I know Anthony's is well-known in Seattle for their impressive views and fresh, expensive seafood, but I remain unimpressed. Maybe it's the heavy, uninspired, boring food they continue to serve; maybe it's all the old-country-club folks that seem to fill the place. It just seems a little outdated in a town of fresh, young, innovative restaurants that, many of which, offer good seafood too.
And I swear this is true: I was just telling my mom how heavy and unhealthy I thought their food was when the guy next to us proceeded to have a heart attack, thus proving my point (he turned out okay).
I do have to say though: they have the best clam chowder EVER.

I like Verite not only for it's unique ambiance, but also because they just plain make a good cup of coffee. I don't find them particularly friendly or exceptionally comfortable, but their store is nice enough, with fun artwork sometimes from the local elementary school, and there's really nothing wrong with the location or decoration. Plus I like a company that takes a great cup of coffee seriously, both taste-wise and aesthetically, and though I haven't tried the cupcakes, I hear they are pretty outstanding.

If you're looking for a place that always has a large selection of fun, delicious desserts, try Dilettante. They are open pretty late, which is really nice when you're looking for somewhere to go after a show, at the end of a great date, or just when you get that late-night craving for things like Mexican Hot Chocolate, Chocolate Mousse Cake, or White Chocolate truffles. They also sell chocolates and drinks, and they make their own chocolate and coffee. A definite treat for out-of-towners, and check their website (www.dilettante.com) for a 10% coupon for their delightful mochas.

I've been a runner for years, and as someone who also likes to get a deal, I've been buying discount running shoes for just as many years. I was recently convinced to try out Super Jock n' Jill, however, and I don't think I'll ever go back to discount shoes.
A trainer recently told me that the material in running shoes slowly degrades, so that even if you don't use them, they aren't nearly as effective after about 8 months. So buying from those discount stores, where shoes have been sitting in a warehouse (or other stores) for months, sort of defeats the point.
At Super Jock n' Jill, the salespeople always take your foot size and shape, your arch style, AND your running style into consideration before selling you a shoe. And they aren't selling you just what is most expensive. Most of thier shoes are around $90, so they are in it to sell you whatever shoe works best. I feel so confident now knowing that not only are my shoes fitted for comfort and performance, but to prevent injury.
Downfalls: not as cheap as the discount competitors, and not a huge amount of locations. Upswings: personal attention, quality merchandise, and discounts for trainiers and coaches.

And this is coming from a former Vegan. Jones' BBQ is perhaps the best place to eat BBQ in the city. At least, it's the most established, and the most well-known for authenticity and consistency. I myself love the beef brisket, the baked beans, and the cake, but I wouldn't turn down anything there.
The only think to complain about is the high prices (worth it, though), the richness and sweetness of the meat (but it slows you down so you don't eat too too fast), and that sometimes it's slow at lunchtime. But who's in a hurry? I need a whole afternoon to enjoy all that FOOD!

I was thrilled when American Apparel came to Seattle. Finally, a hip, socially-conscious place to shop for my clothes without worrying about who was exploited to make me look cute. But when I finally went into the store, not only were the clothes poorly made, overpriced, and boring, but their advertising is (has anyone else noticed?) semi-pornographic. I promise, I'm not really that much of a prude. Is it so much to ask for a socially conscious clothing store that is the total package?

Specialty's sandwiches are satisfying for a filling lunch, and their soups are homemade daily. But the real reason to visit are their fantastic cookies. They are handmade around the clock, often hot and always soft and flavorful. Each one could be a meal, and is reminiscent of anything your momma made at home.

I know this isn't really a chapstick that is on the market, but I just have to say now that it's dry season: whoever makes the chapstick that they give out at NELA (The National Education and Loan Association Downtown) makes the best lip balm there is. Just minty enough, not too greasy, lasts for a while. It's better than Burt's Bees, even. Go in and ask about financing school, and while you're at it, pick up a chapstick.

Paseo is currently the absolute top of my list for best sandwich in the city. The crusty bread, tender marinated pork, succulent caramelized onions and jalapenos, and crisp lettuce all combine to make a completely satisfying, non-greasy, delicious meal for a fair price. I know, I know: there's never anywhere to sit, and they only take cash. And once when I got take-out there, I ended up eating with chopsticks because they were out of forks. But we like that fusion food in Seattle, don't we?

I know this does not answer your question, but I can't help it: I have to let you know. I found an organic pie crust at PCC that is so flaky and delicious I find myself digging around the apples to get at it; and I am notoriously someone who leaves crust on the plate. Coupled with Martha Stewart's Mile High Apple Pie recipe, I have had an astounding number of compliments (and requests!) for the pie. IF you have the time, try it out. It's a less time-consuming option than making your own crust, and turns out pretty delicious.
