I really like this store. Came here with my partner for our ring stones, in burmese jadeite. It's a great place to find obscure types of cabochons and jewelry items! I also picked up some silver wire, and some tigertail, both at decent prices. Lots of random stones and rings and assorted items here too -- the store is wall-to-wall rotating display cases, all filled with interesting items. Prices here are all pretty inexpensive, too.

I've stopped going to this store completely, mainly because their prices are over-the-top and their selection doesn't make the trip worthwhile. The last time I went in, I was looking for sterling silver earwires. When I found out that it was five dollars for a single pair, I stuttered and stammered and left. (The average price is $1-$3.) As far as I can tell, they only stay in business because their location in one of Portland's best shopping districts makes them more visible than other, less expensive stores.

The selection here is pretty optimal, and includes beads, wire, tigertail, findings of all sorts, chain, and cord. But the real reason I'll shop here over any other bead store in Portland is prices. They aren't wholesale or close by any means, but the prices here are reasonable retail value, which means that I can pick up beads and findings here and not pay more than the end piece can sell for! They also often have good clearances.

I came here for bookmaking supplies before, acquiring some off-white handmade paper with leaves pressed into it. They have a wide selection and some high-quality papers that other shops in town do not. Their prices, however, are quite high on most of their things. A lot of gifts, stationery, and like items are available here.

The first time I noticed Shadowhouse, I was walking down Hawthorne St. and saw the books in their window. Pulp novels and old occult texts -- including a collection of Austin Osman Spare's writing that is very hard to come by. I made a note of the place and that I would definitely want to come back later.
I have, more than once, and this shop continues to amaze and delight. I bought a hat there which I'm wearing to my wedding, and they have a great selection of fine art, kitsch, esoterica, and collectibles, with an emphasis on strange books. They stock hard-to-find ritual herbs, unique clothing, and Cthulhu statuettes.
You know that book you read when you were a kid? The plot is ubiquitous -- kid goes to a weird little shop, buys an oddly colored statuette, and when they goes home it starts talking to them? This is the shop where you buy that item. It's an absolutely wonderful and irreplaceable treasure of Portland, and is one of the reasons I like to live in this city.

I've gotten my hair cut here twice, once in a boy cut and the other time in a mohawk. I don't think that's what they are used to doing here at all (she told me it was her first time doing a mohawk!) as they cater to a more ordinary clinetele -- but regardless, they have exactly what makes a cheap haircut place good -- a willingness to follow directions! I was pretty satisfied with the end result both times I came here, and even more satisfied with the "damage" -- about $10 each time.

I first came here when visiting the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival on my first trip to Portland. (The festival occupies the Hollywood Theatre across the street from this shop.) Its comics selection is by most accounts overshadowed by the selection of other stores, but I come here for the toys! There are all kinds of strange magnets, gag gifts, action figures, gaming dice, Devil Ducks -- you name it. I also really like the atmosphere, and the fact that they have a small roleplaying game selection, unlike comics-only stores.

I love this little shop. I bought a wonderful 70's-style smoking jacket here, and they had all kinds of lovely vintage clothing at prices ranging from $5 to $50. Hours are presently variable or by appointment, so you ought to make an appointment, because I want these people to stay in business! They have some of the best clothing available in Portland, and at quite reasonable prices. The owner (at least I think it's the owner) also has a very cute little dog . . .

They manage to strike a balance here between price, selection, and quality, a rare thing for thrift shops. I bought a messenger bag here -- it was a little expensive, but it's in great condition and serves me very well -- and a bathroom rug, which was quite cheap and also working great. None of this is ever bottom-of-the-barrel stuff, but it's not a "prestigious vintage shop" that sells items for new prices, either! Everything seems to be in good order and priced fairly.

I like coming here too look at hats, mainly, but the rest of their merchandise is also appealing. Prices are not dirt cheap, but are quite reasonable for the merchandise being sold. There are usually a number of good hats here, men's and women's, in the $20.00 and under range -- a rarity especially for men's hats of the formal variety. The range of styles here is also quite appealing.
