I've known Shelli Martin for years and once I started working downtown, I decided to start letting her cut my hair. That's how I got my introduction to 7 which is apparently one of the hottest salons in town. I find this both intriguing and intimidating. It has a very different atmosphere than other salons. It is very busy, with about 10-15 stylists working at any given moment. It also plays very loud music, but in my opinion it is good music so that is a plus. Their philosophy is to give you a cut that works with your face. I was actually told not to bring pictures, because they want to give me a cut that looks good on me, not on someone else. Shelli has always taken the time to chat with me not only about what I want my hair to look like, but what will work best with my features and lifestyle. And that is not just a special bonus to knowing her personally...I've seen her give the same treatment to many other customers. Shelli has many years of experience and has studied in style-meccas like Paris. She helps me to be fashionable and current but in a way that works for me. I'm super-confident in both her judgment and skills. She changed the side I part my hair on, gave me bangs and showed me how to get my hair to have a great wave on its own. So I definitely recommend 7 and especially Shelli Martin if you are in the market for a big change and want someone you can trust. 7 is very expensive (about $95 after tip), so I have to limit my visits, but it has always been worth the splurge.

I just got back from my first visit to Etherea Salon and I am very pleased. I have been going to 7 (the downtown location) for my past 3 haircuts, but decided to try something new. I'm not really a risk-taker when it comes to my hair, but I got an offer I couldn't refuse: free haircut with color. So I took them up on it and I am very glad I did. The receptionist hooked me up with Caela (pronounced Kay-la) and she did a great job with my cut (I was too nervous to go for color too). She only took about an inch off my hair, which was her suggestion and I thought that was very interesting. Most stylists want to cut at least 4 inches when I come in. She added lots of layers and made my hair look 100% better without cutting it all off, which shows talent. The salon itself was nice, although it is undergoing some needed remodeling. Best of all, it is an Aveda salon, which I feel are some of the best haircare products available. This salon doesn't have the hype of some others in town, but you save $$$ due to their reasonable pricing and don't sacrifice much in doing that. There was a quick mix-up when I was at the register (it seems the receptionist I spoke with on the phone didn't make a note that I was getting a free cut) but the guy up front was quick to get everything settled without making me feel weird. I find it hard to believe the negative review posted on this site, because the customer service I received was top-notch. Bottom line: I'll still go to 7 maybe once or twice a year, but for maintenance and a basic cut that is not so basic, Caela at Etherea has definitely earned my business.

Gordon Biersch surprised me all 3 times I've been there. It has a really wide selection of food, which is great for vegetarians like myself (check out the hummus salad). My husband loved his steak there as well, in addition to the usual burgers etc. It also has quite a bit of seating, so they get you in really fast, even if you have more than 4 people, which is rare for downtown. Add to that great beer, nice servers and proximity to the downtown movie theaters and you've got a winner.

Sometimes I don't think it was coincidental that I moved to Bellevue right in time for the grand opening of this store. I've been a lushie for years, but I used to have to go to Canada or pay some serious shipping fees to get my fix. Since the summer of '05 LUSH has been happily housed in the Bellevue Square Mall and I recommend their products without hesitation. Here's some reasons why:
1. Fresh, safe ingredients. They amount of preservatives and and harmful chemicals in some beauty products is insane. Feel free to slather on anything you get from LUSH. It won't hurt you.
2. Fun products! Fizzy bath bombs, massage bars, amazingly scented soap, etc. You might have seen these elsewhere, but at LUSH they are not your average products.
3. Efficacy: LUSH products work. In the beauty world, it is hard to find products that make good on their promises. I especially recommend the BioFresh line. These masks are my lifesavers during skin emergencies!
I always do a lot of my holiday shopping here, because so many people I know have fallen in love with these products. Hopefully they'll move into a bigger space soon!

Palomino on 5th Avenue in Seattle!
Great ambiance, good service, easy parking and nice deals on food and beverages. For example: house margaritas, beer on tap and house wine for $2.99, 1/2 off appetizers and thin-crust pizzas for only $4.99. I go there all the time after work and it has yet to disappoint. Try it out next time you are downtown between 4-6 and see what I mean.
