Suzie and Shireen are awesome and knowledgeable and provide great customer service for my dog and me. They know every dog in the neighborhood, as well as their owners and clearly run their business for the love of dogs. While other pet stores are cluttered, dirty, messy and un-welcoming, South Paw is a total winner! (Also, don't miss the sister store in Portrero, called Pawtrero.)

My Frenchie (in true breed fashion) hates baths and is scared of water. But, she really enjoys her monthly visits to Wags. The staff is friendly and accommodating and they do a great job at getting the dog stench out of her... for a short while anyway. She gets to hang out in the store, playing with toys and a group of other dogs while she waits for her bath &/or waits to get picked up by her dad and me. She comes home clean and tired, 2 things we love! Don't just think of this as a dog grooming place, but also as a chance for your dog to play with other dogs for an hour or two.

Authentic, delicious, fresh and in true French style. Having lived in France in the past, I do miss the unbelievably tasty bistro goodies, and this place fills the need while in SF. The pastries, though few in choice, are all flaky winners (but you should get there early, as they do sell out). Ah, and how can one go wrong with a fresh, crusty baguette stuffed with French butter, cornichons and jambon?! There are also a couple of tables outside, so bring Fido with you so you can enjoy great food and people watching in South Park.

I've eaten at fine dining establishments locally and around the world, and must say that MM is forgettable and truly mediocre at best. Yes, I get that he's a celebrity chef with a multitude of cool places, but for me, it must boil down to delicious food, wonderful service and a memorable overall experience. What we experienced was so-so food (not even close to what you'd expect in a place like this), pretty good service, and the memory of being floored by the $530 check (for 2). Well, don't get me wrong - I'll spend money on food like no one's business - but if I'm shelling out that kind of dough, I'd better leave pining for the chance to return as soon as I can. I left wanting to run for the hills. Anyway, we each did a 3-course prix fixe menu and it went like this: can't recall what I had to start (not a good sign that I can't recall and it was 2 weeks ago), fiance had black mussel moose that was B/B+; miso marinated black cod was so salty I was in a permanent pucker for the next 24 hours, fiance had osso bucco that was quite the opposite (tender but bland); dessert course for each of us was so run-of-the-mill. The waitstaff was cordial and attentive - though didn't seem to care about your dining experience - and overall atmosphere was nice, but this is hardly enough to creative a memory that I'd want to keep. Honestly, I'm happy that we went so that we won't ever need to return. Don't waste your time, stomach or money here.

GD is, hands down, the best haute cuisine restaurant in Northern CA. (And yes, I've been to all of them.) The staff is fabulous, professional, knowledgeable and totally down to earth - not snooty at all - and seem genuinely happy to be part of your dining experience. The food is to die for, especially the fois gras (sorry if you're anti, but it's amazing), lobster anything, and the duck. You'll also notice that you and your guest(s) can have conversations at a normal speaking level, which is sometimes unusual for a 5-star restaurant (where you usually feel like you're talking in a library). In true SF color, the patrons that come to GD are welcomed from all different walks of life - wearing everything from suits down to jeans, older folks to 20-somethings - and we're all brought together in our mutual love and appreciation for impeccably tasting and prepared food. You MUST have the cheese course; the waitstaff is super knowledgeable about each cheese and they are eager to share their knowledge with you. The sommelier is genuine and even complimented us with a wine selection that was lower priced on the list, saying it was a great choice and one he often recommends; there was no looking down on us for choosing a lower priced wine and we really appreciated that! I'd say this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but actually, you'll want to go again and again. (And you know, you actually could, because GD is a great value for what you get, unlike such places that will insult you, like Michael Mina and The French Laundry.)

Primo Patio has been one of my favorite little restaurants in South Beach. It's a cozy neighborhood joint that looks like a hole in the wall from the front but actually opens up to a nice size patio in the back. They serve great Caribbean cuisine at very affordable prices (lunch for 2 about $25 incl tip). You have to try the calamari, the jerk chicken and the jerk steak, and the "primo" sauce that they serve with everything is ridiculously addictive. Everything we've tried has been a winner! The owners are super friendly and passionate about their business. It shows in the food.

When we were looking for a great adoption center, we were really impressed by Maddie's, located at 250 Florida Street in SF. It's affiliated w/ the SF/SPCA. The place is beautifully kept and the animals looked well taken care-of and happy. I hope you find a great companion here!
