This is where we’ve played almost every Sunday morning for the past 20+ years. Pretty well maintained, plenty of courts which are generally accessible (in 2009) and available, views of the mountains, open sky, breathing room. Our tax dollars go toward the upkeep of these courts and I am happy they are available for our use on Sundays

Pretty low prices, healthful food, friendly clerks and checkers, within walking distance from my home, ample parking if you do drive (no fights for parking spaces at this location): Yes, in 2009, I do shop here – normally on Sundays in the late afternoon. I recently went in search of ingredients for Asparagus and Cilantro soup (Real Food Daily Cookbook, p. 74) and found almost everything I needed here.

An update to my 12/29/06 review:
Whole Foods is still my favorite market, but these days, I find myself shopping there only about twice per week, as compared to my previous almost daily visits. This is due, of course, to the economy, but also to my renewed and revitalized “less is more” philosophy of life.
I must also note that the self-check lines which I highly praised in my 12/29/06 review have been non-operational for at least the past 6 months, much to my regret. However, in the past few weeks, as I have stood awaiting the human checker, I have eyed the two (2) not quite yet operational revamped self-check stations and I know the day is near when I, once again, will become the master of checking and bagging my own groceries at Whole Foods Market.

I have been visiting the Palace of the Legion of Honor quite a lot lately on my visits to SF. I love its setting and architecture. I feel I AM visiting a palace. Of the collection, I like most to see the permanent collection of Rodin sculpture - in particular - the miniature hand and foot studies which you just know must have been done by Camille Claudel, although there is no attribution that I am aware of. That's my thought - perhaps it is not accurate. In any case, I like to think they are Claudel studies. They are beautiful. There is also a small head of Camille by Rodin which is very fragile and lovely. I contemplate its countenance while the sun streams through the skylight overhead - a study in quietness.
I absolutely love the red chairs in the spacious, airy, acoustically friendly cafe/cafeteria. It's so wonderful! I dream about sipping coffee while sitting in this wonderful light, airy room, looking at these delightful red wooden chairs and gazing out through the great windows to the green landscapes beyond! So, so splendid an experience! The bookstore is also pretty good. I've made some unusual finds here. One book comes to mind: "On Beauty and Being Just", by Elaine Scarry,

My husband and I had a very late lunch/early dinner at the Park Chalet on a Friday night in early May which we very much enjoyed. http://beachchalet.com/aboutus/index.php?page=parkchalet We arrived around 4:00 p.m. and found the atmosphere relaxed and the service attentive and friendly. The restaurant is located on the Great Highway at the entrance to Golden Gate Park (next to the windmill) and behind the Visitor Center. You will pass through the Center's wonderful display of SF themed WPA walls murals on your way to the Park Chalet entrance. http://www.lightight.com/GGP/mem_images/Mem1P01.html
While seating can be had in or out of doors, we sat inside and our table looked out onto a green garden (park) planted with golden California poppies and studded with bright, yellow Adirondack chairs. I ordered the fish & chips which I usually don't order, but found excellent - very lite. My husband ordered the linguine and mussels and was very happy with it, saying that it was the best shell fish he ever had - very lite - not oily or fishy. We also ordered the root beer (something else I don't usually order) which is a house specialty - this being a brewery. The prices were reasonable and the experience was relaxing and very pleasant.
After dinner we took a walk through Golden Gate Park, visited the newly refurbished De Young Museum, http://www.thinker.org/deyoung attended a free serendipitous sitar concert at the museum, took the elevator to the 9th floor for a spectacular 360 degree view of the city, took a long leisurely stroll back through the park and emerged 3 hours later at the Park Chalet Restaurant and the Visitor Center.
What a nice time! How can you have a better experience?

but it may be found here: California Traditional Music Society (CTMS) http://www.ctmsfolkmusic.org, whose goal is to "preserve and disseminate traditional Folk Music, dance and related folk arts of America's diverse cultural heritage by broadening public involvement with Folk Music," according to their mission statement. Located in Encino (Encino Park, 16953 Ventura Blvd., Encino, California 91316) CTMS holds classes, house concerts, hosts an annual Summer Solstice Festival every June and much, much more.
An alternative for the self learner might be found online: Lark in the Morning (a world of music since 1974), http://www.larkinam.com/default.asp. In addition to purchasing unusual musical instruments, one can also browse and/or purchase instructional information via books, videos, dvd's, etc.
I have ordered from Lark in the Morning and have found them to be a wonderful musical source while providing good service. I have also attended weekends of musical workshops, dancing (Contra and English Country) & Celtic concerts offered through CTMS' Summer Solstice Festival when it was held in Calabassas which I enjoyed and recommend to those having an interest.
Another possible avenue: Old Town Music, 42 East Colorado, Pasadena, 91105; Website: http://www.oldtownmusic.com/ Email: info@oldtownmusic.com; Phone (626) 793-4730. I have not yet considered this avenue, however, as to concertina concerns.

