Pho Pasteur is now a chain of Vietnamese Soup Restaurants. It started with a location in China Town, blossomed in Alston Brighton and now has locations in Needham, Cambridge and elsewhere. Today's focus is on the Needham (Western Suburbs) location.
The beef ball Pho, big bowl is delicious. This beef stock can be served with white or yellow noodles. The variants include beef balls, beef flank, and other parts of beef. The restaurant has modified it's menu from the Boston and Allston locations to not include tripe and tendon. I hope at some juncture as suburbanites get braver, that these two standards return to the menu. Check out the appetizers---shrimp on sugar cane, quail, spring rolls (real ones not those fried for USA citizens ones) are available. Oh and the Pho (soup) comes with a heaping side plate of sprouts and mint sprig, not to mention the top of the soup is covered in a kind of basil.
Let's just say you don't want soup, there are plenty of Vermicelli (white rice noodle) plates to choose from. Usually there is a small spread of chopped nuts and a pork version that tastes good.
Let's say you just don't even feel like eating Vietnamese cuisine, well this Needham location has a sushi bar with a variety of sushi to try. I always recommend Uni (when it's fresh). This is raw Sea Urchin.
The setting is nice. It's almost a box car like set up. Booths running in a long thin row the length of the restaurant. Pleasant clean bathrooms and for warm weather, and unique for Massachusetts, is a set of outdoor tables in a little terrace. One can almost pretend they are not in Needham.

This is just a fun store to walk into. How often are you flooded with light and from fixtures that look like they sometimes predate the lightbulb. The store consists of little aisles, each with setups displaying different fixtures, candelabra, chandeliers, beauty lights and standup indirects. You can really get lit in here. On top of the lights there's quite a few mirrors around. Anyone trying to make their home brighter, may want to add more mirrors as mirrors by virtue of what they are, reflect light. The staff at Neenas are sophisticated and welcoming. There's a certain old world charm to this store. The days of specialized stores in Greater Boston being easy to find and access are few and far between. Neena's is easily located and situated on route 135 in Wellesly. There are plenty of town parking meters all within a four minutes walk from the store. Wellesley College and one of the Nation's pretties Fire Stations is located right next door.

Jacadi is an eays place to purchase clothing for your youngster. The clothing is of high quality, natural fibers and of European Design. This means easy to use straps, covers over little sharp objects, a certain fun to look at quality and some innovation . One of my favorites are the overalls that have buttons at about the knee point, so that the jump suit can be lengthened or shortened dependent on the weather and the child's growth spurts. Other interesting objects include furniture, a variety of natural colognes for babys and a great selection of footwear. The shoes all look orthopedically savvy, but I'll leave that for a doctor to decide. Suffice to say they have high backs and built in arch supports for those flat footed kids. I even saw some very exciting winter boots. Winter boots are great for kids because we forget with proper dress, kids can go outside in the winter and probably should. Long distance eye development is really contingent on seeing things that are far away, having a clothing store with comfortable all weather gear certainly makes new england a lot easier.
Ah yes the staff. The staff are helpful, delightful and quite knowledgeable. As another aside you can keep your eyes on certain racks to watch for decent discounts sometimes as high as 60% off.

The Cheese Shop of Wellesley is smack dab in the center of town. This is quite a store. One can smell the aroma of the strong tastey cheese from outside the store. The cheese is all imported, fresh and if one likes aged cheese, then you've found the right place. Try the aged Muenster.........it's an amazing cheese. The clerks are very knowledgeable (perhaps they are the proprietors). The are also willing to provide sample of cheese to insure that a customer purchases something they like. in addition to cheese, one can just spend time looking at the vast variety of foods from around the world. This includes vinegars, olive oils, teas, sauces, chocolates, even a small section from Japan. I'm stil pressing them on occasion to stock Marmite or Vegemite for those of us with the "hankering". There are also a variety of licorices, chocolates as mentioned above, cookies (ginger snaps are great) and bread sticks. I think this is a great place to saunter into on a rainy day. One can walk out tasting the world, when one is strapped to their desk or it isn't vacation season, and through cheese relive that European Vacation. The owners are willing to special order items too.
Great store.

Rosies Bakery is a wonderful addition to the downtown scene in Wellesley. They have converted the space of a former Aux Bon Pain, quite nicely and thus one is transported into a new store. The store has a nice selection of fresh baked cookies, muffins, brownie style foods and cakes. The coffee is good and it's a local place, it's not one of the franchises that serve coffee located in close proximity. Rosies has two or three other locations in metropolitan boston and for the most part is a small family circuit of venues.
The ambience is nice. There is a table in the back of the shop with kids toys and books. There is ample seating so there is a cafe feel and the front of the store has lounge type seats, where one can flop and watch the folks stroll up and down central street. The sandwiches are generally good and the coffee is fresh and decent. You can sit undisturbed for a long time. There are also four tables outdoors under the awning so one can feel like they are dining Alfresco style almost into winter. The people that frequent the store are diverse and one is always watching students enter and work on their home work. This is a nice place year round, warm in winter, well air conditioned in the summer. Staff are young and friendly. Enjoy!

