Four Day Weekend, or some other brand of improvisational comedy, is something everybody should experience once. I find it inspiring that these people are so talented that they can make a room full of slack-jawed yokels laugh by simply reacting to what's happening at the moment. It's not something you can do every weekend or anything, but it's a lot of fun, and it's never the same show twice. Also, after you've gone, you get to enjoy spotting the players in regional commercials on TV for things like Whataburger. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

A mere three or four years ago, I loved going to CD Tradeworld. They had a great selection of used CDs, I could always find the rare stuff I was looking for (this was when I still bought CDs instead of just finding all of my music online), they had all kinds of great merchandise in addition to the music, and I could get rid of my old CDs for cash. I guess the owner decided he could make more from DVDs, because the CDs are almost completely absent from the selection.

If I had a lot of money, I might think differently of the Ashton. It's a first-class hotel with every fine appointment, including a gourmet restaurant. It's just very expensive for what you're getting, which is essentially a roof over your head for a night or two. That said, I think I should point out that my fiance and I are planning to stay there the night we get married.

The Arlington Museum of Art is in a beautiful midcentury building in old downtown Arlington. They hold regular exhibitions featuring young Texas artists, and they also host student shows in conjunction with UTA. The facility is pretty small, but they make the most of their resources. It's a really nice space. It's available for rentals, too, so they have all kinds of interesting events in there. They also have a pretty well known haunted house during the month of October.

We're lucky in Fort Worth that we have several unique shops/boutiques wherein one can always find something special or one-of-a-kind. Strings has a really nice selection of a little of this, and a little of that. It's a little on the pricey side, but I think that's to be expected in this type of shop. I would recommend going there to buy a gift for the person who has everything.

OK, I'm local, so Retro Cowboy really isn't for me; I get it. It's in a great location on Sundance Square downtown, and I think its target demographic is middle-aged "Yankees" on their first or only visit to Fort Worth. In other words, it's for tourists. But I still like to go in and look around and see what the Fort Worth stereotypes really look like. The best feature of this place is the real live retro black and white photo booth they have there. Best two bucks you could spend, that.

The Amon Carter is an interesting study in contrasts. It is a sleek, modern building with midcentury-inspired furnishings that houses an impressive collection of Texan and Western art. The traveling exhibition are usually related to Western art or architecture in some way. It's a beautiful museum, and I am happy to spend many an afternoon wandering around there. Admission is still free, as far as I know.

As I've said before, we live in an increasingly corporate consumer culture, so a place like Marvin is refreshing. It's family owned and operated, and I think that the owners have been reasonably successful in their venture, despite some rather difficult competition from the "big guys." It has a wide selection and decent prices, and even a few unique finds that you'd have to special order from anywhere else.

It's widely known that art galleries are little more than stores that sell high-ticket items. But in a place like Fort Worth, where there seems to be a wealth of talented artists, the Carol Henderson Gallery is, well, little more than a store. It seems that instead of displaying new or emerging artists' work, this gallery shows mediocre art that will sell quickly. It's a shame.

Berry Good Buys is connected with a women's shelter organization, so the proceeds go to a good cause. I try to throw some business their way when I can. The problem is that the selection is very small (we're talking practically non-existent) and the cramped quarters are hard to navigate.