It's a winter's day, in a deep and dark December [or January]. You've been at work too many hours, between four walls, too many days. You feel the need to breathe fresh air, to see sun, to see moon, to see sky, to feel wind, to see dogs frolic freely! You need open space! Where are you going to go?
Now, in Pasadena, since May, 2006, there is an Answer: the Alice Frost Kennedy Off-Leash Dog area at Vina Vieja Park at 3026 East Orange Grove Blvd., where big & little dogs abound from dawn to dusk. Is there any greater delight than watching these dogs at play? I take my dog here to meet and greet the neighborhood's best & I have been astonished to find that my previously quasi-anti-social, very protective pup has become a most cordial and amiable animal, rubbing noses with the best of them.
According to the Pasadena Humane Society website http://www.phsspca.org. visiting dogs absolutely must to have a current license and be up-to-date on their vaccines in order to socialize. Otherwise, they are relegated to watch from outside the 6 foot chain link fence which surrounds the 2.5 acre grass surface area designated for separate large and small dog needs. The park affords water stations for dogs, as well a people, and poop bag dispensers, trees, benches, small mounds and two recycled fire hydrants. While dog owners must clean up after their dogs, the park is maintained by the City of Pasadena for grass maintenance, daily trash removal, lawn upkeep, and poop bag refilling.
Even on days/nights when my dog isn't with me, I thoroughly enjoy the park, watching the dogs play freely, meeting other dog owners, as well as getting a spectacular, unobstructed view of the San Gabriel Mt. range to the north. When I heard that a dog park was coming to my area, never previously liking dog parks and their regulations, I was skeptical. I must say that I have been won over. The Alice Frost Kennedy Off-Leash Dog Park is truly a welcomed addition to my neighborhood.

As I was waiting in line, humming "Brian Boru's March" and waiting for my "Ordinario" sandwich (roast turkey, lettuce, tomato, cucumber (no cheese) on marble rye) the other day, I thought, "Why not review Whole Foods Market? I'm here almost every day." And so . . .
Whole Foods IS a pleasant and very convenient shopping experience - although more expensive than your average market. It is an organic/natural foods/gourmet market which meets almost every shopping need. The take-out service is pretty fast - but better yet - the self service check-out lines are the best I have encountered at any shopping facility, almost never break down (as long as I am using a debt card) & I am in and out very quickly. I trust the food I buy here & I feel I can safely eat here without getting sick. I frequent the fresh fruits & vegetables and salad and soup {Mediterranean Chicken is my favorite) bars.
My weekly need for fresh cut flowers is met here as well as my desire to look at Earth Shoes (they sell the new Earth Shoe), buy ear plugs, purchase vitamins, minerals and supplements, Bach flower remedies, Republic of Tea teas + freshly delivered (if not baked) Irish Soda bread. And, it is all within walking distance from my house or a short driving distance from my work.
I am very spoiled, very rarely shop at other markets for edible products (except Trader Joe's) since discovering Whole Foods and when I am on vacation or away from home, I find myself trying to locate the nearest Whole Foods Market to me. For, what is life without whole food?

After visiting Green Apple Bookstore, I pay a visit to Toy Boat. Newly purchased books in hand, I delve into my books over a real china mug/cup of café mocha & a muffin or piece of freshly baked bread. This is a good place to visit on a cold day. Again, for me, it provides that Clement Street nostalgia and my husband, my sister (SF dweller) and I get a kick out of looking at all the vintage toys which line the shelves and counters. That's the real draw: you can never have enough vintage ''60's troll dolls with purple hair and Bob's Big Boy dolls!

My husband and I have been taking our dog to Blue Ribbon Grooming on Foothill for the past 10 years since that fateful night she was sprayed by a skunk. We almost immediately developed a good relationship with the owners. They are consistent, do good work and welcome our dog with open arms. Our dog never leaves Blue Ribbon after her bath w/o a nice new ribbon and flea & tick protection. We appreciate the closeness to our home & the fact that Blue Ribbon offers a dental hygiene/teeth cleaning service on a monthly basis at a low cost w/o anesthesia. We feel confident in recommending Blue Ribbon Dog Grooming to anyone.