The Rugged Bear in Wellesley has a great line of baby to kids clothing and accessories. They have an easy ramp for folks with mobility challenges to gain access to the store, at least to the cashier level. This also makes it easy for those that are using strollers to proverbially roll on in. The store entrance as one enters has baby carriers, back pack style, kid sunglasses and a variety of small amusements. The clothing selection is rotated to accomodate the varying seasons. There is always something on a bargain rack that can be purchased and stowed for the future. Of particular note, is for parents who like to dress their kids formal. The store has dress shirts, dresses, gowns and small suits and suit coats. The help is always courteous and accomodating. Meters for parking are always available at public parking places within one block. I think this is an easy store to shop in.

This is like an old world sporting goods store without any of the push of big chain stores. I like it because I can walk in and always get a good pair of sneakers or hiking shoes at a very decent price. There is always something on a rack that's discounted. The store has a great assortment of baseball gear, yoga mats, winter gear, summer swim gear, snorkels, fins, boogie boards, and then some random fun toys near the register.
It also has a good selection of sunglasses and sports style wrist watches. The store is reasonably handicapped accesible in the sense that there's a big ramp right at the entrance, though the doors are not electric for folks with handicaps. The sections for footwear are stocked well for both mens and womens shoes. Usually upon entering the store and walking up the ramp there is a friendly store clerk that comes up fast to ask if one needs help. I've never been in the store and not been asked for help, which is nice. The clerks never tried to hard sell me into anything. I can go in, try on things and leave. I like this approach. it's got parking nearby in meters in Wellesley Public lots which also are not unreasonably priced. Essentially the store is a stone's throw from Route 9, or Route 16.
Check it out.

This is a fun place to eat at. The environment is reminiscent of an old roadside barbeque joint. There are a few varieties of ribs and a few varieties of pulled pork/chicken. The menu of sides is southern style. I like the collard greens, which are hard to find at any restaurants in Metrowest. I also think the cornbread is good, the homestyle beans etc. You get your meal on paper and plastic on a tray. There are big cannisters of different sauces to try out. Napkins exist in the form of papertowel that gets pulled off a large roll.
this place is just a few minutes from the cinema. The food comes fast and hot. You can order combination platters or even large style family dinners. You can also have these folks cater your party, in essence try it before you buy it. You can watch the cooking and smell what's cooking from outdoors. It's an interesting place to be sitting in the midst of the dense shopping metropolis of Framingham / Natick. If you don't look out the window you can almost forget you're surrounded by miles of mall. Oh there's french fries and sweet potatoe as well. As there's not much barbeque in greater Boston, this is a real plus. It's not really expensive either. Check it out.

There aren't many places locally that one can get themselves a grilled reuben or rachel. There aren't many local places in Boston or Cambridget that one can get a beef tongue sandwich or potatoe latkes or great sides of coleslaw and pickels. Joan and Eds is the place. I love to pair coming here with a movie or shopping. I love having Beef Tongue (if' you've never had it, don't reject it! Try it!). This place has excellent food, friendly service and deserts that are incredible (rice pudding, tapioca etc). The matzoh ball soup is something that is very hard to find locally and you can order Matzoh balls as a side order. Additionally you get a takeaway cup with certain drinks.
The environment is fun. The walls are covered with lots of sayings about dining and family etc. As you wait for your order you can read the walls. Up front you can also have some of the food to go, including deserts. There is also a back page which has large meal specials for around ten dollars. Again, if you love sandwiches, deli style sandwiches or liver and onions or chicken pot pie or a big burger, this is the place to sit and hang out. Breakfast is always an option here as well.
Enjoy.

This restaurant has the best breakfast in town. We wanted to find a place that had a wide range of choices, was clean, friendly and served breakfast beyond 11am. We found it at Captain Mardens. The pancakes are good. The bacon is good. The juice is good. The coffee is refilled. They also have waffles, omlettes etc. It's good clean no frills breakfast, without any semblance of greasy spoon. Expect to leave with your belly full. The atmosphere is clean and sunny. The value is also very good. I think price wise this has the best values in the downtown area.
Its also a place that's kid friendly. I see many families there with babies through teen years. On that note, the place seems filled with folks of all ages. This truly is a family restauarant. on Mother's day they gave out flowers to mothers. It's also fun as you can see the work being done in the kitchen and it's got a counter too. There's ample parking or one can just walk ten minutes from the train or downtown shopping.
Check it out.
