I love Old Navy's little boys clothes. It is so incredibly hard to find cute boy clothes that look like little boy clothing and not baby clothes. Old Navy's clothes look so cute on my toddler! There are other brands/stores that I like as well, but Old Navy fits well and wears well, and thus is a good value for the price. They often have good sales, too. I'm so glad that there is a store in the Everett Mall now.

I took my three-year old to Kids Kuts today, and she did a terrific job. It's designed just for kids, and my son was so busy having fun, he hardly even noticed that he was getting a haircut. She did a fantastic job and was amazingly fast. I'll definitely be taking him back there again. The salon has a website with information on services, prices, and hours, which I always find very helpful.

Avoid the newish Burger King in North Everett--we've been there 3-4 times since they opened, and EVERY TIME they've messed up the order. Furthermore, in addition to screwing up my order (how does "a whopper with cheese" sound like "a cheeseburger"??), they attempted to overcharge me by trying to charge me AGAIN for the side. The girl at the window, who apparently finds simple addition and subtraction beyond her skill set, argued and argued until finally I gave up and told her to cancel my order and give me my money back. Then she tried to give me only the money for the burger back (she must have a blind spot for onion rings or something), and I had to argue with her to get the rest of my money refunded, and even then she gave me too little change (and had to ask her supervisor how much she still owed, since she couldn't figure it out herself). Honestly, who needs that? There's a McD's, a Wendy's, a Jack-in-the-Box, a KFC, a Taco Bell, and Ray's all within a few blocks. Spare yourself the hassle of poor service!

If you lived in one of the apartments above Uwajimaya Village Seattle, you would never need to venture away from home again!
The large flagship market boasts a WaMu branch, a nice Shiseido shop (for the unfamiliar, Shiseido is a brand of upscale cosmetics geared towards the Oriental complexion), a beauty salon, an optician, a Kinokuniya bookstore (largely Japanese, but a good selection of books in English, too), a gift and housewares shop (everything from cards to rice cookers to fine artisan pottery), and a food court with a good selection of cuisines, in addition to their own deli.
The grocery itself is primarily Japanese and was founded back in 1928 by Fujimatsu Moriguchi, who named his Tacoma-based enterprise "Uwajima-ya" (Uwajima store) after his hometown. He and his family were interred during WWII, but afterwards relocated to Seattle, where they proceeded to open a retail store. Uwajimaya has been there ever since.
Uwajimaya offers Japanese and other Asian staples and delicacies, extremely fresh (read: sashimi-quality) fish, a wonderful selection of produce, cuts of meat popular in Oriental cuisine (including sukiyaki beef and pork), a good selection of Asian (again, primarily but not exclusively Japanese) wines and beers, a large selection of frozen foods, teas, snacks, noodles...basically everything one needs to cook nearly any Oriental cuisine at home. There's even a small selection of Western-style foods.
The gift and housewares section is separate from the grocery, and is a wonderful place to find gifts for a loved one, yourself, or your home (when was the last time you bought your house a present? ;-) ). There are Japanese knives, woks, bamboo steamers, rice cookers, dishes ranging from teeny condiment bowls to huge platters, cards with lovely calligraphed kanjis, Sanrio for the little ones...I think they even have fabric and patterns there (they used to, at any rate).
Kinokuniya is a wonderful place to browse for cookbooks, manga, and books about Oriental history, lifestyle, culture, and architecture--even if you don't speak the language, there is a large selection of books in English. I don't know offhand if there are books in languages other than Japanese and English, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they did.
We love to shop here, even though it's a long drive for us. We look at all the pretties, plan wonderful Asian meals and shop for them, browse the books, and then get lunch at one of the many stalls in the food court. Food Court offerings include: Aloha Plates (Hawaiian BBQ), Noodle Zen, Saigon Bistro, Shilla Korean BBQ, Thai Place, Yummy House Bakery (and oh, it is!)--even a Herfy's for the thoroughly unexperimental!

I tried--believe me, I tried! But after years of trying to get reliably good produce from Everett Oriental Grocery, I finally gave it up after the produce manager tried to convince me that the half-rotten bag of chilies in my hand was good. Sorry, fella, I know rotten produce when I see it!
Everett Oriental Market is primarily a Filipino market, but like most Asian markets, they offer a selection of foods beyond their own regional specialty. They do have some foods not readily available elsewhere locally, even my beloved Mekong, but really--don't plan to get anything fresh. You might get lucky; just don't rely on it! The location on Everett Mall Way can also be awkward and inconvenient, depending on the time of day, but if you time your visit well, you'll do fine. Some of the things I like to purchase there: coconut milk (often on sale), large packs of Shirakiku "hot mate" rice crackers, and wasabi peas. Also, if you're lucky, you'll find bean sprouts and Napa cabbage that are much nicer than those at the supermarket--just look them over carefully. I haven't had as much trouble with those--it's more the non-refrigerated produce such as chilies and Thai basil that I've had a lot of problems with. And between Mekong up closer to home and Uwajimaya about 15 minutes from my husband's workplace, Everett Oriental just isn't worth the drive to me.

