Vegetarians steer clear... this churrascaria style restaurant is for the carnivore types only. For those who don't understand what churrascaria (a South American barbecue) style is; I'll explain. You don't get a menu, you don't choose a meal. You just bring an appetite and the meat loving side of you and sit down with your plate and a color-coded "coaster." One side is green and the other is red. When you're ready to eat, make sure it's green side up. Shortly thereafter, a fairly steady stream of servers come by with a 2 foot spit that's skewering all types of meat, be it beef, pork, turkey, and so on prepared in all sorts of ways. Your veggies needs are met though; served family style and always refillable. When you or your plate get too full, just flip the coaster to red and you won't be bothered by these wonderful purveyors of meats. Feel free to "go green" when you see something interesting. You will also see them comy by wheeling a conference table to your place setting with things that can't be carried via their swords such as shrimp, lobster, and salmon.
The environment/experience is worth it all on its own, but Churrascaria Plataforma combines a fantastic decor and the food itself is EXCELLENT. It's moderately priced, given the experience and quality - figure $60-$70 per person to include the meal, a round of drinks and a low-mid range bottle of wine.
A must for all Manhattanites.

The Beacon Theatre is a waste of time and money. As another reviewer mentioned, the screens are too small and the sound is subpar. This is unacceptable for action flicks especially. So go there for kids movies, comedies, drama and romances? Absolutely not. As if the physical problems with the theater were not enough, the entire environment is awful due to being plagued with underage viewers indscriminantly let in by the staff. Such events such as cell phones ringing and full conversations being carried on DURING the MOVIE to yelling, items being thrown, and wanton disregard for the viewing experience of others have all occurred to my personally. Why have I been there enough times to go through all of that? 2 reasons: the first is that several of those happened all at once, and the other is that there's simply nowhere else to go.
And don't think that the management has not been alerted. I can personally attest to lodging a complaint of my own in addition to several friends and coworkers of mine. The responses seem to stick within 3 options - 1) no reaction at all or complete apathy 2) saying that there's nothing that can be done or 3) the most ludicrious of the pathetic bunch - an offer for coupons to see more movies there, but never a refund.
So watch a movie at home or get ready for chaotic teen scene at the Beacon.

2 and a half years ago when I first arrived in Sumter, a coworker comes in with a gigantic sub sandwich that, I'll admit, looked pretty tasty. I look at the bag that this beast of a sub is sliding out of and I say - "I KNOW THAT LOGO... THAT'S JERSEY MIKE'S." It was instantly recognizable from my dayes back home in Jersey. Immediately, I dropped what I was doing to go pick one up.
Much to my pleasure I found that the meat is all freshly sliced and is of the Jersey Mike's brand (the same they use at the original) and the bread is actually imported from Jersey. I get a simple sandwich of Provolone, Salami, Proscuttini (black pepper ham) and boiled ham with not toppings so I can truly sample the taste. Let me tell you... close your eyes, salt the air and you'd swear you were on the Jersey shore again. I was hooked.
With 18 or so varieties to choose from and sizes ranging from Mini to Regular to Giant, you can never be without something to choose. Oh, they have hot sandwiches too that I'll tell you about in just a minute. For the carb-conscious crowed there's a Sub in a Tub which is the insides of the sandwich without the bread or put any combination into a wrap.
For hot sandwiches, there's the Philly Cheesesteak which I was apprehensive to try. No Philly is like a Philly from Philly. Well... Philly look out 'cause this is CLOSE. As close as it gets. Geno's and Pat's would be proud.
No need to go anywhere else for a sub sandwich as long as Jersey Mike's is around.

Ok so I'm a HARSH reviewer of Italian food, being entirely of Italian descent and coming from a kitchen laden with Italian goodies my entire life.
Outside of my own kitchen, I wouldn't go anywhere else in the SC area for Italian food. They have the BEST garlic rolls south of Brooklyn, NY and their calzones are so enormous that you'll explode trying to finish one... believe me when I tell you that exploding is a better option than letting it go to waste.
Their stuffed shells bathe in a delicious red sauce with a topping of baked Mozzarella cheese so thick, it's like ice fishing for the shells.
Now, as with any good Italian restaurant, it's loaded with oil and grease, but it's worth it, just be warned. I have tried to make my way through the menu but the few things I've had are so good that I can't seem to tear myself away from them.

This place has it all. Great food, fun atmosphere, great people.
Tiffany's is actually both a restaurant and a bar. One side is a sitdown restaurant which used to be the nonsmoking side when you could smoke inside, and is still the more traditional restaurant
The other side is the bar that still has regular tables as well as high tops (tables with barstools for those not in the know). The 3-sided bar has a multitude of TVs above tuned into every sports game imaginable - helps that it's owned by ex pro-footballer Tony Siragusa.
If you're not in the mood for a full meal, they've got a great line of bar food from Quesadillas to Mozzarella Sticks, and right on down the typical bar food line. Even free popcorn at the bar.
There's also the patio that's open all summer, where you can smoke and eat and even into part of the cooler months (April, May, Sept, etc) when the sides roll down to keep the heat in but still feel like you're outside.
And if that's not enough, there's the all time classic bar game - Megatouch machines, a GoldenTee that's not only updated every year but has seen quite a bit of action from the bar staff on their off time. The regulars will tell you all about it. That's just the kind of friendly staff they've got. And let's not forget NTN, the TV based trivia games played through a handheld unit given to you bar or tableside.
So for good service, good food and good fun in a sports bar/family restaurant atmosphere... GO TO TIFFANY'S.
When I return to NJ after my military sevice, I know I will.

