I met some friends at this bar on a night when I really felt more like going to bed. I was glad I went out, though, because Porky's is a great time. The decor is sort of southern-fratboy and you can order "fishbowls" of drinks to share with a group (or I guess finish by yourself if you're adventurous). They frequently have live music, which is always fun. The bar is sandwiched between Duvet and some other club, so the glamed-up people on the sidewalk really look out of place with these less classy bar patrons. Apparently, girls like to dance on the bar here too when it gets really crazy, but my friends and I just hung out to the great cover band and had a lot of fun.

I've always thought the Meatpacking district of NYC was filled with people that were TCFS (too coo for school) and that really turned me off from that whole scene. I'd rather just put on some jeans and drink a beer, and now I've found the perfect spot in that area to do so! Brass Monkey is at the end of Little West 12th street, tucked away amongst the old meat packing companies. It's brick interior has a few tables and a long, spacious bar. Dancing in the back, and the music is always great. If you're not up for a super-posh club, this bar is well worth the trip downtown.

I have a problem with baked goods in that I want to eat them all the time. Sugar Sweet Sunshine is a fabulous bakery on Rivington street. The cute little cakes are dolloped in pastel icing and arranged in cases around the store. I learned from the staff here that you're actually not supposed to refrigerate baked goods! The flavors range from plain old chocolate to banana pudding and red velvet. You definitely can't just eat one, so be sure to take a few to go if you stop by.

A friend was coming to visit me and I was looking for a fun, cheap place we could have brunch at since she's a med school student trying to save up. "Alphabet City" was not an area I had really explored, but The Sun Burnt Cow was a great find. For $15, we had our choice of brunch entrée (she had eggs something, I had a turkey burger) and unlimited beer or mimosas. We were there for several hours and by 3pm, stumbled to 14th street definitely having drunk our money's worth. It has a cute back "outback" seating area with an Australian theme, and equally attractive Australian waiters. For $15, you can't go wrong!

Whole Foods is great - I shop there often. But if you're at the one in the Time Warner Center and don't want to deal with the crowd or long lines, take a short walk down 8th ave. to 55th street to Westerly Market. This natural market is smaller, but offers much of what whole foods does for a lower price. Their deli case in the back sometimes has inventive, fresh and delicious pre-made dinners. I get a lot of my vegetables and soy products here.

Single Room Occupancy is a trip back in time. The bar is located on 53nd, near 9th avenue, but I can't tell you the exact address because I don't think it actually has one. The place used to be a speak easy and in keeping with that clandestine tradition, it uses a lit candle on it's front stoop to symbolize it's open. No sign, nothing else marks the entrance. Once you find it, knock on the door and someone will let you into this cave-like space. It's small (hence the name) but has a great selection of wine. Rumor is that when it was built back in the day, they found skeletons in the basement of the building. There are a few on display in the back near the bathrooms. Definitely not good for groups, but a fun date destination and an over all cool place to check out.

Ava lounge is atop the super-trendy Dream Hotel on 55th and Broadway. The lounge is separated on two floors and in the spring/summer, the roof deck is open, providing great views of Time Square. We had a friend's going away party there at the end of June, and it was perfect. You'll pay around $10 for one of there specialized martini drinks, but regular cocktails are at the high-end of the normal priced scale. If you have a special occasion, guests from out of town or just in the mood for something classier than a pub, definitely check this place out.

When looking for an apt. last year, I had an unfortunate experience with Manhattan Apartments, but I'm not one to hold a grudge, so I decided to give them a try again. They must screen for the most arrogant, rudest brokers around when deciding who to hire. I felt like our guy was just trying to steal as much money as possible from me and didn't really care if I lived in a box in Central Park as long as he got paid. The 15% commission is absurd considering how lacking the work they do is. There is no personal attention or consideration of your needs, just here's an apt., give us money, bye. They're also very pressuring and downright rude at times. I didn't actually believe it when the broker said his fee would be almost $9,000, with a totally straight face, and there was no negotiating about it. Save your money! Stick with craigslist, rent-direct.com, cheaprent.org, or another broker if you must, but definitely not Manhattan Apartments. I actually wish there was a "no-star" option for Judy's book right now, because "poor" is too much for these guys.

If you live in the 5 burroughs and haven't hear of Century 21, then you must have been living in a dark corner alone somewhere. This is the destination for discount designer shopping. I'm a label whore, but unfortunately my salary doesn't just let me walk in to Barney's and buy half the store. So Century 21 is my savior. From smaller fashion houses like Marc Jacobs to the wildest Italian designers, if you put in some time and dedication, you'll probably score an authentic coutour piece at this store for a fraction of what you'd pay on 5th Ave.

I just got back from a vacation and for the most part, I'm not a huge fan of flying. So, when the captain of my Continental Airlines flight said we were delayed from taking off because of a "fuel problem" I started freaking out! However, I was so impressed with how the crew handled the situation. The in-flight movie was started early to calm passengers, or help the time pass, however you look at it, and drinks were served. Finally, the captain himself came into the cabin and explained exactly what the problem was and assured us repeatedly that our plane was in fact safe. Before that, I was thisclose to asking to get off the flight (yes, I'm really that nervous!) but the crew & co. really did a professional job of dealing with the situation.
