I was lucky enough to be at UW for both undergrad and master's and although living in the U-district that long was maddening, the Thaiger Room kept me very happy. There could be better Thai food out there...if so, I've never had it. The Drunken Noodles (aka Pad Kee Mao) are blow-your-mind amazing. Their cooks have a way of keeping the veggies crunchy while the noodles are covered in a delicious sauce. The Golden Noodles are also a favorite, because it is surprisingly hard to find a noodles, veggies and peanut sauce combo at most restaurants. Their peanut sauce is fantastic by the way. My husband is hooked on their Cashew Chicken and both of us agree that the serve the best Pad Thai around. And try the spring rolls! Lightly fried and served with a lovely (not syrupy) plum sauce. The kitchen is open so you can see all of the action. Yes, it can be crowded and warm and there really isn't much ambiance, but they could serve this food out of the back of a truck and I would still line up for it. I work downtown, but sometimes my coworkers and I will jump on a bus or take a taxi just to eat here.

When Maggiano's Little Italy opened in Lincoln Square, the line was frequently out the door. Now that it has been around for awhile, the crowds have eased up, but you'll still have to wait. Maggiano's is like an upscale Buca di Beppo. The decor is nice and warmly lit, which distracts from the huge crowds, so the place feels smaller than it actually is. The huge portions are served family style, so all you need are a few dishes to pass around. 2 entrees and a salad between the two of us meant lots of leftovers. We really enjoyed our salad, which had big chunks of avocado and bacon. My absolute favorite is their homemade gnocchi, which they served in a creamy marinara sauce. They also have a special counter just for take-out orders which would be good if you really wanted to avoid the crowds.

About a year ago we purchased the Lycksele Lovas sofa bed from Ikea and we've been really happy with it. It is small and compact but sleeps up to 2 adults. It is sort of a cross between a futon and a sofa. It folds up and down really easily and it seems to be built very solidly, unlike my previous futon. You can get different covers to put over it too. It is also surprisingly comfortable, both as a small sofa and as a bed. When people stay over we always get comments on how comfortable the bed was, despite how thin the mattress looks. It cost $219 at our local Ikea and fits just about anywhere. For us, it was a great option at an unbeatable price.

I'd send you to the Dahlia Bakery. It is part of the Tom Douglas restaurants where they make all of their desserts and pastries. You can get a variety of freshly baked goods like cookies, pastries, artisan breads and even homemade ice cream. The star of the show is the triple-coconut cream pie. I've heard more about this pie than any other dessert in Seattle. Some think it is over-rated, but it definitely has the wow-factor. It costs $29 for the 9-inch pie but that will serve 6-8 and definitely impress all of your guests. The bakery has its own website where you can check out the offerings : http://www.tomdouglas.com/dahlia-bakery/

Uwajimaya is an Asian specialty market that carries all sorts of imported good and groceries. If they don't have exactly what you're looking for, you'll at least find something of interest there. I always do! Their biggest store is in Seattle, but there is also a store in Bellevue on NE 24th and I56th Ave NE. You can also check out their website http://www.uwajimaya.com. Good luck!

