Although Terra Incognito has primarily been a ceramics studio- they have recently branched out into metal smithing. I am currently in the beginners metal smithing class and have found it really fascinating. they have a wonderful studio space set up with lots of equipment I could never afford to purchase myself.
My instructor is easy going yet knowledgeable and fun. He is so willing to let us try things out ans to instruct us along the way. The class has been a pleasure. I've learned so much and plan to continue. The only problem is they don't have open studio time- at least not yet.

When I first discovered this quaint store tucked among the art galleries of Harrison street I was a total novice. I had just barley gotten my feet wet in jewelry making. Well years later I now have much more experience in this field, in part due to Bead in Hand.
Bead in Hand offers lots of classes- for beginners or experienced crafters. The class sizes are small and you get plenty of individual attention. They have a great revolving stock and there is always something new in. If you don't do the craft thing you can even pick out some beads and they will make something small for you while you wait. And don't be afraid to ask questions if you are just starting out- many of the staff members are very experienced and can handle most questions.

Yes indeedy- it is possible to be treated well at a currency exchange. The Madison Harlem exchange is the only one in town I will go to- the service is always friendly and I have never had them do anything wrong- which is a big plus when someone is dealing with your money. They have plenty of services- everything including the regular check cashing services, renewing plates, buying a Chicago city sticker, paying a wide variety of bills and providing notary services.
They charge reasonable fees and typically have lots of windows open. The hours are good and free parking is available in the back.

The name of this store tells you a lot about the merchandise- undoubtedly unique! The store is located next to the Post Office, in the garden level of an old Victorian. The garden level has been re-done into a store- with hand poured flooring and carved pillars that are works of art in themselves. Although the location might seem a bit odd, it so so worth a visit. The items in the store hail from a variety of artists- everything from paintings to sculptures to handmade cards, scarves, clothing and jewelry. The prices are reasonable considering what is being offered. I can always find a "unique" and interesting gift for a loved one.
They might seem a bit off the beaten path- not quite on "The Avenue" (oak park avenue and lake area) and not quite downtown- sort of in-between the two areas. They are right near the Frank Loyd Wright Unitarian church- so if you are in town seeing the sites make sure you cross the street from the temple and take in the wonders at this store! You may want to call ahead for hours.

First of all, the interior of Red Eye is incredibly hip- complete with tasteful 50's style pin-up pictures (gotta love that!). They have a great selection of frames, everything form the super-trendy to the stylish and even some antique pieces. The prices are listed up front so there are no surprises and they are providers for many insurance plans.
The doctor is great (one of my personal favorites! lol) and does a complete eye exam with all the trimmings (pressure check, contact lens fitting etc) for a really reasonable price, even if you are paying cash. This is truly a wonderful Chicago shop, the kind of place you visit once and come back to every year.

For years my significant other visited the Macneal Offices in Oak Park (on Lake Street) for her health care. While never unhappy with the care- she never had been sick either. A bout with some mystery illness brought her to this Dr.'s office over and over again this past winter. The care she got at this office and the overall level of concern was disgusting. Really.
Now I will not bash any individual doctor, but the physician she saw was slow (days on end, even after several ER visits) to return our calls, never could diagnosis her, never treated a single symptom and sent her to some atrocious specialists. When she was able to see the doctor or talk to her the level of care was mediocre at best. Plus I sometimes held for up to 30 minutes just waiting to schedule an appointment over the phone. None of this helped make anyone in the household healthier.
Thankfully a change in primary care physicians has my significant other feeling much better- she was sent to great specialists, properly diagnosed and her symptoms were promptly treated. What a difference a good doctor can make.

You don't have to go into the city to get wonderful care for your pet- not even in the middle of the night. A recent "drooling" incident with my beloved kitty brought us into this vets office on a recent evening- after hours of course. Yes, I did indeed say drooling. Anyway, the charge wasn't horrible(about $120 for the visit and meds) and we were treated kindly and quickly. The vet answered a TON of questions for me and was very patient with myself and the drooler. Overall, a positive experience, despite the spittle.

With Chicago directly to our East and only a green line ride away you might not expect that there is Sushi worth eating in the burbs. Well set your expectations hip because this place will meet them! The setting is intimate (perhaps even a little tightly fitted), but it's worth it! The sushi is fresh and delicious and there is a great selection. Even the non-sushi lovers among us were able to find something delicious to eat. Plus, they deliver!

This is absolutely my favorite store for gifts, trinkets jewelry and any fun unique items. They have great artists and frequent clearances and sales. One half of the store is household type decorations and the other half is filled with beautiful clothing (no plus sizes though). they frequently have new merchandise and ALWAYS have something interesting and beautiful. If you are in Oak Park you simply MUST visit this store.
