Wabanna sits on the water in Edgewater, MD. It is a Christian camp that meets the needs and interests of all ages, children to adults. They have an unusual item called the Giant Swing. It requires a person to be strapped into a harness and to wear a helmet. The person is then hoisted into the air by persons on the ground who pull the cables. At the desired height, the harnessed person pulls a cord which send them sailing through the air on what is truly a giant swing.
There are many places on the grounds of Wabanna to find some quiet space where you can reflect on all of God's creation and the amazing array of life He created around us all.
The camp also offers swimming in a pool or in the bay. The camp is open to local church groups. We used the camp for a summer picnic and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Patuxent Nursery occasionally has really good deals on some plants. In the spring, they have a great deal on impatiens and other summer flowering plants - I think it was $1.25 for a pack of 6 small plants. This can make things confusing later, though. I went back a couple months later and thought I found another great deal - 18 plants for only a couple of dollars. I was wrong. Read the fine print on the signs before buying. I ended up returning to the shelves a whole tray of beautiful plants.
They also have a good variety of stones and pavers for landscaping.

Kay (Karneese) Childress has got to be one of the most easy-to-use realtors in the area. By the time we met her, we had already gone through three other realtors who were absolutely awful! I had a house picked out and just needed someone to help me go for a tour. I called Coldwell Banker out of desperation (we had been using a referral service before) and Kay just happened to be the one who answered the phone. I explained that I wanted a realtor who was patient, who could provide lots of information for a first-time homebuyer, who wouldn't try to switch my mortgage company (*a previous realtor had tried that), and who would show me the house I had already picked out online.
Kay was wonderful, polite, no-pressure, worked around our schedules, helped us to move on the home we wanted immediately (while my son climbed all over her office) and helped to get an absolutely great deal on the home we wanted.

The Atlantic Title Company is a pleasure to use for real estate closings. The office is located in downtown Annapolis, which means there's not much parking available, but the staff at the office were a pleasure to have during settlement on our first home purchase. Jeffrey Bald was very professional and good-natured. He moved all of our work along smoothly. He seemed to know the area well and clearly understood and explained what needed to be done in order to file all paperwork correctly, right down to using the correct color of pen ink.
We will very likely use this office should we ever need their services again.

The University of Maryland has a broad range of degrees available, as is expected of a public, state university. It has one of the most satisfying recreation centers, with several indoor and outdoor pools, basketball courts, free weights, nautilus, treadmills, and more. The campus rolls with the hills it's built on and provides a beautiful oasis from the city-feel that surrounds it. It is mainly a commuter school, though, as there are not enough dorms for the students. There is an on-campus organization devoted to meet commuter-students' needs: Commuter Affairs and Community Services. They provide information on how to find apartments/rooms to rent in the area and how best to get around. There is also a bus service that allows all Maryland students to use their student cards to get around town for free.

Homestead Gardens is a beautiful place to visit even if you don't need to buy any plants. They have the most beautiful selection. We first visited last fall and even though I was visiting just to get ideas, I ended up buying these deep crimson mums. They were enormous and not too expensive. Homestead Gardens also does the neat little programs for kids with trains and pumpkins and whatnot. They also have a landscaping division if you need help designing and figuring out what to do with your yard.
They also have a little "club" with the plastic card for your wallet so you get the "special" rates for buying your plants. One catch, you have to buy at least one thing every year in order to keep you in good standing.

We found out about Drs. Brinster and Kimmel from friends of ours and have used them since we moved to the area. The office is child-friendly: I always have both kids with me and they sit by my side either in their stroller or on the chairs while I have my teeth cleaned. The receptionists and dental staff are very friendly toward children; they give the kids balloons and let them press the buttons for the water and spittoon/sink.
We have also talked with their orthodontic staff and received intelligent answers to questions with low-pressure ideas on how to fix our teeth.
It's a good group to visit.

Famous Dave's used to be a stand-by of ours for dining out. We frequented the Dave's in Fairfax, VA, and once we moved to Annapolis we were delighted to find one off West St. This Annapolis area Dave's isn't as good as the Fairfax one, though.
We've tried dining-in and carrying-out at the Annapolis restaurant, and carrying-out was definitely the better way to go. The meal was served hot, service was pleasant (all you have to do is pay the cashier) and time spent waiting for the meal was relatively minimal. However, when we ate at the restaurant, we had the same number of persons eating with us, but the service and wait were significantly less acceptable. In fact, we ended up with a poor experience as far as service goes for the dining-in. My advice: go ahead and order on the phone, pick it up and eat at home.
It's not a particularly kid-friendly place, either. We have two little ones - they ended up walking around the outside of the restaurant while we waited.
On the up side, the Bar-B-Que was delicious. :)

I will always think of Chick-Fil-A first when looking for a place to eat because of the experience I had while at the Chick-fil-A Capital Centre FSU. It's very simple and many would probably just brush it off, but given the world today, it made an impact. It's very simply this: only a month or two after having our daughter, we were travelling around the D.C. area and I was famished! Having to nurse a baby takes a lot out of you and I was particularly hungry. We pulled off to the Cap Center shopping area and found the Chick-Fil-A. We already like to support Chick-Fil-A because of its association with Christian organizations. The only problem we had is that Chick-Fil-A, or at least this particular one, does not accept credit cards and I had a grand total of $3 on me. So I stood at in front of the menu, trying to find the best way to spend my $3 on something grilled, not fried. The cashier noticed how I was debating. I finally settled on a grilled chicken sandwich with a small drink. The cashier asked if I wanted a combo meal, but I explained that I had only $3 on me. She put together my bag and just before handing it to me, asked if I wanted fries. I said "yes, but I don't have any more cash for them." She said it's alright and included it in the meal for me.
It was a very small and simple thing to do and I'm sure it really didn't cost Chick-Fil-A much, but I am always grateful for folks who go out of their way to help others. And the woman cashier at this Chick-Fil-A helped me.
I will definitely go back to eat there again and again.

Lawson's Tree Experts were used at our home in spring of 2004 to handle a large mangle of trees that were toppling toward our home. We had three trees that were working like dominos, one knocking over the other, with the last one tipping toward our guest room window. These were very large trees, oak and poplar, that needed to be taken down immediately. We found Lawson's in the phone book and gave them a try; that was on a Friday evening. One of their representatives came by that same evening to our home to take a look at the situation. He set up a crew that came out a little after 8 o'clock the next morning.
We were expecting to have to pay for large equipment to be brought in for stabilizing the trees while they were cut into chunks, however the Lawson men were able to bring all three trees down without using any large equipment. It was just a few men, some ropes and chainsaws. We were very thankful for their service - we had heard the tree nearest the house snapping the night before and were just holding our breaths until the Lawson men arrived.
This is a good group to call for projects that are complex and require immediate assistance.