I am hesitant to write a negative review of any business, but this place has earned it. My review is based off of 4 visits to this theater, so I believe it is fair. From reading the other reviews I see that I am going to be in the minority, but I really despise this theater. Yes, it is new. Yes, the seats are large and comfy. Yes, all the good movies play here. But it all comes at a price. First off, it is $9.50 for a regular-priced ticket. Easily the most expensive in the Seattle area, Cinerama aside. Next, it has been extremely crowded every time I have been there. So crowded that the parking lot has been full 3 out of the 4 times I have been there.
Not only that, but it is over-run with obnoxious teenagers. Why do I use the word over-run? Because the management staff cannot control these groups. 3, count em 3, times my $9.50 movie has been severely interrupted by young people laughing, yelling things at the screen, answering cell phones and overall disrespectful behavior. Once I asked the management to handle the situation, and they did nothing. The two other times I had to take matters in to my own hands and speak to these groups directly. After the last time this happened, I spoke to the customer service rep. about their policy regarding these incidents. He said if someone is being disruptive, they will send a staff member into the theater to check it out and if the people are still being disruptive, they MAY ask them to leave. This is a terrible policy which results in people missing a good chunk of the movie to deal with rude idiots. I truly believe that local teenagers have made a game out of interrupting movies because they know they can get away with it and that is funny to them. I have no idea how these people are even getting in to these shows, since two of the times this has happened the shows have been rated R.
I have sent my concerns to the management, who responded by telling me that they know it is an ongoing problem for them. This makes me wonder why they are not enforcing a stricter policy! They sent me some passes for my trouble. We used them recently, and to their credit there was no incident (minus the 30 minutes it took to park and the 10 minutes in line). We also saw a movie that had been out for 3 weeks with only 5 or so other people in the theater, so I think that helped a bit.
Bottom line is that it is just not worth the hassle to see a show here. Sure it is beautiful, but it is not worth having your show interrupted. I'd rather go to Crossroads, where it is a little low-key, but at least I know I will watch what I paid for in peace.

Specialty's has become a go-to option for lunch. The opening of a new location on 5th and Union has cemented their place as one of the top bakery-cafes in the downtown corridor. The sandwiches are huge, made-to-order and loaded with goodness. Careful though...they aren't as healthy as you would imagine. Many are slathered with mayo or oil and their freshly baked bread (though delicious!) is loaded with calories. They also serve salads for the calorie-conscious, but make sure to get the dressing on the side. The soups are also a tasty and inexpensive way to go. They also offer many breakfast items, including oatmeal with fun toppings. The breakfast sandwiches will tide you over until at least 2pm.
However, it is their pastry counter that really makes this chain stand out. They have several varieties of cookies that are truly amazing. They have one that includes oatmeal, chocolate chips and wheat germ that could qualify for the best thing I have ever tasted.
Specialty's is almost always crowded, but you can get in and out faster if you use their online ordering system. Go to www.specialtysdirect.com, order and pay with your credit card. In 15 minutes or less you can show up and be in and out in 30 seconds. They also give you a free lunch after 12 orders, which seems like a lot, but most of their customers come back again and again.

This do-it-yourself ceramic painting studio is located in the Crossroads Mall. It is has quite a few tables and a big room in the back for private parties. It works like other businesses of its kind--you pick a ceramic piece and they go to work painting it with their supplies. What is really nice about this place is that you don't pay for the time that you paint. It is all included in the price of the piece you choose. Other places I have painted charge you by the hour, which makes it very expensive for people like me who are very slow painters. They have lots of pieces to choose from, from tiny figurines to huge platters. Some nights they hold adult-only salsa nights, where they play salsa music and serve margaritas. This is definitely a place to keep in mind on a rainy day.

This is my favorite specialty store in the Market--and not just because I am Italian! Their selection is almost overwhelming. The have all sorts of Italian imports--olive oils, canned items, pastas, even cookies. They also have a refrigerated case full of take-home goodies like lasagna, ravioli, gelato and stocks. The cheese counter is a sight to behold and has more selections than anywhere else I've seen. The also have salami, bacon, sausages, olives and all the makings of a perfect antipasto platter. The fresh ricotta is heavenly. The sales staff is really friendly and knowledgeable and you will probably need them. Upstairs they keep all of their wine, and the selection is decent for a shop of their size. Again, the staff is fantastic and will steer you toward the right bottle. You really can't go wrong with anything from this store. Also, their website has tons of recipes that will help you infuse some creativity into your meals. Shops like this make cooking and entertaining fun!

I much prefer Las Margaritas to our local Azteca. The food seems fresher and the menu has more options. The atmosphere is really fun and colorful, but still low key. The servers have always been fantastic--super-friendly, even with all the kids they deal with. They are also really quick, so this would be a good place to go if you are in a hurry. The chips and salsa taste like homemade and I highly recommend anything with the mole sauce (not always on the menu but worth requesting). They happily modify the menu to bring you what you want. Definitely a fun place to bring your family.
