I almost didn't believe it when my friend told me about this NYC bar, but it does exist. Beer for twenty-five cents!! Of course there's a catch, though. First it's only on Fridays from 6:30pm - 7:30pm. The bartenders announce the start and end of this magical hour by ringing a large bell above the bar. Then, you have to pay a $5 cover to get into the bar and you have to buy $1 of beer at a time. BUT...for $7 ($5 cover, plus $1 for 4 beers, plus $1 tip) you're getting a lot more for your money than the $7 one beer at a trendier place would cost. And to be honest, I'm a light-weight, so 4 beers in an hour is good for me! The bar is very casual and laid back with mostly a 20-something crowd. It's pretty big, with a separate back room with tables, and many TV's for sports watching. A fun place! They also claim to have the best bloody mary's in Manhattan. Visit the website and decide for yourself. http://www.patobriensnyc.com/

This is the quaintest little store in the quaintest little town in all of New Hampshire. I lived in the state for 4 years, so I'm a fair judge of New England Charm and Zeb's General Store has definitely got it.
The store front looks like something from the early 1900's. Inside, looks like another era. The floors are old wide beam wood planks and the place is filled with local, genuine products. They have handmade soaps, penny candy, unique concoctions of herbs for dips and sauces, cheese and so much more! The upstairs room is filled with trinkets, home decorations, kids books/toys, jewelry and souvenirs. You can try free samples of fudge and many of their other homemade snacks. The service is also quite charming and friendly. Chat up the workers for great local recommendations.
If you've ever wanted to visit an old fashioned general store, this is the place! The town it's located in is also known for skiing, so if you're a fan, think about planning a winter trip here (I'm sure it's gorgeously decorated for the holidays). But, it's also pretty far and in a remote area of NH on the Maine boarder. Luckily, they have a website brimming with products, gift baskets, history and recipes. If you can't make it to NH, try the website. http://www.zebs.com/index.html
You won't be disappointed!

I went to this bar, Pianos, with some friends from out of town last weekend. It's on the lower east side of Manhattan, so I knew it would be crowded, loud, etc. The music was fun. It was crowded and loud, but we found a table. The decorations are fun and the crowd was pretty cute. But it was obnoxious. Why? because of the bouncer outside. My license is 100% authentic (Hi, I'm well above 21. Getting carded is not flattery) and there is NOTHING to generate any kind of suspicion about it. Yet, he stared at it, them me, then it, then me for a solid 2 minutes. I look exactly the same in my picture as I do now. Then he has the nerve to ask me for a credit card as a second form of ID. A credit card is not a form of ID, number one. Number two, he stared at that for so long I actually asked him if I should be worried that he was memorizing my account number. The guy was a jerk, clearly overly concerned with his "power" as a bouncer. Hope you have a better time getting in.

I stayed at the Treasure Island hotel on the Vegas Strip. It has a pirate show in this lagoon in front of the hotel that's pretty spectacular. Canons, mermaids, sword fights, the whole deal. The rooms are nice and not super expensive, and the spa is very well equipped. It's not the fanciest place on the strip, but worth it if you're not a high-roller. I loved the decorations of the Paris hotel, and the staff even addresses you in basic French! The Bellagio is obviously a very posh place. If I go back and have some cash to spend, I'll either stay there or at the Luxor (it's shaped like a Pyramid).
You can get a lot of entertainment for free in Vegas because the hotels always have something going on. The Excelsior has a jousting match, the fountain show at the Bellagio, the art gallery at the Venetian, etc. You'll find lots of fun stuff to do for sure!

I have to review my hair salon here because of an incident that happened to me a few weeks ago. This could've been a 1-star review, but they really redeemed themselves.
I've been going here to many years, like maybe 5. During college, I would wait to get my hair cut/highlighted during breaks so I could get it done by my normal stylist. So, in late September when I went in for a highlight touch-up, I thought it would be routine. My hair had been dyed and being in the sun all summer had lightened it up even more. It was in bad shape, not terrible, but it needed some help. So I told my stylist I wanted to go a shade or two darker to undo some of the sun damage. My hair is blonde. It's been for the majority of my life. For some reason she took "darker" to mean black. My hair was hideous! I left the place crying and I've never been upset about hair before so I felt silly.
When I got home, everyone was like "Wow, what happened to you!" which make me feel worse. I've been going to this lady for years, I don't know how she could've messed up my hair!
I called the salon and got a corrective apt. with another stylist. She found a gentle way to remove the darker dye w/out harsh chemicals. My hair is not the exact colour I wanted it to be, but it's not black anymore! Like a dirty blonde maybe. Regardless, I was happy to have this fixed, free of charge by the salon. And I think I found a new colourist. So, a bad situation, turned out alright and was handled very well by the salon.

I think, but am not 100% certain, that she has Red Door spas in major cities across the country. I think a half-day package is only about $200 dollars, which for the quality of treatment you are getting, is very good. We have two in New York and they are very reputable for being fabulous and relaxing. Your best bet is probably to look for one in the Seattle area. She'll love it, I'm sure.

Last night, during the Met's game (go New York!), some friends and I opened a bottle of $4 wine for Trader Joe's. It was fabulous! For the price, you might be kind of worried about the quality. I don't know how TJ's does it, but they provide you with a decent bottle of wine at an amazing price. If you like wine, or want to get to try some new varieties, this is a great place to learn. If you don't like what you're trying, you're only out $4. They do carry some higher-end bottles, but I don't think I saw anything in the store for more than $30. For a party, this is a wonderful and affordable place to stock up. If I lived closer to the store, I'd probably spend all my money here. Not that I'm a lush, I just like trying new things!
The only downside I can think of is that the store is kind of small, but hey real estate in Manhattan is expensive.

In theory, this bar sounds very cool. The idea is that you sit at tables with mini TV's and telephones attached. There are cameras all over the place and you can flip through the channels to check out who's int he bar. If you see someone you like, you can give them a call! Sounds fun, right? Well, not when none of the phones or cameras work! I was there last week with friends and was disappointed. How can this scheme to flirt via TV work when the equipment is broken! Very disappointing.

Crane's is a fabulous chain of stationers that provides beautiful designs. I recently purchased monogrammed letterhead for a friend who was moving away. I have the prettiest blue-on-blue thank you notes from there that I'm sure got me noticed when doing job interviewing way back when. If you have an occasion, they have a card for it. Baby announcements, birthday parties, resume paper or just something fun to send to a friend far away. They're all elegant and of very good quality. Of course you can even design your own on their computerized system if what's available doesn't suit your need. They usually carry all paper accessories too, like pens, stamps, engravers. It's a great way to create your own signature.

Whenever I go visit my parents, I get really excited when my mom goes out for bagels at Time for a Bagel. It's a cute, family run stop in the suburbs with great bagel-making skills! The selection is plentiful and they have a variety of cream cheeses, spreads or a deli if you want a sandwich on a bagel. They're always have the right softness and the outside is never too hard or burned. My favorite is sesame because the seeds actually smell and taste toasted. This little shop know what they're doing when it come to bagels.
