I do love that Lowe's is so conveniently right down the stree. I do not love that, aside from one experience, their sales staff has almost never known anything about what I am asking about, and they often show little to no interest in finding out. I've visited there a number of times to buy garden supplies, lumber, or miscellaneous yard merchandise. Often their staff doesn't know where things are located, doesn't know what I'm talking about, or takes hours (punctuated by annoyed sighs that I would dare to ask for help) to collect the lumber I've ordered and paid for already. I think I'll start to look for a smaller operation.

I'll admit it. When Tutta Bella first opened I probably ate there twice a week on average. I'll admit it, I loved their food. But something changed for me. Maybe it was when their exceptionally reasonable prices went up; or when their wait for a table rose to half an hour on a weekday night; or maybe I just didn't find their food interesting anymore. In any case, I still find their pizzas and salads adequate. I wouldn't say no to a free dinner there. But there are other, more unique and delicious places to go.
And their service is alternately fantastic or terrible.

I love books, and I love them even better when they are half the price. This bookstore isn't as new, clean, and shiny as some of the full-priced bookstores, but it usually has what I'm looking for, and usually has at least one used / low-cost copy. Plus I can bring in old books I want to sell, and though I won't be starting a business anytime soon selling old books, the little dough I do make from them allows me to buy a couple of new ones off the shelves. Overall a good deal.

I would definitely make sure to do the following:
1. Tour downtown and the lights and shopping at Pacific Place and Westlake Malls. There are plenty of trees, lights, carousels, and carolers, and there's also a shuttle that will take you to the Waterfront, Pike Place, and the International District.
2. Go to Snoqualmie or another pass for a day in the snow, either innertubing or just building snowmen.
3. Check out any number of fun coffee shops or restaurants. Most non-Seattleites don't get much good Asian food, or good coffee.
4. Do a tour of the city, making sure to hit Fremont, downtown, Columbia City, the Ave, and Broadway. And show off our beautiful water by going to Gasworks park!
Have fun!

Okay, after much perusal, grocery shopping and years of patronage, here are my official declarations on what's good and what's not at your neighborhood TJ's.
Good: Marinara in a Can; Spanish Chicken Stew; Mint Chocolate UFO disks; Caramel Popcorn Mix; TLC Crackers; Sesame Sticks; Teriyaki Sauce; Wet Cat Food; Pizza Dough, and most things that would cost dollars more at a specialty grocery store. Plus they're fun.
Not Good: Most soups and sauces are pretty low in any kind of flavor; toiletries don't seem to be particularly effective; and most things from the deli seem to go bad before I can eat them (hummus, guacamole, fruit, etc). Plus, they are almost always out of stock of something I'm looking for.

This fairly new kitschy lil' diner in Columbia City has many people's hearts...but not mine. The food, though bright, clean, and good, isn't exceptional in my mind. I mean, people swear by this place, and I think it's probably the fact that it's a good looking community meeting place in a cute neighborhood more than anything. The people are pleasant, the food is pleasant, and the prices are pleasant...but I don't find it exceptional.
My favorite part: the sweet-potato fries and good coffee.
My least favorite part: they are not open on Mondays, and they don't really attempt to "fit" in a multicultural neighborhood.

The Lake Route Cafe in South Seattle is the perfect breakfast dive. Their crowded, understaffed cafe nonetheless manages to produce cheap, delicious, and healthy meals. Their Montana Potatoes are usually on special (a pile of potatoes, meat, eggs, cheese, and onions with a buscuit or muffin), or try their buckwheat pancake, mondocious muffins, omelettes, or any number of other options. Their clientele is diverse as well, ranging from cops to families to young couples from the neighborhood.

I accidentally went to the Sunflour Cafe in Wedgewood on the (miscommunicated) advice of a friend. I'm sorry I did. The baked goods looked unimaginative and dry, the server was unashamedly disinterested, and the salad was totally boring. It was not an accidentally wonderful find; it was a waste of time.

I don't think it's just because I've been visiting Dr. Al Kariya's office since I got my first teeth: the man has a professional, consistent, and calming way with people and their choppers. I attribute my lack of dental-fear to his talents, and I highly recommend him to any family, adults and / or children. He is conveniently located downtown, and I think has an office on the Eastside as well. He's accomplished and experienced, but will still be around for a good long time.

Finally: a gym that's not just out to make money and make me feel fat!
The folks behind Rainier Health and Fitness realized that the Rainier Valley did not have any (not a one!) options for people looking to get in shape and learn about how to be healthy. Keeping in mind that the community is largely low-income and doesn't have a lot of access to health services or nutritional education, they opened a non-profit gym right on Rainier.
Its current location is tiny (about 800 square feet) and is not a "commuter gym", meaning that it does not have showers or locker rooms. What it does have, however, is a sliding scale for payment with great prices; personal training (based on core strength and supplemented with cardio); friendly staff; sponsored events with free team training (such as the STP and Danskin Triathlon); women-only events and hours; and everything you need for a good workout, besides a pool.
The great news is, in time for the New Year they are planning to open a space five times the size of their current building just a couple of miles down the road. Their new 4,000 square foot building will open the opportunity to add classes, more machinery, and staff to their program. A great gym with a great mission.
