If you don't mind participating in making your own food, or if you fancy yourself an amazing chef, you will enjoy a visit to Flat Top Grill. This is a 'mix your own' kinda place where you choose the veggies, meats, sauce etc and it gets cooked on a large flat top grill, but of course. There are plenty of recommendations in case you are confused or uninspired. The food is all-you-can eat and the price is reasonable. This place is also great if you are watching what you eat in anyway- they list calorie, fat carb contents on a big board.

If you are looking for a cozy place to enjoy a good cup of coffee Buzz Cafe is it in Oak Park. A locally owned and operated cafe, it's a nice change of pace from the local chains. They feature sandwiches and soup and of course a wide array of specialty coffees and teas. The cafe decorated with art from locals (most of which can be purchased) and often they have local performs as well. This is a great place to meet a friend for a quick bite or just chill out and read a book.

On every visit to Papspiros I have been very pleased with the quality of the food and the 'Greek island' atmosphere. The food is extremely authentic and at any given time you may be greeted by the owner, his wife or a family member- adding to the authentic atmosphere. If you never have had saganaki (flaming Greek cheese) this is a must try- just for the umpah you get when the waiter serves it. The prices are moderate, expect to pay $10-15 an entrée. Valet is available for $4, in case you can't find decent street parking.

I have been wholly unimpressed with the taste and quality of the ice cream from Oberweiss ice cream shops. Their milk is a local favorite and is always remarkably fresh and delicious. The same can not be said for the ice cream, however. The ice cream is bland and the flavors or ordinary. Additionally, any treat in an Oberweiss store is outrageously expensive.

I stayed at the Hotel Metro this summer as part of a mini getaway. The Hotel Metro is beautiful, conviently located and the rooms are amazing- complete with whirlpool bath and exquisite beds. However, we didn't get much rest during our stay. The street below our room seemed to be on the route to Water Street, and therefore college kid party central. Request a room off the street if you stay, and your trip will be more enjoyable- otherwise if you don't want to be kept away by street noise stay elsewhere.

Located in the Harrison Art District, Buzz Cafe fits right into the neighborhood surrounding it. The cafe provides one of the only places in the area where you can grab a cup of joe, kick back and relax. The coffee is good and average price for what it is. They also feature local art on the wall which is available for sale.

Pronto Roma is a great place to go for tasty pasta, sandwiches and gellato in the Oak Park/River Forest area. The atmosphere is comfortable- and usually the place isn't too crowded. On a Friday night you might find families, couples, and singles all enjoying a meal. Their pizza isn't the best in Chicago, but the 4 cheese pizza is tasty if you are adventurous. I also highly recommend the porcini mushroom pasta or the chopped salad. At times the service here can be sort of sketchy- sometimes good sometimes poor. They offer delivery, but when we have ordered they have delivered the wrong items 4 out of 5 times.
