While Wasabi Bistro is a great place for after work nibbles or dinner, I like it the very best at lunchtime. Why? Their lunch menu is very reasonable price-wise (relative to the dinner menu, anyway).
Order a bowl of Edamame for starters and one of their combination lunch plates. You'll walk out with a smile on your face.

My wife and I are beginning to make PercheNo our go-to restaurant when it comes to attending any event at or near the Seattle Center. The reasons are many.
First: the staff there are just delightfulโfrom the owners to the wait staff. They are efficient, helpful and friendly to the point of seeming like friends soon after you meet them.
Second: the food selection (Italian) is both varied and nicely prepared. The Portobelo mushroom is a must. The polenta dishes are perfectly prepared. And it will take several visits to PercheNo just to sample the range of delightful menu items and choose a personal favorite.
Third: the restaurant itself is cozy, unassuming and feels like it belongs in its neighborhood...reminding me somewhat of a good NYC neighborhood restaurant.
If you're hungry for Italian fare, simply presented and in a cozy setting check out PercheNo and see what you think.

There are a lot of great places to run near water around the Seattle area but here are my top three:
Greenlake
For great people watching while running around a very pretty lake setting you just can't beat one or two trips around Greenlake...pretty much any time of day. The lake is encircled by a park so the views are generally trees and grass with a glimpse of the Space Needle and Seattle on the horizonโstunning around sunset.
Lake Washington Blvd./Seward Park
Another great running route...much less populated than Greenlake but every bit as pretty. During the summer there's boating activity all over, from cruisers to rowing club workouts. The sidewalk/running path is wide and uncrowded. And views are excellent.
Myrtle Edwards Park.
Starting at Pier 70 and running north toward Magnolia, this is a runners mecca. A lot of the people who trot here come from downtown Seattle, running along the waterfront piers then through the park. Astounding Puget Sound views include Alki Point, Bainbridge Island, Ferryboats, Freighters, Sailboats and incredible sunsets over the Olympics.

Over the years, we've adopted two cats and a dog from the Humane Society shelter, near Factoria.
The staff there is mostly volunteer and incredibly helpful...and patient.
We usually "interview" a lot of animals in the private rooms they have there. This gives you a chance to get at least a brief read on the personality of each animal before you make the big step and decide which one to bring home.
The shelter is clean and seems to attract a lot of people ready to take on a new pet. We've found that it is best to get there just after opening time in order to avoid crowds and long lines.
Like many shelters these days, The Humane Society no longer euthanizes animals which don't find a family within a certain time frame; instead, they circulate them to other shelters in the hopes that a good match will be found.
This makes me happy.
By the way, you can see a lot of the animals they have up for adoption at their web site: www.seattlehumane.org/

Their TV ads suck and have sucked for years. In fact they could probably stake a claim for the most consistently sucky local television advertising. (Though Taco del Mar's latest TV commercials are gaining on them.) Adding the stupid talking cactus was definitely the turd in the Taco Time swimming pool.
Now on to their food. (Please put the floating turd out of your mind.)
Most fast food joints have made concessions to the fact that some of us like to try to eat healthfully. Usually, this amounts to a pile of lettuce with a deep fried chunk of chicken breast accompanied by a packet of high salt, high fat dressing. So much for health.
But you can go to a Taco Time and find a number of low fat options, from salads (which they experiment with a lot...usually coming up with tasty options) to lighter versions of their burritos.
Sneak in an order of Mexi-fries (a mildly spicy twist on the tater-tot) once a month or so and you can visit a TT fairly regularly and walk out satisfied that you ate something that won't clog your arteries before you reach your car.
Here's another amazing Taco Time tale. They give you free ice water...and even ask if you want a slice of lemon in it. No charge for the water. No charge for the cup. No charge for the lemon. Wow.

Dr. Marti Liddell, who is with the Polyclinic, has been my GP for more than 12 years.
During that time I have found her to be both highly competent and compassionate.
She always takes time to catch up with me...not only medically, but personally...and seems genuinely interested in what's going on in my life. This is a far cry from many of the doc's I've seen who seem to be on the managed-care time-is-money treadmill.
She has helped me through numerous medical needs and been an advocate for me in dealing with various specialists when needed.
While I have had both good and bad experiences at the hands of other physicians over the years, I have to rate Dr. Liddell at the top of the list as a person-to-person caregiver.

In this era of super-sized hardware-, grocery-, box-good- and book-stores it is refreshing to visit a bookseller sized for the neighborhood in which it resides.
Island Books is just such a place, small enough to feel cozy and large enough to discover nooks and crannies where you can feel alone in your book browsing.
I have found the staff to be both knowledgeable and very helpful.
Selection is very up-to-date and if they don't have something you're looking for they can get it quickly...and ship it to you at no charge. They even have a semblance of a classic used book section.
My only regret is that they aren't open more evenings than just Thursday.

There's a hidden secret on Mercer Island called the Roanoke Inn.
Once an Inn for ferry riders crossing Lake Washington from Leschi to the island, the Roanoke has been in continuous operation since 1914...and feels like it.
Reminds me of some of the inns and roadhouses I discovered while living in upstate Mass.
Food is typical tavern fare...maybe a notch or two higher on the preparation scale. Not cheap but reasonable, with enough variety to satisfy a range of dietary preferences.
A great place to meet friends after work...especially during the summer, when there's ample outdoor seating on the open front porch, the side patio and the back yard.
It's a must visit for anyone who has missed out on this little gem of a historical road house.

After visiting several Seattle bike shops just to find one that seemed both friendly and knowledgeable I discovered Velo.
This is a great place if you don't want to deal with the kind of bike snobs that seem to work in many of the high end (high priced) shops.
I have found the owner and staff at Velo to be extremely helpful and when I brought them my DeRosa, which I purchased on eBay, they did a thorough tune up and detailing which made it feel like a brand new bike...all at what I thought was a totally reasonable price.
I give this shop two thumbs, and two big toes, up!
