We went here when my oldest was 4 and our now 3 year old was 1 and it was definitely for 3 year olds and up, but fun. They had an exhibit where they could make and fly paper planes, you could take an all around photo of your head (I can't remember what happened to it then) and lots of other fun things. It is an interesting museum to try with 3 and up.

The aviation museum is kind of small, but it's a nice place to go when it's rainy or hot. They have a membership, and I've seen moms there with a lunch for their kids who just hang out. They have a small exhibit of airplane history (I didn't get to see much of this so I'm not really sure what they focus on), an airplane you can walk into, and a little play area with ride on toys and coloring. The gift shop is nice and extensive too. They have camp and holiday events as well.

Coyote Point is a really nice place to visit when you want to see animals (they have a small "zoo"), want to be inside, or otherwise need to entertain your kids. It is really convenient to 101 and downtown San Mateo. They have summer, spring, and winter camps for kids, and "Toddler Tuesday" where there is some craft project for toddlers.
Unfortunately, there is talk of closing this museum down. I wouldn't be surprised if the local yacht club and golf course wants to take over the gorgeous land it rests on. This would be a big disservice to the kids (and adults) of San Mateo and surrounding communities.

This library has a pretty good selection and a nice new building. They are part of the Peninsula Library System which is a shared automation system with San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos, College of San Mateo, Burlingame, Daly City, Millbrae and South San Francisco. So you can order books from other libraries in the system and get them delivered to your local branch for 75 cents. This is a nice branch to visit which is relatively close to the San Carlos train station.

It's interesting, but not very big and won't take too long to visit. I'd go if in Burlingame but not travel too far to go.

Whenever I met my friend for lunch she would choose the Tied House because it was easy for kids to eat and/or a group. I've been there many times and each time I tried a different food and they were all bad. They do have a pretty good bread, however, that is a twisted loaf of white and brown bread. But that's it. Not worth the trouble.

We went here one day after the Tech Museum when we couldn't find anywhere else (San Jose is dead on the weekends!) and liked the San Francisco location. We got seated with our 2 kids, but that was it. No one ever came back, even though there were people being served at other tables. We ended up leaving, and found a Johnny Rocket's around the corner that was just fine.

So many people are obsessed with IKEA, and a friend of mine is a big proponent, so she convinced me to meet her there today. I have been in the past with my kids and they have been seriously disappointed when the "Smaland" (kiddie play area) was "full". Last time we got there when someone was picking up a kid and we still couldn't get in for 2 1/2 hours which made my son upset and me pissed off. But I said I would try again today. We were lucky enough to get 2 kids into the "Smaland" for the whole 90 minutes and go shopping. I admit it is very kid friendly, with play areas all around the store, and a cafeteria with another play area. However, even though I had a better experience today I am still not a member of the IKEA cult.
I looked at their couches and some of them looked nice, but were expensive. The more reasonably priced ones were too small and/or really cheap looking. I also looked at their kitchen tables and every one of them looked really cheap.
Their appliances and furniture otherwise look nice, but I couldn't afford them, so I may end up getting some in the future but not anytime soon. I also had an issue getting out without going through the maze of a store, and once I did get out, getting back to my car without walking around the humongous parking lot or going through the cash registers was impossible.
Before today's trip I would have given it 1 star. After today's trip to "Smaland" for the kids, I'm moving it up to 2 stars.

Filoli is always nice to visit. It's got gorgeous gardens to wander, tadpoles in their water feature, and a mansion to tour. They also do special events like decorating for Christmas. Recently they put in a restaurant that I haven't visited yet. Their gift shop has some nice garden themed things that you can't find other places. They also have a garden center to get plants. A really nice place for the whole family. The only problem is that the whole gardens are not wheelchair/stroller friendly -- there are some steps that you have to navigate and the path can be narrow.

This is a New Orleans themed restaurant. Their jambalaya is good and they have good mixed drinks and carry New Orleans beers like Turbo Dog. They have a nice environment including a lot of tributes to various people from New Orleans. The restaurant doesn't have any air conditioning so don't go on a hot day. The service is pretty good an they are very accomodating for large groups. It's better to go in the summer when Stanford is out of session (so you can get a table) but there is "less scenery" then.
