Vicente's Cuban Cuisine is one of the gems of the recent Downtown Detroit revival. It's snuggled on Library Street, across the street of the Skillman Branch of the public library by the old Hudsons' Building. Parking isn't too bad - you can park in the lot next door, on Broadway and walk a block, or in the Opera House Parking Garage (which is a block away).
The decor inside of Vicente's is simple but perfect - not too overdone, like many ethnic restaurants, but not too simple, like many modern upscale restaurants. The waitstaff is very friendly and the manager can usually be seen running around, greeting patrons, and opening the door for customers. There is a coatroom by the front door for the winter months.
The food is simply amazing. I prefer the Ropa Vieja or the trout dish, whose name I cannot remember. The drinks (specifically the Mojitos) are to die for. I simply cannot explain it - it's delicious.
You simply cannot enjoy fine dining in Metro Detroit until you've been to Vicente's Cuban Cuisine downtown.

I was in Grosse Pointe on Thanksgiving, visiting my family and figured I would head over to the local Blockbuster and pick up a copy of "The Wire" season 1. Once inside, the employee informed me that they were only shipped disk 3 of season 1 and they do not have disks 1 or 2. Well, then it's completely pointless to rent just disk 3. I spent about a half an hour looking around and eventually found some stuff I wanted to rent.
I went to the front desk to pay and told them I have an account, but at another store. I handed the employee my license and told her what store my account is at. She had to CALL INFORMATION to get to the other store. Once connected, they had no record of my account. Fine. I said I would open an account. I handed her my National City Debit/Credit card and my license and asked to open an account. I was then told that I could not open an account with my debit card, since Blockbuster accepts debit cards for payments but not for accounts (??). Baffled, since I cut up all of my credit cards, I didn't know what to do. She told me I could show my voter registration to get an account. (??)
Since I don't carry my voter registration around with me, I left empty handed. No wonder Blockbuster is getting killed by online competition, like Netflix - their customer service is comedic, at best. There are very few businesses that I hold ill-will towards - Blockbuster is now one.
If you're in Grosse Pointe, go about a west on Kercheval and go to the Movie Store, in the Park.

The Greektown Casino is my favorite Detroit casino. First, it's located within walking distance of everything downtown and parking is easy in their massive garage (on a non-baseball game day). The Motorcity and MGM casinos are located away from downtown and not in walking distance which is a pain if you are coming from a baseball game or dinner.
Greektown probably has the most slot machines and is usually the busiest. Therefore, also the best for people watching.
Nestled away on the second floor, you can find the penny slots which are almost impossible to find at the other casinos.

Seriously, words cannot even begin to explain the beauty of this building.

This place is totally overrated. If you're looking for cheap drinks and a good time you can do better elsewhere around downtown. If you're looking for an incredibly yuppie crowd and high drink prices then the Town Pump is for you.
Last time I was there was during a tigers game and the place was packed with yuppies and drink prices were exorbitant. The crowd was very homogenous and the bar didn't have the cool ballgame vibe that a place like the Old Shillelagh or Nemos has.

Bookies is one of my favorite downtown watering holes coming in a close second behind the Old Shillelagh on Monroe. Bookies is always very clean and very well kept and they have a great selection of drinks on tap. The employees are always super nice and the crowd is usually somewhat diverse.
In the summer this is one of my favorite places to drink - especially sitting outside on the patio - you have a great view of the city and good food and drinks.

I live very close to this restaurant but I don't really like to eat here. The food is diner-standard and the waitstaff is pretty diner-standard as well. Nothing really stands out about this place and it's usually pretty dead (except on weekday lunches with WSU campus traffic). On Saturday mornings, it's usually a bunch of older people sitting alone - kind of weirds me out when I come in with a guest.
If you're looking for better food in the WSU area, I recommend you grab pizza next door at the Circa or grab some grub on campus at one of the fast food joints.
If you're looking for breakfast in the midtown/downtown area, I'd head over to Eastern Market (south of Mack just east of I-75). Hit up the Farmer's Restaurant.

If you ever find yourself hungry in the morning on the east side of Metro Detroit, I advise you check out the Original Pancake House on Mack Ave. Hopefully, it's not a Saturday or Sunday morning though because this place is usually packed then.
They have decent coffee, amazing pancakes, and good prices. The waitstaff is pretty standard for a pancake place and the decor is very "Grosse Pointey". You won't find a better breakfast anywhere else on the east side of town.
I recommend the Blueberry Pancakes.

This is my favorite wine shop in all of Metro Detroit. They don't have the widest selection but they have *by far* the best prices on the best wines in town. There's always someone on staff who knows lots about wine and the shop owners have a penchant for picking out excellent wines. You can usually find a great bottle of Cab for about $6.99-15.99 that would go for $12.99 - $30 elsewhere.
If you're looking for an insane selection head out to the Suburbs (I prefer the Wine Barrel in Livonia or the Wineshop on Livernois and 15 in Troy). If you're looking for a shop that sells good wine at great prices, check out Cost Plus.
They even wrap your wine bottles in copies of the Metro Times :)

If you like Greek food, this is probably a great place to go.
