Lindsey Gallery has, in my opinion, one of the best collections of artistic jewelry in Oak Park. They offer pieces from a diverse array of artists (local and international artists). Although at times the prices seem quite high to me, some of the pieces seem to be worth the higher price since they are mostly hand crafted and original. The Gallery also has a variety of decorative items and is even featuring a dollar table. Parking is easiest on North Blvd, just near the El.

Scratch N Sniff could very well be one of my favorite stores. Although the name makes it sound as if it is only items for pets- it certainly isn't. Don't get me wrong, they have plenty of really fun stuff for your dog or cat- including toys, leashes, dishes and little doggy clothing. However, I also redecorated my bathroom in a nifty "sushi" theme using a shower curtain and accessories I picked up at Scratch N Sniff.

This charming little store is tucked in the edge of the pedestrian mall off Lake Street in downtown Oak Park. Although a much better known chain store is just around the corner from Fitzgerald's, Fitzgerald's has a slightly different selection from the stores around it. They offer personalized attention for special orders and have a section set aside where you can browse stationary or invites for personalizing. The price is mid-range, and they have a really hip and frequently changing selection of stationary and stationary sets.

I have taken several art classes from the Park District of Oak Park and have enjoyed them all. Although the current fall schedule (2005) seems to be a bit light on the art offerings, what they do have is well worth the time and money. If you have ever wanted to take ceramics, for example, you will find that the Park Districts price is much lower then local art studios or colleges. The cost of the class also includes open studio time and materials. the instructors are fairly good- although they don't offer too much guidance and then don't assign projects. So if you like working independently you will enjoy the atmosphere.

Yes kids you read the sign right- it's GAYmart...located in the center of boystown right on Halstead (where on earth else would it be??). Even if you aren't playing for "that team" Gaymart is worth a visit. It is an extremely fun store- full of witty t-shirts, great cards, unique home decor items, collectibles (think Wizard of Oz, Lucille Ball or Queer as Folk) and the healthy helping of everything you can imagine in rainbow colors. So if your "here and queer", shopping for the beloved homo in your life or simply sight seeing you shouldn't miss this shop. And if you buy something make sure you tell people you bought it at "gaymart" and enjoy the quizzical looks you get!

Not only does Kopi have very cool window seating where you get to cop a squat on cushions on the floor, they also have great coffee and a good selection of tea. The atmosphere is relaxed in this Andersonville hang out- it's a great place to read or study or chat with friends. My favorite part of the cafe, however, is the store in the back. They feature items from all over the world such as books, clothing, jewelry and other decorative items. The prices are reasonable and it usually isn't terribly crowded, although those window seats are hard to come by most days!!

I must admit- I can't always afford to purchase the items I fall in love with in this store- but there is always something I like. they have mostly decorative items for the household or to give as gifts. there is a great selection of artistic jewelry and fragrances for the home. I simply love the ornaments at Christmas time and the beautiful handmade throws they have. The have many items I can afford- but they also have some pricey pieces and some small pieces of furniture. I dare you to walk by the window of this store and not go in=) Parking can be a problem on Lake street, so make sure you look for one of the nearby lots and walk the block or so.

This store has one of the best raw herb selections I have seen in the Chicago area. The prices on bulk herbs are very reasonable, and the staff is knowledgeable on use and preparation of the herbs. Their selection of health foods and supplements is good, although they are a bit on the pricey side. They also have an excellent selection of containers, so if you are making your own lip balm or soap- pay them a visit! Besides the selection the best thing about this store is the personal, caring attention from staff- you won't get this sort of attention at a large chain.

When I first moved into the suburbs I tried many Chinese restaurants and often cried "is there no szechwan in this town? I can't believe we're eating Cantonese". Well I have indeed found wonderful Szechwan- at Szechwan Beijing. Their menu also includes Mandarin and Cantonese styles- and everything I have had here has been fresh and delicious. They have lunch time specials at a great price and a Sunday brunch buffet. There are a few dishes that are a bit pricey, but the cost is reasonable. The are located right off the last green-line el stop, plus they deliver. The Mongolian beef is one of my very favorite dishes- chocked full of fresh mushrooms- yum!

I have been a long-time fan of this aptly named bakery/sweet shop. Creative treats such as the "1000 chip cake" and the amazing Berry layer cake simply can't be beat, especially in Andersonville. I have never had anything bad here- and trust me, I've tried it all! The atmosphere is comfortable- although often busy. Order ahead for a whole cake or a custom goodie. The price of a piece of cake might a bit pricey at first- but one serving could easily please 2 individuals.
