Bottom Line: Great place to hit a few with some buddies. They offer a driving range and putting green to practice on as well.

This is basically the educational version of Seaworld. There are a few pyramids each containing different attractions, including an aquarium and a rainforest. There are occassionally some new attractions that rotate in and out, including a dinosaur exhibit and a space exhibit. At Christmas Moody does a 'trail of lights' that cost way too much and offers way too little. Basically, if you've done this before there's almost no incentive to go back, unless you want to visit the water lagoon.
Bottom Line: nice thing to do if you've never been, but otherwise not worth the inflated prices.

Considering it's the only theater on the island, it's not bad. If you don't mind driving 15 miles north, you can go to the Mall of the Mainland theater which is much newer and cleaner. Regarding this theater, the screens are small, the chairs are uncomfortable and the theaters are usually dirty. However, there's hardly every a large crowd, even on opening night, and the prices are decent by today's standard.
Bottom Line: If you want to see a movie right away without driving off the island, this is your only choice.

Consistent with any other IMAX, the screen here at Moody Gardens' IMAX is huge. There's nothing quite liking being in front of a massive, multi-story building watching predators hunt. The shows are rotated at this theater, almost always educational instead of first-run cinematic releases. Take your kids to learn about sharks, coral reefs, dinosaurs, or anything else that interests them.
Bottom Line: Great place to spend an afternoon and learn something new. Try to catch a 3-D film!

An interesting idea, place a hotel out on the water. Not close to the beach, but actually out in the gulf on a concrete pier. The views are spectacular, and the hotel has recently been remodeled, which only adds to the lure of this hotel. It's a comfortable hotel with clean linens and a good amount of space to relax in.
Bottom Line: Not the most luxurious, but certainly worth the money. Bring the kids and stay a while. Just be forewarned, there are 2 large, topless mermaids on the outside of the building.

Located off of the Strand area, this hotel is at the forefront of 'boutique' in Galveston. Small in size, but big in stature, the rooms are of a modern design set inside a beautiful, historic building. When Mardi Gras comes to Galveston, the parade goes by in front, giving you a perfect view. It's the perfect hotel to spend that quick weekend with the spouse as a romantic getaway.
Bottom Line: Beautiful decor in an historic building, perfect for that romantic getaway.

Great view, great family feel. This resort center is located off of seawall, giving all rooms a wonderful view of the Gulf. There are two buildings, one for the hotel and one for the condos. If you are staying here, plan on spending some cash. Don't fret, you'll get your money's worth. There area host of nearby restaurants to enjoy, along with beach rentals, jet-skis, etc. The architecture is not as impressive as the Galvez, but the amenities are comparable and the rooms more comfortable.
Bottom Line: Expensive, but if you can find a deal it is worth the price. Now that more national chains are coming, this hotel will have to drop prices to compete.

Considered 'THE' wedding venue on the island, the Hotel Galvez is a beautiful historic hotel maintained by Wyndham Hotels. There are a wide range of amenities from pools to bars to a wonderful Sunday brunch. The beach is just across the street. A foyer and restaurant/bar allows guests to relax in their bathing suits or pinstripe suits. The architecture is beautiful, but the rooms are small and cramped.
Bottom Line: Beautiful place with great amenities; if you want to get married, do it here.
