The Maple Art Theatre, which is nestled behind a mega mini mall along Telegraph Rd. and Maple (15 Mile) in Bloomfield Hills is not the greatest theatre, but you don't have a whole lot of choices for Indie movies.
Last night, curious to see what "Jesus Camp" was all about I headed out to the Maple Art Theatre since it was the only place playing the film. A ticket to the film cost me $8.75, slightly higher than the going rate at other bigger theatres.
The staff was mostly sitting around talking, not really being very helpful. After I walked through the gate toward the theatre and employee ran up to me and asked to tear my ticket (there was nobody around at the gate). I felt like I was bothering him from talking with his friends. Once in the theatre there were a few previews and the movie started. The house lights remained on "dim" setting the entire time and unfortunatley I was sitting directly below one which distracted me almost the entire show - I probably should have just moved. Everytime there was music with even a tinge of bass, the speakers in the theatre rattled and made popping sounds.
If you're going to see a film here, I recommend you sit up front where the house lights aren't as bright and the sound system seems to be a little better.
To their credit, this theatre and the Main St. Theatre in Royal Oak are the only places you're going to find newer indie movies and documentaries.

Usually I'm not a fan of chain restaurants, but you can't help but to love the Macaroni Grill. The servings are insane (I usually get the build-a-pasta dish) and the wine prices aren't terrible. This is my favorite of the Metro Detroit Macaroni Grill's because of it's quick location off of I-275 and it's large size and not-too-bad faux italian decor.
The service here is usually hit-or-miss - sometimes you get very friendly waitstaff and sometimes they are grumpy. Frankly, you don't come here for the waitstaff. You come here for the enormous servings of delicious delicious pasta (also I've heard the Chicken Parmesan is yummy too).
The place is usually packed at lunchtime with traffic from the surrounding office buildings and during dinner hours with the yuppies from Northville. I suggest you go here on a Sunday or take a late lunch.

Akasaka, located on 6 Mile and Newburgh is my favorite place to get sushi when I am on the westside of town. It's in a mini mall just east of Newburgh road. I've never actually eaten IN the restaurant so I cannot attest to the decor or the service, however I've gotten carryout from here many times and have greatly enjoyed their sushi.
In fact, now that I think about it, Akasaka probably has the best sushi in Metro Detroit - although the sushi offerings in Metro Detroit are pretty slim pickins.

Having the opportunity to go there the other night, I was very very impressed with the Alley Grille Steakhouse. First off, the setting and decor is very very romantic - dim lights, piano player, wood paneling, well dressed staff). They have a great wine list (I recommend the David Bruce Pinot Noir) and a great menu with a wide selection of delicious food. I had the Prime Rib, which had a bit too much fat on it, but otherwise was very delicious and matched well with my selection of vino.
The staff here is seriously amazing. Our waitress always came at exactly the right times and the busboys removed our plates/dishes the second that we were done with them. The staff here works like a finely oiled machine.
The prices are on the high side, for wine and food expect to pay in the ~$80 range add desert and tip and you're in the $120 range. Nonetheless, this is the perfect place to take a date, although I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a first date.

The Old Shillelagh is one of my favorite downtown bars. They have a great selection of beers (although not a good as the DBC) and they have a great, fun, and laid-back atmosphere. The place is usually packed before and after Tigers games since they run a shuttle (even though it is within walking distance). The bartenders are pretty nice folk and the prices are ok.
I've never been upstairs at the Old Shillelagh, but I heard that it gets pretty roudy on Friday and Saturday nights with Irish music and people singing. Next time I go, I plan to go upstairs and check out the happenings.
If you're the kind of person who likes "fake" Irish bars, like the Claddaugh chain of bars, then the Old Shillelagh is *not* for you. If you're looking for good time in downtown Detroit this is a great place to start (or end) and evening.

I have a fetish for blackbean soup, I'll admit. Therefore, the Zoup in Troy gets my four starts (but not five, since it's in a tacky mini-mall). They fufilled my desire for a cup of blackbean soup and all was well.
The place kind of has a new-fast-food feel to it, like Qdoba or Chipotle (sans the burritos). It's clean and the decor is appealing. The soup is delicious.
I just wish the location wasn't in a minimall, with the windows overlooking a cracking parking lot and a dirt lot next door.

I used to spend a lot of time at this PF Changs when I worked on the floor above it. The food is "eh" and the waitstaff were always nice. The decor is the PF Changs standard - faux chinese. There are large cement horses outside of the doors which lend a little to the decor.
I have never really been impressed by any single dish at PF Changs. The lettuce wraps are the best thing on the menu and they're an appetizer. Everything else is just kind of boring and expensive. If you're at Somerset and looking for good semi-expensive eats, head over to J Alexanders in Somerset North or McCormick & Schmicks (the bar section) outside of the Somerset South.

I grew up in Troy and spent the better portion of my high school days working next door at Somerset Mall. Once I reached college age (and came home for christmas) I would go to McCormick's with my fellow co-workers. Since then, I've been back about a dozen times to visit old friends and co-workers. The bar is reguarly moderately busy (but not too busy) and full of local worker bees from the mall and the neighboring businesses. Happy hour is lots of fun at M&S with the $2 menu.
The restaurant is super classy, but I've only been to the restaurant once or twice. Usually, I go to M&S to get some fancy drinks, good hors d'oeuvres, and a relaxed and classy environment to meet with friends. There is a psuedo-dresscode, so don't go in wearing your KORN t-shirt or anything.

If you go to Buddy's and don't try the Greek Pizza at least once, then your life is incomplete. I mean, Buddy's has other excellent pizzas, but the Greek is the best. Buddy's will cost you an arm and a leg (in comparison with other pizza places), but it's worth every penny of additional credit card debt.

I would highly recommend Dr. Lipski at Williams Family Medicine in Livonia (on I-96 and Middlebelt). She a fabulous doctor. I don't know if they do kids, I'm a 20-something dude, but they are a family practice. She has probably the best bedside manner of any doctor I've ever had and she really cares about you!
This answer is about 5 months after you asked, but it doesn't hurt to recommend her.