The model for customer service and customer respect is found at Tony's Guns in Sumter.
When I first started looking to purchase a firearm, I went to several other places. Some one shop mom and pop type places and some part of a chain. None of them made me feel completely at ease, which was important to me when buying a GUN. There's a process of forms and approvals and background checks, etc and I wanted to be aware of what I was getting myself into.
I then stumbled upon Tony's. From the getgo they pulled out the gun I was interested in and it's comparable brands, models, calibers, and even variants of the same exact gun and explained to me the differences of each one. I was not very gun savvy in the beginning.
As it turns out, they sold me on the gun I had sold myself on. They walked me through the process step by step until the gun was in hand and made sure I had all the necessary accessories such as hearing and eye protection and cleaning kits. All necessary things that a new owner overlooks. One may argue that they got the better of me by making me walk out with stuff I hadn't planned on buying, but if you leave without hearing protection, you didn't pull the wool over anyone's eyes.
I've been back for 2 guns since plus hundreds or even thousands of rounds of ammunition in between. Every time I walk in, i'm greeted like a friend or neighbor - sometimes even with a hug from Tony himself (who is a character). I even go in there just to hang out because of the entertainment value and the friendly staff loves their customers.
I have brought several people with me who will no longer shop anywhere else for these types of products.
They are also extremely supportive of military personnel, which is great in a town like Sumter, but not found as frequently as one might expect.
I'm a customer for life.

Ok, maybe the title was a little harsh, but at best this place should just be called Car Stereo. The plus need not be said.
I had my windows tinted there based on several recommendations. As it turns out, they are recommended because they are basically the ONLY place in town to get it done.
After all day without my car, I picked it up to find numerous bubbles on the rear windshield which I was told was normal while it was drying and would go away in a few days. Guess what folks? No such luck. So back we go to Car Stereo Plus and they seem entirely shocked that it looks like this still so they "fix it" which lasted about a day and the same bubbles came right back. This went on several times until I actually went on a mission to fix it myself. The best I could do was get the bubble close enough to the bottom that it wasn't really visible, which is more than I can say for the professionals.
The owners are on a constant soapbox for Sony and Kicker as that's all they sell and will lure you into their sales pitch by telling you that it is the best. Now for the informed audiophile such as myself, I was browsing for places that sell brands I know and love. They didn't sell them but rather than being the better businessperson and pointing me toward someone who could help me, they decided to pan and jeer at my choices.
If you just need something simple like new speakers to replace the stock ones, go there. If you have legitimate concern and plans for your vehicle's sound system, go anywhere else. Oddly enough, BestBuy's car audio department uses only CERTIFIED technicians with a hug range of brands and models.

You're not going to believe me but it's true... the best Chinese food in or around sumter is the Chicken Shack. It's a little place that you'll easily pass right by.
It's in Dalzell, SC off of Rt 521. Cross 521 from Frierson Rd to the T intersection, make a right and follow it until you see a green and pink (yes green and pink) building on your left.
There are only about 5 tables in the place, and 6 things to choose from on the menu but the food there is unbeatable.
For 6 bucks you will get more food than you can eat in a sitting, but you will surely want to try your damndest, and a can of soda. It's no frills, high quality food.
The food is served in the square styrofoam containers and is packed to tight with food and rice that when you open it, the rice is still form fitted in the shape of the top of the container. You get plasticware and soda in a can. The tables and chairs are of an assorted variety from a yard sale or odd lot but you won't notice while shoveling the food into your mouth.
I guarantee that I've just unleashed Sumter's best kept dining secret. I urge everyone to try it.
(And this is coming from someone who thumbs his nose at less than ritzy facilities. there's just no arguing with good cooking).

Do not bring your business here. I purchased a used vehicle from them (It was an Acura which may have been part of the problem). When I received the vehicle, the rear lights and dash lights did not work which was part of a major electrical problem. A dome light can be overlooked but EVERYTHING in the dash and an ENTIRE rear set of lights? Someone signed off without doing full quality control checking on the vehicle.
When notified, I was initially told that I would have to pay for the repair even though I picked up the vehicle that way since it was not on an IOU. I'm not sure how I would have been able to screw up so much in less than eight hours.
I had traded in my old car with them so when the Acura was to be left off, I was without a car. This process took nearly a month with several trips back and forth to them for troubleshooting and installing the wrong parts (all of which I was initially billed for). Additionally, they had gone back and forth to Acura in Colmbia for assistance.
They finally provided me with 2 rental cars over the course of the time, each with not enough gas to get the gas station (thank God for downhill and neutral).
When Acura in Columbia found the right part, Dodge refused to pay the extra cost for overnight shipping even though this had gone on so long I had made my first payment on the car.
My salesman would not return my calls and the maintenance manager wouldn't come to the phone when I called for status.
When I spoke to the General Manager about the problem, he told me I was lucky that they finally agreed to even pay for this and shouldn't be complaining.
I will never again go to them for anything, new or used and make it a point to warn everyone of the poor customer service I received.
To boot, they had the nerve to send me a customer satisfaction survey in the mail which they received back - in pieces after a paper shredder went to work on it.
The absolute WORST buying experience of my life.

Outback being one of the best restaurants in Sumter isn't saying much given Sumter's track record of Restaurants.
It opens late, the food is subpar, and the service is atrocious.
It's, by far, the worst Outback I've seen. You may as well not tell them how you want your steak done because it's always one of two ways... So rare it may as well be not cooked at all (that way it would at least be quick) or a beef version of a hockey puck.
I've sat for an entire meal with an empty glass and had several servers in an evening, since one can't manage to follow up. And even those that I've stopped and asked things of (a ketchup bottle that's not empty, or extra of something or other), have failed to remember in the 6 seconds it takes to go back to the kitchen.
The only high note, was that my horrendous experience was met with a nearly full credit to my bill.
