Mahoney's is one of the best places in the area to go for all your garden needs. When we first got our community garden plot and asked about garden centers, everyone, and I mean everyone, said, "Go to Mahoney's!" The selection cannot be beat and a knowledgeable staff makes shopping easy and pleasant. Now I am the one recommending Mahoney’s to others all the time. Forget about going to chain stores, where the staff is not as well trained in gardening needs. Take the time to visit this shop, as they can really help you.

This little bookstore, near Downtown Crossing, is a great place to spend some time browsing and poking through their great selection of used and antique books. I always get sucked in by their $1 rack, which is up on street level. The selection on the $1 shelves is constantly changing, and I have found some great gems there.
From the street, you walk down to the basement level and enter the little shop. It is floor to ceiling books! They have a nice selection of children’s books, and tons more. I tend to spend at least a half hour each time, browsing around and inhaling that gorgeous old book smell. They have beautiful antique books behind the counter.
Next time you’re in DTC check it out!

I love JP Licks and I don’t even like ice cream that much! They have the freshest, yummiest ice cream in Boston, however, and the funkiest flavors! Some of the flavors are kind of odd (virgin bloody mary, for example) but some are just amazing. This is one of my daughter’s favorite places for a quick treat. The shop is very child friendly, and decorated with crazy cows everywhere. The prices are average, not too expensive.
I only wish they had more ice creams (sorbets, I guess) without dairy. They have a small sorbet selection, but it is occasionally rather boring. Since I am lactose intolerant, I can only eat child’s size cone without feeling ill.
In general though, it is a great place on a hot summer day! The ever changing ice cream flavors will keep you entertained for a long time.

This is one of my favorite places in Jamaica Plain to window-shop, or pop into while I am in line for the Center Street Café. It is a kitchen and house wares store with the coolest products! Things are tucked away everywhere in this store, and while it is small; it is bursting at the seams with fun stuff. The prices are completely reasonable for arty home and kitchenware, and they have frequent sales. It’s a fun place to browse around and a great place to buy gifts!

I recently brought my car here to get my tires balanced and am really disappointed! First of all, they didn’t do a very good job with the alignment and balancing. It’s only been 2 months and I already need to get my tires realigned. Second of all, they filled my tired far too much. They were at the maximum pressure and I had no idea until this past weekend. Had I hit a pothole or curb too hard, they could have just popped! The price wasn’t great and the service was awful. I really do not recommend this place.

Broad Street Variety is a great little shop near State Street in Boston. It’s just a little mom & pop type store, with a small, but useful amount of products. They have a great selection of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Coffee, as well as sodas, chips, and other snacks.
The reason I choose to go here, rather than one of the larger stores around, is that the owners and staff are just fantastic. They are very friendly, and always welcoming. The prices at the shop are better than average for the area (Pepsi, for example is currently 2 for $1).
If you are near State Street it may be worth the extra block for you to walk to this great little shop.

Video Underground is a great little shop in the Hyde Square area of Jamaica Plain. While it is a rather small store, they have a really impressive array of video and dvds to rent. The focus is on indy and foreign films, although they do occasionally get new releases.
The staff is amazing; they really know their stuff. I have never gone wrong with a staff recommendation. They are very knowledgeable about movie, and if they don’t have the answer you need, a collection of books on movies should be able to help you.
They have a frequent renters card, as well as specials (rent 1, get 1 free). Their rental prices are good, and the best part is they have access to movies that are REALLY hard to find sometimes. It’s just a fantastic place to get your movie rentals.

This tiny little shop on Boylston Street is a popular place for a quick cup of coffee, a sandwich, or basics such as tofu and tempeh. They have a small produce section, a small drink and dairy case, and few aisles of canned/boxed goods.
The best part of the shop is their sandwiches. The make a great selection of freshly made vegan sandwiches (try the fake BLT-yummmm), as well as ones for our carnivorous friends.
The staff is great, very friendly and helpful. The community message board is a wonderful resource, with job, apartment and for sale posting. There are comfy couches too, in case you want to stay a while.

Petal & Leaf is very conveniently located in Jamaica Plain, on Centre Street. It is a beautiful shop, with gorgeous fresh flowers and very tasteful and often elegant arrangements. Unfortunately, the prices are very high. It’s a great florist if you really want to impress a date, but for day-to-day needs it is a bit pricey. They have a great selection of cut flowers and potted flowers to choose from, as well as bouquets. I will occasionally buy one or two Gerber daisies there, but other than that it is completely out of my price range.

Way back in the day, when I was 18 and living in Boston for the first time, Dollar a Pound at the Garment District was the place to shop for your punk rock needs. Now that I am older I still enjoy going, because you never know what you’ll find in the heaps of clothes. It’s a great place to get things for restructuring, and fixing up. And like a previous reviewer noted, it is a great place to get your Halloween costume! The thrift store (The Garment District), has fantastic clothes that are the cream of the crop. It is worth a visit!
