I had high hopes for Zum Zum. It was billed (by fellow brown people no less) as one of the better indian restaurants around. The line snaked out the door so I figured it must be good. But I was sorely disappointed. I had hoped that this would turn out to be the classic hole-in-the-wall with amazing food type of place (something like Shalimar in SF). But the items I ordered (lamb spinach and lamb with peas) were very greasy even on an indian restaurant scale and lacking flavor. The vegeterian dishes, ironically, looked much more appetizing. Perhaps if you stay away from the lamb, you'll do better. But the chicken looked layered in equal amounts of oil. It's sort of like soup nazi service withouth the great soup. I feel cheated and nauseous.

I had a positive impression of Lola right away. The interior design strikes a rare balance of being stylish, fresh and hip while also feeling down-to-earth and relaxed. Our grou of 5 was seated in a comfortable booth close to the entrance. The service was excellent, especially with regards to suggesting wines by the glass. We ate family style so I had a chance to sample quite a few things. I thought the Greek Salad was great though not your traditional leafy salad. There was a hunk of feta the size of a razor phone in the middle of the plate of olives, cucumbers, onions and tomatoes. very tasty. The dolmades were good but not a personal favorite (they taste the same everywhere to me and it's always too greasy). I was not a huge fan of the salmon kebab, but it was as expected -- if you like your salmon grilled and very rich (as it tends to be in Seattle) then you'll like this. The highlight for me was the goat tagine. The meat was very succulent and the flavors quite subtle. The portion was medium-large, but by no means "big" as advertised by our waitress (not by any self-respecting male standards anyway). The vegeterians in the group seemed very satisfied and the dishes tasted ok to me but I'm hard pressed to write a positive review of a vegetable skewer (so allow me to recuse myself). One of the uber-healthy amongst us did comment that it was "rich" and the vegetable skewers had been dripped with olive oil. So it's not quite California cuisine if you're a health nut. But it is tasty and flavorful, in a great setting. Oh almost forgot! Dessert - against my wishes, the group opted to share 2, not 3 desserts. Both were good, though the Chocolate Tart was among the best I've had. (And I've had a lot, since it's the town bicycle of desserts). What made it special was the orange chocolate flakes in the ice cream. The doughnuts were good if...well, if you're into that sort of think. Light tasting, for a donut. But artery cloggin nonetheless.

This is the best Mexican restaurant I could find within a 1 mile radius. The food is pretty good, though not spectacular. The location is down a set of steps from 1st Ave, right next to the freeway. The decor is a gaudy but festive combination of primary colors set in a cavernous high-ceilinged room that seems somewhat un-Mexican. The chicken enchilada was good and the beef taco was okay (hard shell with minced meat). They have Dos Equis on tap.

We had a really fun summer evening at the beach at Golden Gardens. We had brought our own metal grating and negotiated to share a friendly group's fire pit. It was fun just hanging out to the sound of the drum circle and people watching while taking in the gorgeous late summer sunset. The atmosphere was a tad hippie, but that was fun. There was a cute little hippie kid running around with dreads, and the fire jugglers and hoopers and whatnot. Perhaps they were practicing for Burning Man. It gave it a fun, surreal party vibe. But don't plan on finding a fire pit if you arrive at 7pm like we did unless you get lucky and find someone willing to share. Dogs are plentiful and love this place, though they may not be officially allowed. Beer on the beach is the norm as well, though again, unsure if it's allowed (pretty sure it's not). In general, I would say this is a nicer beach to hang out in than Alki, because of the physical surroundings and natural beauty (Alki is more urban with bars right across the road).

I paid $24 with tax for a "silver" car wash. Perhaps it's because I'm stupid, or perhaps it's because I'm new in town. But that's expensive by any standards. I suspect I pulled a rookie move and didn't use a coupon or something (I blindly ordered silver b/c someone had recommended it).
The staff are pretty unhelpful and unfriendly overall. That said, it's a decent car wash and I can't find any others in Seattle, so what am I to do. The $24 car wash was good, I suppose, except they forgot altogether to clean one of my wheels. Now my car looks really weird, because everything gleams except one grimy wheel which sticks out like crazy.
Note: this review is for the Seattle location near Denny Way.

It was a clear summer night, with full moon shining brightly. I walked unsuspectingly into Crocodile Cafe and paid the $10 cover charge for the "Emo" rock bands Criteria and Appleseed Cast. As I entered the dimly lit show area, I noticed something sinister out of the corner of my eye... AAARGH!! SNAKES ON A CEILING!!
After a few curses worthy of Samuel L., I realized they were quite dead. Once I got past the dead-reptiles-strung-from-the-rafters motif, the rest the evening was great. This was a Monday night, yet the show area was 80% full. Only 1/3 of the crowd was in the "over 21" area - not sure whether that speaks more to the band or the venue. Right away I liked the place because it felt intimate, I could feel the sound from the speakers and because Criteria put on a great set. The stage lighting is cool. Your basic high school lights with red and green and yellow filters. It reminded me of a Pearl Jam video, the one where Eddie Vedder crowd surfs. Anyway, great place to catch a live band, but I suspect weekends it is mobbed and/or sold out. There is also a cafe area where you can just chill (and don't have to pay cover).

The good thing about this place is that it's open late (10pm on weeknights) and service and seating are quick. The atmosphere is more on the traditional side, but a little dull, reflective of the downtown, somewhat touristy location. The sushi bar is nice though. I like this place for it's Japanese curry - I prefer the chicken the the sliced ribeye one. I also tasted the salmon teriyaki don which was good. The sushi is unspectacular at best and poisonous at worst. My friend got sick, most likely from one of the unagi rolls (maybe it had some questionable raw fish also?). The california roll was the highlight, being one of the better ones I've had (they use real crab and portions are good). Spicy tuna was abysmal. The menu is pretty extensive though, and I'd recommend you stick to the everyday Japanese cooking and not the sushi. They have udon, yakitori, chicken kara-age, ramen etc. that Im looking forward to trying.

Bad coffee, rude service and they charge you $0.25 to use a credit card. Don't go here if you can help it.