We have a fairly long history with Mekong, which is a Vietnamese market. I've been shopping here since I was married, in 1992, and my husband had shopped there for a few years before that. Probably about 16 years altogether now. It's close to home, it has a terrific selection of Oriental groceries, they have a small but nice selection of Oriental dishes, and the prices are good. They sell produce, spices, frozen foods, canned goods, and lots of rice, as well as a various other groceries, beverages, Asian and Dutch goodies, and household items. There is an incredible selection crammed into their small store. "Mama Mekong" (as we always call the proprietress) is somewhat aloof but pleasant, especially once she's gotten to know you. She and her husband don't usually volunteer assistance, leaving customers to browse at their own pace, but should you have a question, Mama is right there to help you find what you need. Once in a while, some of the produce will be a little less than fresh (as happens even with large supermarkets), but overall it's good quality--much better than another Oriental market in Everett I used to shop at! It is definitely the place to get ginger, shallots, and limes, though, as well as less common Oriental produce such as galangal, lemongrass, and sometimes even curry leaves. Since it's a Vietnamese grocery, the majority of the foods there are the sort sought by Vietnamese--southeast Asian and Dutch foods. However, there is a selection of foods from other parts of Asia, such as won ton wrappers, sheets of nori, and Basmati rice. Check them out, and maybe you'll find yourself inspired to prepare a curry or some pho tonight!

I usually go to the Everett Clinic Main Campus walk-in clinic, off of Rucker Avenue in Everett, but there are other branches, too. There are other clinics with walk-in clinics, too, but I personally prefer Everett Clinic. You don't have to have insurance to go, although if surgery is needed, it won't be super cheap for you. Most business offices for these clinics are willing to work with patients to arrange payments for them; you can ask about such arrangements either by calling the clinic in advance or by asking when you go.

Just For Kids used to be a great place to shop. After all, why spend hundreds on baby clothes and gear that they'll outgrow in months (if not weeks)? JFK sells used clothing for kids of all ages, as well as maternity clothes. They also sell used baby gear, such as strollers, high chairs, car seats, cribs, and toys, and they buy clothing and equipment, too. I used to love to shop here; in fact, it wasn't unusual for me to spend an hour or so a couple days a week when my son was tiny. However, although I've been assured they haven't changed owners, there has definitely been a change of management style if not management. While they used to buy back clothes generously, they are now extremely choosy about what they'll buy. It is no longer good enough for the clothing to just be cute and in very good condition. Because of this, I now have a hard time finding clothes for my son. Their racks, which were once filled to bursting, are half empty. It's no longer an enjoyable and beneficial shopping expedition, and it is certainly not worth my time to wash and bag up six or seven sacks of clothes just to bring five and a half of them back home again! In addition, the old staff was cheerful and friendly (the "main" employee back then, whether a manager or an employee, knew my son by name and always had a big smile for us when we came in); now they've all disappeared, and the new staff is not helpful or friendly--the one I suspect is the owner is not at all pleasant in her manner, in fact. I've stopped going to this particular store except once or twice a year--just to check if there's been another change in management. So far, no such luck. I'd say, if it's convenient, give it a look-see but don't get your hopes up; if it's not, don't bother--there are other used and consignment kids' clothing stores around!

The food is definitely 4 stars. It's terrific American-Chinese food with some more authentic dishes on the menu as well. The only problem is the service.
Most of the time the service is terrific. The staff may not be exceptionally solicitous, but they're efficient and effective. That's when the owners are there. The one or two nights a week that the owners are NOT there, however, are a whole other ball game. The service on those unfortunate nights is so slow, it's agonizing, and they just don't seem to care. They vanish from sight even, so you can't flag them down to try to hurry things along. It's been a few years since I've been there, so I don't know if they've finally solved that problem--but the last we went there, it was Sundays that the owners usually were off. They're definitely there the busier nights, such as Friday and Saturday, so those times should be safe. Just watch out on slower days, especially if you haven't all the time in the world!

I have to be honest--the Olive Garden in Everett is one of my favorite restaurants, and I'll tell you why:
1. Kid friendly! The staff is always friendly to my toddler, and helpful to us as far as accommodating his tiny needs. They have great kids' menus, too.
2. Nice atmosphere (in spite of 1). Dim, but not so dark you can't see your food--just pleasantly low lighting that makes for a calming atmosphere.
3. Good range of prices and foods. Diabetic? Got it covered. Vegetarian? No problem. Got a few days til payday? There's something for you. On a first date? There's sure to be something you'll both like. Anniversary/birthday? Splurge a little!
4. Desserts! Tiramisu. Lemon Cream Cake. Tuxedo Cake. Need I say more?
5. Great place for lunch--the all-you-can eat soup and salad is a bargain, especially if you've worked up an appetite shopping.
And finally--the BEST salad ever (and as much of it as you want, too)!
If you are looking for a place to impress someone with your wad of cash so thick you could stone someone to death with it, this isn't for you. The rest of us may find that it is just the place to go, whether on a family outing, a nice lunch, or a reasonably quiet place for a date.
