I contacted Alan Chappron, owner of Gemological Consulting Services, because of the other positive review from judysbook and was not disappointed. I initially emailed Alan from his website to set up an appointment and he responded promptly, just a few hours later. I liked that. Then, Alan appraised my diamond ring while we waited and within one week, had mailed us a nice, 2 page laminated report. The whole experience was great - I highly recommend Alan.

Our story: we recently built an adobe style home outside St. George and Stout Roofing installed our roof and drains (just over a year ago now). All was fine until we left for vacation about a month ago only to return to find water on the floor in 2 rooms and part of our ceiling sagging. We happened to return when it was raining and water was streaming down the wall from the section of sagging ceiling. We immediately called Stout, who came out within 2 hrs and applied a patch (fortunately it was sat and not sun). The culprit was the drain directly above the sagging ceiling area. It had been improperly sealed and so Stout applied a temporary patch and said they'd return to fix it properly later in the week. They are here now and what we found out was that only ONE of our drains (out of about 10) was done properly the first time. All the others are missing this "skirt" that goes between the drain and the membrane (this is in addition to the seal around the drain). So obviously the potential damage could have been far greater. Talk about INCOMPETENCE. How the heck do these guys stay in business.
So now we have drywall, insulation and texturing/painting to do in order to repair the water damage. In addition, part of our floor is ruined and one piece of furniture damaged. And it's a little over a year since Stout did the original job. Our next step will be to ask if Stout would kindly cover the cost of repair. Stay tuned -- I will amend this post with their response.
Ammendment: It's now been over 1 month since we faxed Stout a copy of the invoice from the drywall company along with a chronology of events and request for reimbursement. We phoned about a week ago and spoke with Kelly Casey, a co-owner. He said he had approved payment and would check with Travis about the status of the check. Well, we have yet to receive a check in the mail and so we phoned again and left a message for Travis, who never returned our phone call. We will attempt to contact Stout one more time but then, we will need to get other parties involved.
A caveat: we noticed that Stout is building a home or homes in Virgin -- Larry Stout's name is on the construction sign. Buyer beware.

Southwest Marble & Granite installed the granite counters in our kitchen and our undermount apron style elkay sink. We assumed they knew how to install apron sinks as their work appears in the St George parade of homes and they appeared professional. We had a beautiful piece of granite picked out. We weren't present for the installation but what we saw afterward was appalling. Instead of the sink front being flush with the cabinets on either side, it was recessed, as though they expected us to cover the nice stainless front with wood. And worse, the granite cut around it was one seamless piece. So the fix would involve finding more of the same granite to cut and then having the cut lines visible but this would enable the sink to be pushed forward. They did indeed do this (and we have cut lines in the granite running parallel to the sink) and refused to compensate us financially (even a token amount) for an inferior job. After a month or so, we had to call them back because the sink was not seated properly and was pulling away from the caulking. They shimmed up the sink and applied more caulking but we realized several weeks later that the sink needs yet another shim job. So my advice: STAY AWAY from these guys. They are amateurs masquerading as professionals. Don't be fooled by a nice showroom, as we were. It's all about the installation.

I have a Seiko perpetual calender watch and my battery died. I phoned watch repair at Macy's in Northgate and they told me 1 week and $50 to replace the battery because it had to be sent out. Alex quoted me $30 and did it overnight. (The battery for this particular Seiko IS more expensive than others and re-setting the calender is complicated.) Alex is very knowledgeable about different brands and types of watches, letting us know that kinetic powered watches are not a panacea. Their capacitors need upgrading after about 5 years. Alex is located in the Fred Meyer in Ballard.
