When you walk into Enchantments you first notice the gorgeous incense small, the sparkly confetti on the floor and the soothing music in the background. You have entered a different world! This shop has two floors and innumerable rooms of products, from books, to gifts, to clothes, to home decor and jewelry. The focus is on magical things and there are fairies, gnomes and dragons all around you.
Upstairs are clothes and other accessories. You'll find the perfect dress for a medieval faire here. There are also great everyday clothes, beautiful dresses and shirts. Downstairs are books, CDs, herbs, candles, incense, and gorgeous jewelry for every taste. My favorite budget treat is the grab bags...they usually cost $2-5, and are always a pleasant treat. this is one of the few shop in the area you can buy body jewelry at, and they have a great selection.
This store, when it first opened, was just a few small rooms. Over the years it has expanded and become a gorgeous treat. You can spend a whole day there and not see everything. children are welcome, but must be supervised closely. If you find yourself in the area, be sure to stop in. The staff is warm and welcoming, and are wonderful people!

So…you’re looking for an obscure recording of some punk rock band that no one has heard of? Or you’re a DJ, looking for some used vinyl to spin? Or perhaps you are on a budget and looking for some great, used CDs. Never fear, Bull Moose is here!
This is, in my opinion, the best place in Portland to buy music. They have a great, ever-changing selection of used and new CDs. They are wonderful about doing special orders. They have hard to find bands and boxed sets that you wouldn’t believe!
I love the Freakin’ Shoppers card. You earn points for every dollar you spend, which can be applied for discounts later. It’s great. They also have a great board of all the local shows coming up, and a cool zine/magazine section.
It’s funky, it’s gritty and it’s a great store.

Siempre Mas is one of my favorite clothing stores in Portland’s Old Port. I’ve listed them under women’s clothes, but they have clothes for everyone. It’s my favorite place to buy cute little batik clothes for my nephew and daughter. The clothes are just gorgeous, very brightly colored and mostly all cotton and natural fabrics. They also sell a wide variety of home décor: curtains, sarongs and the like.
Everyone at Siempre Mas is very kind, and their sales are just super. Be sure to check out their clearance store around the corner on Exchange Street too! The prices can be a bit high, but the clothes last for years. The children’s clothes are an especially good value, because they are cut well and are roomy, so kids can wear them for a long time.
It’s a great store if you are looking for beautiful, imported clothes.

Without a doubt Videoport is my favorite video store in the world. It eclipses Video Underground in Jamaica Plain, MA. I like it better than any little indy store in New York. I love Videoport because of many things.
First, the staff. They are amazing. They will give you advice for movie to watch that are always completely spot on. I think you have to be psychic to work here. Second, the selection. It is mind numbing. You could watch a movie every day for 3 years and not see all of them. I’m sure of it. They have the best selection of cult classics I have seen in the Northeast, and just about everything you can think of is here.
The store used to deliver locally. This was a big bonus for me!
All in all I have to say this store rocks!! Even though I live in Boston, I still occasionally rent movies here on my way to my mom’s house and then return them on the way back to Boston.

This store is filled with flying, spinning, bright and colorful kites and wind toys that are just begging to be bought! If you are looking for a kite, this is the place to go. They have kites for everyone, from the smallest beginner, to master/competitive flyers.
They also carry a great selection of juggling supplies, as well as whirly-gigs and so much more. The toys here are for all ages, but adults always get a big thrill when entering. There is nothing like a new kite to make you feel young again.
The staff here really know what they are talking about when you ask them advice and can recommend the perfect products for your needs. During the summer they can be seen flying huge kites near the lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth.
It’s a gorgeous store, as close to a toy store for grown-ups as you’ll ever get!

Treehouse Toys is one of my daughter’s favorite toy stores in Portland. I feel like I write a lot of reviews of toy stores! I guess it is because I spend so much time (and money) in them.
Treehouse has a great variety of toys. Their Playmobil section is especially good, and they have been very helpful with special orders of Playmobil goodies. They have it all! They also have toys out everywhere, so you can try them and cuddle them and play with them before you buy.
There are toys here for all income levels, from the richest, most doting grandparents, to the youngest shopper with a fistful of change. It’s truly a great store to visit with kids!

Pearl River is a huge Chinese imports store in the heart of SoHo. It’s fantastic. They have three floors of house wares, clothes, shoes, accessories, paper goods, bath products, and food…just to name a bit! It is a great place for Christmas shopping, or anytime you need nice gifts for a reasonable price. You can easily find a lovely saki set or tea set for under $25.
The bargains are plentiful here. Chopsticks, really lovely ones, for under $2.50. All the really fun decorations for Chinese New Year for very little money. You can get lovely Bee & Flower soap (sandalwood is my favorite) for about $1.
The food is where it gets fun. You can get a gorgeous tin of tea for $2.50. You can also find great noodles, candies and often a lot of unidentifiable products.
The store itself is beautiful. It’s very open and light-filled. There are three floors, so nothing feels to crowded. Everything is presented really nicely, and the shopping experience here is just plain fun!

This little store on Exchange Street is one of the best places to get your book fix in Portland. The have a few rooms of books, with great small publisher books mixed in with larger run books. Scattered throughout the shop are staff comment cards, with thoughtful and provoking reviews of the books by the people who work with them on a daily basis.
Their magazine section is quite good, and they carry magazines that are often hard to find in a small city like Portland. They also have a small section of used books, which are often surprisingly like new. Books, Etc. has a great variety of books separated into topics, often with a very progressive bent.
The staff is amazing, very warm and welcoming. They really know their books too, and can help you find that perfect summer read. I highly recommend a visit, if you’re in the neighborhood.

When you first walk into Kate’s Paperie you are immediately struck by the beautiful, elegant, and classy products displayed everywhere. On the wall to your left are sheets and sheets of gorgeous handmade papers. On the shelves to your right are hand bound books, diaries, office supplies and more. As you walk through the store you discover more and more. Stationary by the sheet in gorgeous colors! A small, but funky collection of rubber stamps! This place is a paper crafters dream.
The sheets of paper are my favorite. You say you’d like hand-screened paper from India? They’ve got it, in four colors! Handmade paper with rose petal inclusions? They’ve got that too. From floor to ceiling, sheets of paper are gorgeously displayed.
It’s also a great place to buy upscale gifts. They have a nice selection of fountain pens, great little address books and diaries, and other paper items. They gift-wrap as well, and do a beautiful job.
Kate’s can be on the pricey side, but is worth every penny! The staff is knowledgeable about everything paper, and can help you pick out the perfect gift. I love this store, and it was always one of my favorite places to shop when I lived in New York. If you love paper, check this shop out.
